The power went out around 10:30pm, using my phone to check a few things. See you all later.

We got out of this very lucky, at least as far as I can tell so far. We lost power for about 25 minutes last night. There are no trees down in the yard and there doesn't seem to be any damage to the house. My heart goes out to those having to deal with the devastation left behind by the storm.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

Other than the trauma of driving home after work yesterday, nothing else happened. It rained very, very hard all night and the winds were about 60mph here, but I never lost power and never lost the cable. My apartment must be very insulated because I couldn't even hear the storm. If I didn't look out the balcony door, I'd have never know anything was happening outside. Amazing...

My thoughts and prayers go out to those who weren't so lucky.
All those homes burning in Queens, is just heartbreaking.

Prayers for all the animals too. They are completley helpless.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

Here I had just a lot of wind overnight, not even all that much rain compared to last year. My power is still out, but I was able to borrow a generator yesterday, so I'm going to use it sparingly because there's no knowing how long it will take out here in the sticks.

The news from the coast is just terrible, my heart really goes out to them.

    Later.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

YESfriends, if you know of others in that region, please check in with them and make sure they are good to go. Cell phones should be working.

Your Air Force planes are down here at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, they are leaving as soon as the winds are beyond the edges of a safe landing for their home bases.

Utility trucks are on their way to your area to restore electric. Utility trucks from other states. They do this as a FEMA coordinated effort in the event of disasters. Electricity should be back on within 24-48 hours if you were hit particularly hard.

If you are able to, use your car to recharge your cell phone if you are out of power.

Flooding is mostly in coastal towns. Water typically recedes after low tide and typically within 3 days. If it is major, it will be more like a week but you should be powered back ON by then.

Stores are normally back in full swing within 12 hours. They have backup generators for just such events.

Be safe and smart. I know it's tempting to go look at what the storm did but give your local utility companies a chance to clear tree limbs and other debris, get the power back on to those who are still in a blackout.

Have faith, we have much more resources after Hurricane Katrina.

    Re: Hurricane Sandy

Got a message from PPL saying power should be restored here around 6:00pm. I'll not hold my breath.

This isn't over yet, though. Western PA and surrounding areas are getting it now. The wind isn't as bad as when it was on the coast, but the gusts can cause some damage. And snow! Freaking snow in the mountains.

I've still got some rain and wind, but the worst is past. We will get the edges of this maybe into Friday.

We got pounded by rain and relatively high winds here in the Cleveland area. My work was without power today. But there was remarkably little damage around me all considered.
    so the story goes

My power is back on. I'm looking forward to a hot shower.

When I went down to check for mail there was a medium sized tree that broke about 4 feet above the ground. It's on the other side of the road and fell away from the road. The thing is that it missed my phone line and the pole it's on by about a foot. (Holds thumb and finger about an inch apart) "Missed it by that much."

Our house has a natural gas water heater and fireplace so we can still take hot showers and stay fairly warm in the winter as long as the gas supply works. (The fireplace can use batteries to spark the ignition if the power is out.)

I went to work today. It was as if nothing happened.

It's not even raining anymore, but it's very cold.

A natural gas/propane-fueled whole-house generator is the way to go. There are enough power outages here I wish I could afford one

My brother has one now, so it was his portable generator I borrowed.

spoke to diane [swib] up in malden last night-no power still as of 10 p.m. for her! she said yvette is ok and said marge is ok, too-glad to see kevin on here as well. havent heard from harry, but i'll try after my dentist appt this morning.
we got ice pelletts all night! [glad i stocked up on birdseed-we've got one lone red male cardinal sticking around along with a carolina wren. bet he's glad he aint in carolina NOW]
all i could think of yesterday was jon anderson "sometimes i forget how mighty this Earth"..
well, we aint forgetting NOW!! [wink wink]
in the back bay we had four foot whitecaps [sort of normal for oct.nov] and about 10 huge iron ore ships are riding out the wind/snow in our shipping channel. they were all lit up last night in the snow.

i guess we needed a distraction from politics, so sandy showed up!
fingers crossed that people pull together [they ARE] and get cleaned up quickly.
    sorry bout halloween tho!

I haven't been on the internet for the last 2 days so I haven't checked in.
I have been seeing all the news coverage about Sandy though and I couldn't help but think of the Yesfans over there who may be in the storm's path.
I'm sorry I haven't said so earlier but I hope and pray that all Yesfans are safe and I hope it's all over very soon!
