Actually I think the 70's Yes and the 70's ELP are quite similar and ELP only had 3 people. Totally different vocalists but the music had the same style. Concept albums, Eddie Offord and use of an orchestra etc. Also they both had bad albums in 1978.

I like "Tarkus" and "From the Beginning" as suggestions. The fact that ELP and Yes are different in some ways, but are the same genre, is what would make the covers interesting. I wouldn't take the route of Squire singing lead on them- I'd give it to Jon Anderson (Or Davison, or whoever is playing the Anderson role this week ) percisely because the "Yes lead singer" voice is what would make the covers distinctive from the originals.

If you just try to find the guy in the band who can sing them the most like Greg Lake, then what's the point? I've always felt like the way to go with covers is make them sound like your band's style. Sort of a "What if Yes had originally come up with the idea of and then recorded 'From the Beginning' before ELP did?" type of thing. If you're just going to mimic them and not adapt them to your style, I guess it's a nice tribute, but there's no reason for people to really buy it and listen to it over the original occasionally. You want to make it something different- turn it into a Yes song.

What an excellent question!

It would have to be Tarkus I think, with Rick Wakeman on keyboards, Bill on Drums and Chris on bass (duh!). Also with Jon on vocals and Steve on guitar. A little obvious, I know but I mean, Emo and Rick were my two main influences on piano/keyboards and to hear Ricks take on it would be awesome. I’d love to hear what he would do with Emo Piano Concerto as well.


As to what Yes song ELP could/would/should do…

Heart of the Sunrise would be one, as it’s very ELP-ish in structure. Parallels would be awesome and surely, Awaken. I can hear Greg at his peak singing that spine-tingling end refrain… awesome.
