I classify the ALIEN series more as sci-fi even tho there's monsters in it.
My fave horror type movie(s) are the PHANTASM quadrogy- especially IV (OBLIVION). Not only scary, gory and thoroughly creepy but with a nightmarish WTF quality.

The Exorcist (so scary I won't own it, because it was based on a true story)

The Exorcist and The Shining are still hard to beat.
For old-time atmospheric ghost story, my fave is The Uninvited. The Haunting is great for creating fear without showing much. Flat out horror: The Shining and Exorcist. Sci-fi horror: Alien and 28 Days Later (roomie wanted me to say C.H.U.D, I politely declined).
No sense in being pessimistic. It wouldn't work anyway.
Mine are Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness followed by the Nightmare on Elm Street Movies.
Horror / Comedy Fusion is the best.
If it's horror/comedy, it has to be 'The Ghost and Mr. Chicken', with Don Knotts.
Pet Sematary is a good one too.
Yeah I found that one pretty scary...
