Axis t.v. is going to replay ELP's High Voltage preformance tonight or tomorrow. Made me sad seeing the promtional clip, and then there was one. Sorry to butt in, Eddie, but if folks can catch this , they should. It's promoted as their 40th reunion or something like that. Don't quite remember as all I could really see/ pay attention to was Keith and Greg. :-(

I was wondering what Rick meant by this comment on Twitter:
It's criminal that plans we had were scuppered by third parties
Plans with Keith? Plans for the benefit? I'm assuming the former. It would have been really cool to hear them collaborate.
In small groups to mighty empires we assemble our own company...

I don't know. But before he played, Rick did mention that he and Keith had planned to collaborate and had been exchanging music, but it didn't work out because of Management. So that might be what he meant. I think he also said that he still had that music (but I don't absolutely guarantee that I remembered that part correctly!)

Wait, Rick Wakeman is on Twitter? How have he and Geoff Downes not gotten into a flame war on there yet?
"A lot of the heavier conversations I was having with Chris toward the end were about his desire for this thing to go forward. He kept reiterating that to me. He kept telling me, ‘No matter what happens, Yes needs to continue moving forward and make great music. So promise me that that’s something you want to do.’ And I have to keep making music. It’s just what I do. I’m a fan of the band and I want to see it thrive and that means new music." -Billy Sherwood (Quote edited to fit under character limit for sig files)

Why would a virtuoso like Rick Wakeman even think about a...er...musician like Geoff Downes?

Geoff Downes is a legend in his own right. He started his career with a Buggles album that helped define the next decade plus of music with some of the innovations he and Trevor Horn brought to music that were so widely copied, and which included the single chosen to be the first song ever played on MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star". In addition, he has been the keyboardist on every Asia album, a band that launched it's career with the #1 selling album in the United States, and has produced some of the best music I've ever heard.

Finally, of course, Geoff has been on three Yes albums, including the now very well regarded album, Drama (1980), where he was Rick Wakeman's direct replacement, in a move that made headlines in Rick's home country. He also replaced Rick's son Oliver on Fly From Here (2011) and continued with Yes through Heaven and Earth (2014), and remains a key member to this day.

That's not even going into a lot of Geoff's less well-known stuff.

So, one would think Rick Wakeman would know who Geoff is, for starters, just based on general knowledge of and interaction with the music world, and more specifically the British progressive rock scene (I'm sure they've been at a lot of the same awards shows and whatnot over the years- including most recently the Hall of Fame). However, beyond that, the majority of ARW and now Yes Featuring ARW press releases, and even a lot of Wakeman interviews, give the impression that the members and management of YESFARW spend a lot of time thinking about Yes Official. I'm sure they all know exactly who's in the band.

Yes, virtuoso. The video you posted to open this thread demonstrates it nicely. Of all the musicians currently operating in these bands called Yes today, Wakeman's skills are the ones the least ravaged by age and time. His weight and wives are irrelevant.

I was thinking, 'kinda cool, he hates the guy but recognizes his talent still".

But now I get it: you want people to compliment him so you can then do your usual tiresome anti-Wakeman mockery in response.

Right, I should have let the comment you made about Geoff just sit, right?

I seem to recall some video within the last 3 years from an awards show with many prog keyboard players at the same table. I am almost positive I saw Wakeman and Downes at the same table and possibly Emerson too.

Tonight's a jam-packed night for TV so I don't know if I can catch any of it. Looks like it might fit in between the two shows I want to watch.

Tell you what - - when every third post I make is a snarky put down or worse of Geoff Downes you'll have some equivalence.

But it won't be, because I'm actually an admirer of his work, he's a very gifted musician, as is Rick Wakeman, but they're gifted in different ways, and I just happen to think Rick's gifts are more aligned with Yes music than are Geoff's. YMMV.
