I'm sorry, but you just can't have an "ultimate" Yes live collection without something from Wembley 1978.
You just can't.

With so many various live recordings out there, from official albums/cd’s and dvd’s to an immense number of bootlegs, I thought it would be nice to create a personal ‘ultimate live collection’ and I dare everyone here to take the time to do the same.
A few things concerning my list: first of I like a good sound quality, so if I could use an official release then I chose to do so over a bootleg, even if the bootleg may have contained a better played version. I’m a big fan of the Union tour, so there are quite a few takes from that tour. SK and RoL I deliberately took of the OYE tour, because IMO the best versions of these songs ever where played on that tour. For ‘mind drive’ I took the Lugano recording. I took the whole of part 1, cut off the ‘my eyes see the coming revolution’ bit + acoustic solo bit at the start of part two and let part 1 sequence into part two (thanks to music cleaning lab), now making for one whole 12 minute song. For CD 3 to make all the songs fit within the 80 minutes of a CD (It went to 82 minutes), I had to speed up every song a tiny bit, but it works. Furthermore I let every song sequence into the next one, from the end applause at one song into the applause at the start of the next song, to make it appear as if it were one concert. This didn’t work on every song, because sometimes the loudness of the audience differs to much (whether it was recorded for a 10.000+ audience in an arena or a 1.500+ audience in a theater makes a difference), but on the majority this works.
So this is my……

Way too skewed toward latter day shows. I'd need to see substantially more from the seventies.
Personally I like to listen to single shows; I find nothing "Ultimate" about a collection of this nature.
And you speeded it up "to fit the CDs"!?!![]()

That is because in latter days many more shows/tours were released on CD or DVD, which means good sound quality. Furthermore my first 'yessish' show was ABWH in 1989, I was 16 years old then, and my first real Yes show was the Union tour. I did see the OYE tour, Ladder tour, Full Circle tour and 35th Anniversary tour after that. Basically the latter day tours have made much more of an impression upon me, then the 70's when I was just a little kid that hadn't heard of Yes......
The mind is like a parachute; it works much better when it's open.
I made myself an ultimate Yes live collection, and imagined it as seven different double and triple vinyl releases, including one rendition of each song only (with the exception of the Tales material).
Yessongs & Yesshows as volumes 1 & 3. Volume two is live Tales from MSG 2/18/74, just the TFTO portion.
Volume 4 is like a Yesshows sequel, pulling from the late-70s live shows, and using songs from that era that didn't make original Yesshows.
Volume 5 covers Drama, BG, ABWH and Union material & tours, and is definitely the least natural sounding of course, & so it's hardest to pretend it's real. But it's really a bunch of orphaned mini-eras crammed together in a way. And it makes volumes 6 & 7 sound cohesive.
Volume 6 is the Maryland Heights MO show from 6/1994, just the YesWest material though.
Volume 7 covers 1996 thru 2004.
I *KNOW* I have a post that chronicles the actual titles and stuff, but I've really wasted a ton of time trying to find that already, so ... maybe I can come in here later and edit that stuff in.
I think I'd find this task difficult, but I'd be tempted to have a lot of that first The Word Is Live disc.
Great stuff.

Yeah, completely daunting and time consuming. I trimmed all the tracks and did some eq and volume tweaking too, I'm a really sick individual. I thought I'd lost it while assembling this thing. Glad I did it in the long run though.
I did a version of this (to some extent) back in the day when I was avidly collecting live stuff. Generally I found that I did a series, kinda like this:
YES LIVE VOL. 1 - COMPLETE WEMBLEY 10/28/78 (2 CDs)
YES LIVE VOL. 2 - JERSEY CITY 1976 (2 CDs)
YES LIVE VOL. 3 - EDMONTON 1984 - 9012LIVE (1 CD)
etc etc etc
But... to just do a multi-disc collection of ultimate favorites? hmmm...... mebbe I should try this.
I do know that *in general*, even if there may be a glut of later live performances with better sound quality, I'm likely to go for an earlier, more vintage performance that might not necessarily be from the greatest source. It's no secret that I prefer live 1970s Yes over almost any other decade..![]()
