Icon5 Howe Plays Rabin vs. Rabin Plays Howe

Steve Howe accompanied by some session musicians is playing in home town tomorrow night. The setlist is comprised exclusively of YesWest material.

Five minutes away, Trevor Rabin accompanied by some session musicians will be playing a setlist comprised exclusively of 1971-1980 material.

Both shows are taking place within walking distance of your home, both start at precisely the same time and tickets for both cost the same.

    Which would you attend?

Interesting thread DG. I'd go to Rabin plays Howe simply because I like some of his rearrangements of pieces like Long Distance Runaround and South Side of the Sky. In the past I typically haven't been too fond of TR's adaptions of Howe's parts but he has been showing me something as of late. We haven't really gotten a large sampling of Howe playing Rabin but what I've heard sounds pretty flaccid to me, Owner, Rhythm of Love. He did play some sweet pedal steel on Hearts during The Ladder Tour but that's it.

Why can't they both be themselves? And play whatever the heck they want. Then I'll go see them both.

    I would agree with that!

But if I were to try to answer the question: I would go to see whoever is playing the 70s material. Not because of who is playing it, but because I like that music more.

To answer the question, I'd go to see Trevor because he's my man. But in actuality I'd send someone else to Steve's show to film it for me because I'd want to see both shows. I think they could each be very interesting experiences.

I'd go and see Steve if I could, regardless of the setlist.

Edit - despite your attempt to make all things absolutely equal, I've thought of another factor. I've never seen Rabin solo, so that might sway me as I've seen Howe a lot.

If you're asking me whether Trevor plays Steve's stuff better than Steve plays Trevor's I'd say I'm not wild about either.

Trevor could play closer to Steve's parts but doesn't, and Steve's style is somewhat incompatible with Trevors (although I'd love to hear Steve thoroughly rearrange the Yeswest material).

    It's swings and, er.....roundabouts.

That has to be the best solution!

The Chinese restaurant at the end of your street is having Pizza night, while the Pizza joint at the other end of the street is having Peking Roasted Duck night. Both start at exactly the same time and cost the same? Where would you go eat?

*answer: I'd stay home, cook myself a decent meal and visit both restaurants at a day they would be serving their own specialities.

Sometimes in music, the songs can transcend the band members themselves - I think Yes is such a band.
