With a Little Help from My Friends

Here’s a live cover of the Joe Cocker version - Tom Keifer covering With a Little Help from My Friends Live on "The Way Life Goes" 2014 Tour at Ziggy's By The Sea in Wilmington NC September 20th 2014 .

It’s a great cover, but probably only notable because Kiefer’s the singer/guitarist for the band Cinderella.

But it’s actually astonishing to note that this song still kicks butt in a live setting 45 years after Joe Cocker set the world on fire with it. Lennon/McCartney - They sure were a great songwriting team, weren’t they?

    Orquestro Ouro Preto
merges the Joe Cocker version with the original Beatles arrangement in what may be the best orchestra performance I’ve heard of this tune.

International jazz a cappella group Accent bills itself as “Six Guys, Five Different Countries. One Sound”. Hell, I still marvel at the technology that allows this sort of “virtual” group to happen.

Now, I really enjoy covers that put a different spin on a Beatles song, so I really like this “sponsored” cover by “Dodie”. She accompanies herself on ukulele (and doubletracks some of the background vocals).

    I love its intimate vibe.

So . . . here’s another a virtual a cappella group, this time 11 singers from 5 countries. It seems to be a one-off by people that just “do” this sort of thing for fun. I know I’ve seen the lead singer, Sonny, in another of these as a guest of the guy that usually does all the voices for barbershop covers. Sonny also does his own four part barbershop arrangements of songs.

Re: Beatles COVER Song of the Day

With a Little Help from My Friends

I'm floored by just how many covers of WaLHFMF I've found.

Shoshana Bean feat. Grace Potter does a great uptempo big band version, without resorting to relying on Joe Cocker’s cover.

Kyla Jade sang the tune on this year’s live finale of The Voice. She certainly does the song justice, although she’s no Joe Cocker. But this gets so wonderfully more manic the longer the song goes on, that it’s a joyful experience. She placed third overall in the competition.

These days there seems to be a lot of live recreations of Beatles songs, and this one’s no exception. Get a load of Elephant Revival’s live cover from 2018.

This cover of the Cocker version by the Spencer Lee Band also kicks some serious butt. I don’t know where they’re from, but they’re currently touring from Quebec to Delaware to the South to California.

    Revolution

Originally released 26 august, 1968, as the B-side of the Hey Jude single. And it’s really a cover of the earlier slower version which ended up with the title Revolution No. 1, and found a home on The Beatles (The White Album) later in 1968.

1968 Top of the Pops, Volume 2 – the first cover of Revolution came from Top of the Pops, a budget series of somewhat sound-alike versions of popular songs by uncredited session musicians. Considering that it was released the same year as the original, it’s actually a pretty credible cover with its own sound. I’ll take issue with the sloppy keyboard solo though. There’s a few lyric misinterpretations as well, but the dirty electric guitar throughout makes up for it all. Anyway, this track was re-released in 1973 as a tribute compilation credited to King’s Road titled “The Beatles 1962-1970” (which also included covers of some solo Beatles tracks: Maybe I’m Amazed, My Sweet Lord, Mother, Junk, and Isn’t It a Pity).

    Santo & Johnny
were the first to release an instrumental cover, and weird it is too. It features Vibraphone, and presumably some keyboard instrument attempting to sound like trombones (I’m kind of stumped on this).

Re: Beatles COVER Song of the Day

The Head Shop was the first “real” band to release a vocal cover, and it’s also pretty weird. The monstrous fuzz tone on the guitar is pretty demented, and the undermixed Farfisa organ just screams 1969. They were an American Psychedelic-garage punk band from New York that released one album in 1969.

Also in 1969 The Brothers Four released the most whitebread version you could imagine on their album Let's Get Together, complete with Dixieband instrumental in the middle, although the rest is pretty much vanilla easy listening. It’s almost surprising that a folk vocal group founded in 1957 would still be kickin’ in 1969 still using a very grandpa genre of music. Well, they DID have a #2 Pop hit in 1960 with the song Greenfields, and a Top 20 debut album. Even more surprising is that this group is still active 60 years later, with bookings scheduled well into 2019.

    Thomson Twins
covered in their own synthpunkpop way, and performed their cover at 1985 Live Aid with Madonna in tow. This is evidently not their best work, but they were pretty popular at the time.

    Mike and the Mechanics
, from the 1989 film Rude Rude Awakening. An official video was made.

Is it any good? It's passable.

But it's Mike and the Mechanics, right smack in the middle of their popularity (1985-1995).

The Stone Temple Pilots covered it live in 2001. This is the first cover where the keyboard player actually plays the solo correctly.

Then again . . . simply making something different doesn't necessarily make it better, or even good.

From the 2002 soundtrack of I Am Sam, Grandaddy's electro-pop version is perhaps my least favorite cover of the song.
