Well, nobody knows the religion (or not) of the perpetrator yet so judgement is best reserved.

But, having said that, I have a feeling, and it is not a good one, that eventually there'll be a bit of a ganging up on the atheists by the less tolerant religions. It's sad, really, because all atheism is NOT believing in something; it's not a prescription for a way of life.

It's very hard for a lot of people to grasp that it is possible not to believe in a god of some description.

Yes, to the point that Republicans are willing to support a candidate with a religion
that believes God is a 6'2 human living on a distant planet where 1 day is equal to 1000 earth years,
among many other ridiculous beliefs, but an atheist ? Oh HELL no.

I had to look up the reference, Pete. If you don't mind my asking, Pete, and it is a bit off topic, I know you are agnostic but is it a reaction to religion or just that you don't 'feel' god exists? For me, it's not so much a reaction to religion (although a lot of it sucks) but a general no 'feeling' that there is a god, if you know what I mean.

It's like this: believing in something for which there is no tangible or empirical evidence is, imo, a betrayal of the intellect.

I'm not anti-god(s) - it's impossible to be anti- something that I don't believe exists - but I am definitely anti-religion because it's all about control and power and fear. No need to think for yourselves; we'll tell you what to think and you just keep giving us money, whether you can afford it or not.

So I suppose it is mainly a reaction to religion(s).

I am very proud of two women friends of mine, a German and a Jew, who attended a concert in Sydney which unknown to them featured a skinhead band which displayed a swastika flag. My Jewish friend leapt on stage, grabbed the mike and told the crowd what she thought - No Nazis! No shoa! My German friend tore the flag down. They stopped the show - and no one stopped them.

Why I bring this up is the guy who did the Sikh temple shooting had a "white power" band before he went down this track. Although if someone had done at one of his concerts what my friend did - would someone have shot them?

That would be a very real possibility. Guns are freely available, and there is every likelihood that several audience members would be packing heat.

It would be an equally real possibility that they'd simply be beaten to a bloody pulp.
