    Question Posticon Ideal encore show-closer?

If this has been brought up before, I apologize. A few of us were talking on the Aug. 8 live thread, and an idea occurred to me to see what people thought, if the band only had a single-song encore for the show you were seeing, what song would you want to hear?

I went to Forgotten Yesterdays and looked through all of the set closers (played more than once) from the TYA tour up to this tour (I left out the uniquely Rabin-era closers, just for the sake of argument, but there were some good ones, e.g., Gimme Some Lovin' and Purple Haze). There were 10 commonly played over the years. I left an 11th choice in case you think something they haven't closed with would be better. Just say what you would prefer in your reply. (Yes, I already know that some witty folks will nominate songs like "Gates of Delirium"...)

(Trivial fact of the day - according to Forgotten Yesterdays, apparently on March 4, 1974, Yes signed a pact to continue as a band into the 21st Century. Mission accomplished!

    Re: Ideal encore show-closer?

P.S. "It's Love" is a Young Rascals song that they used to close shows with on early tours (one performance is on the "The Word Is Live" boxset). "I'm Down", of course, is a Beatles song they closed with in the mid-70s (one performance at JFK Stadium in Philly is on the YesYears boxset).

    OK - enjoy!

Awaken was great and fun with the confetti cannons.

Any song would be good if enveloprs were passed out to the crowd containing $1,000,000 each. You would never see such joy and smilies from the attendees. :-)

    Owner of a Lonely Heart
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. He kept telling me, ‘No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that’s something you want to do.’ And I have to keep making music. It’s just what I do. I’m a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood (Quote edited to fit under character limit for sig files)

Speaking of bookends, I'd like to see the band open with Life Seeker, and close out the show with Wurm. That would be awesome!

Trooper. You know the encores will be at least ten minutes and it's got that big high-energy finish. The 9012Live version isn't my favorite, but I do wish the classic lineup had ended with that switching to double time & speeding up ending.

If my memory serves me correctly the classic lineup did so on Keys to Ascension. 9012live version of ST is my favourite version by the way.

Sometimes in music, the songs can transcend the band members themselves - I think Yes is such a band.

Interesting opinions so far, but there always are here.

Yes, bands seem to go either for a high-energy song that leaves you leaving the venue on a high or for a slower/quieter one to give you a pillowy-soft landing to your evening's entertainment.

There were a couple of suggestions above which confused me, so I want to clarify what I was looking originally in this poll. First, I meant ideal single-song encore for the current YesOfficial, not ARW or any future permutations. (Again, the fact that we only got a single-song encore at the Tower Theater show is what inspired me to start this thread - so, if you were in an equivalent situation, what single song would you want to hear before leaving the venue for the night is what I was getting at.)

The "So Long Farewell" suggestion reminded me that Genesis during the 'Trick of the Tail' tour used to walk off stage at the end to Ethel Merman's "There's No Business Like Show Business" - so, the suggestion is not out of the realm of possibility...

U2 does 40 where the members generally leave one by one with Larry Mullen Jr being the last one on stage. You don't always need a rocking song to end a show powerfully.

Once here in the Netherlands, about 30 years ago or so they ended a show with this song. The audience kept on singing the chorus after the band had left the stage, kept singing it while leaving the stadium in Rotterdam, kept singing it when they walked the streets of Rotterdam to bus and train stations and even on the train stations about an hour after the concert had ended groups of fans were still singing /chanting those lyrics. It was quite impressive.

Oh, I'm a major league U2 fan - I consider '40' to be one of the very best closing songs for a concert in the history of rock concerts. Well said.

Peter Gabriel has done a similar thing with Biko as the last song, with the audience continuing to sing as he leaves the stage.

I never realized it before you mentioned Biko, but both those songs have similar choruses.
