Not going to get it from me, John.

The backing harmonies over the chorus of that one... perfection.

"Two versions of Womack's recording were released. The original version features Sons of the Desert (who, like Womack, was signed to MCA at the time) singing a counterpoint chorus alongside Womack's main chorus, while a second version of the song released for pop radio omits the counterpount chorus in favor of background vocals to accompany the main chorus."

Ahh.. thank you for that. It's definitely the version with Sons' backing.

Agreed ! That chorus is what 'hooked' me. The lyrics woo'd me and the video touched me, but that counterpoint chorus floored me.

    I agree. It's a beautiful song.

Performing drunk seems to have been a SOP of many country performers back in the day. But then there's a lot of rock musicians who played when they were messed up too, so we don't need to go down that road.

I like Johnny Cash a lot. His in-laws, The Carter Family, made some great music too.

Going into the Western Swing genre, I like Bob Wills And The Texas Playboys, mainly when they were doing instrumentals. Bob's tendency to call out random comments during the instrumental bits (things like "play the steel guitar, Leon!" or "That's Eldon Shamblin on electric guitar, two more payments and it's his! Yee-HAW!") kinda annoy me, but it's worth putting up with, because the band was awesome!

    Re: What's your favorite country/western song-artist??

BTW, I like Willie Nelson more as a songwriter than as a singer. He's got a really weird vocal phrasing when he sings, particularly when he's playing guitar. The words just seem to go all over the place sometimes, and others, he sounds like he's trying to spit the words out as fast as possible.

But, I like other people's versions of his songs, though. Elvis did great versions of Funny How Time Slips Away and Always On My Mind:

Of course, my favorite version of Always On My Mind is this one, because they totally dismantled it and turned into a dance song:

Oh, and no discussion of "country music" can go without a mention of this particular indiscretion from Kenny Rogers and The First Edition (with an assist from Glenn Campbell playing the fuzz guitar solo in the middle of the song):

This is the one genre of music that I definitely don't relate to.

For me, it RAP . . just don't dig it !?
The country/pop genre caught my ear, but genuine country/western is (for me) a hard pill to swallow.
Having said that, i can still pick some gems from those artists . . Willie, Marty, Ferlin and the one and only
    Johnny Cash.
