Non-Yes Albums Most Similar to 90125

Anyone have any thoughts? What non-Yes albums would you recommend to someone who loves 90125?

I'd agree with the eponymous Esquire debut. Rabin's Can't Look Away solo album is quite close. Also perhaps Eddie Jobson's The Green Album (as Zinc).

XTC 's Apple Venus vol 2 (Wasp Star) has got a song called Playground which sounds as if it were a Big Generator track. Seriously.

I hadn't heard this album before.

Just finished listening to the 90 second song samples on iTunes. Gotta say . . . it has a lot of Rabinesque stuff on it.

Yes. Yes, it DOES sound similar to 90125. And Conspiracy as well. And Open Your Eyes, too.

May be it's worth to listen to more or less prog albums from that years.
    As example -

    Rush "Power Windows"

    Genesis "Invisible Touch"

I've never been entirely sure of the analogy...while they are both indicative of Trevor's style of composition/arrangement/playing, I'd say CLA is even more pop-oriented in some ways, but also very stylistically varied. Ezrin's production contributions are less domineering than Horn's (but still rather 80s-sounding, of course). But if one likes what Trevor did on 90125 then CLA is a good companion to it (and BigGen), certainly.

There were actually Jethro Tull albums that came out just after 90125 that definitely sounded like 90125. The production was decidedly slick, tight and modern, but way too pop with some new-proggish leanings....hows that for vague?

    Yes! Rabin demos - 90124.

Manfred Mann's Earthband "Criminal Tango" - it's AOR album with prog elements, very positive.

Jethro Tull's Broadsword And The Beast from '82 is a good one. Under Wraps from '84 not so much.

I'd go along with Genesis Invisible Touch, mind you that is even worse than 90125..

Esquire is very close to what you want. Very underrated... smart pop done well.

I always thought 90125 and Rush's Power Windows were cut from similar cloth. But really, to me, 90125 was one of a series of interrelated and exemplary Trevor Horn projects that also included (Who's Afraid of...) The Art of Noise, Welcome to the Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, A Secret Wish by Propaganda and Grace Jones' Slave to the Rhythm EP. All very highly recommended.

Yes I would agree that its appeal has a lot to do with that signature sound Horn was creating in that era. I wouldn't recommend 90124 to anyone who is not specifically a fan of Trevor's because it's in some ways markedly different from the end result.

You may be confusing Trevor Horn with Trevor Rabin there.

    Or not.

I think it may have been "Under Wraps" but it was this poppish, synthetic JT. There was one song that was OK.

By the way, I love 90125. Just because it was from the 80's does not necessarily mean it sounded like bubblegum pop.
