A Candle For A Pet

Since there's so many beloved pets here at Yesfans, I thought at this time I'd create a thread for any pet who might be ill, or has died. After all they are like our children. Place your memories of other pets here too.



My candle burns today for my little parakeet Guinevere. She is dying. She has a respiratory infection and we've been giving her an antibiotic, but she's not responding and I feel it will only be a few more days. She's almost 9 years old, so she's lived a happy life. I keep hoping I'm wrong and that she will recover, but it doesn't look that way right now.

It's tought when pets are ill.

My dog Bert has just had major surgery on his leg to remove an ulcer which has turned out to be cancerous. But, he's healthy and happy at the moment, so we are giving him loads of love and walks, until we have to do otherwise.

I'm sorry Cindy. Did you check that her little nostrils aren't clogged with a feather - just wondering because that happened to my lovebird once. I hope she gets better.

Jonah, I'm sorry about Bert. Pets are gifts of love. I don't understand why they have to go through things like this.

Carol, I wish there was a feather stuck, unfortunately there isn't. Her breathing is labored, her feathers are very ruffled, and she's gone to the floor of the cage now. She's too weak to sit on her perch.

We keep telling him how much we love him. Trouble is, we then go and stick a plastic bucket on his head and give him a bowl full of food that he can only get at by acting like a suction head on a vacuum cleaner. I think we are in danger of giving him mixed messages.

Oh, does Bert have to wear that collar that looks like a lampshade? My cat Marilyn had to wear one after eye surgery a few years ago. I guess they don't want Burt licking or biting his leg.

Yes 9 years is pretty good. Parakeets and Canaries usually have a lifespan between 8 - 10 years. Most of my birds have lived to be around that age.
I've had birds for 25 years, and my mother had them all the time too. I've always loved birds.

Cindy, when I first got my cockatiel, C.B., she became very ill very quickly. She had a resperatory infection. I took her to an exotic animals vet. They nebulized her. They kept for three days. They put her in this little tank and filled the tank with some sort of vapors. It healed her.

I've owned many birds in my life. I love birds. They are so affectionate. I hope that Guenivere shows improvement Cindy. Maybe cover her up and let her take a nap.

Oh Jonah, I'm so sorry to hear about your little Bert. I hope he heals and recovers from his tumor. Regarding those Elizabethian collars: You can actually cut those down considerably, to maybe just three inches beyond Bert's nose. It stll prevents him from getting at the incision, and it gives him more flexibility.

I'm hoping I don't have to post here for a long time. Niki is 12, going on 13 and I hope she's around for many years to come.

My little Guinevere died tonignt at around 9:00. She was lying on the floor of the cage and I picked her out and held her and she died in my hands. She never made a sound. I must have held her for about an hour after that. We put her in a little box and we're going to bury her tomorrow down by the lake.

She was just a little bird, but she's been with me for 9 years and I'm going to miss her terribly. It's very quiet here tonight, without the sound of her tweeting and chirping, but know she's perched right now in a tree near the Rainbow Bridge singing.

I know some people will think - it's just a bird, but that's not the point. You loved her and she was part of your life.

Thanks Anne. She was a very sweet bird, and she loved my two cats. They would sit and look at her and she'd come over to the side of the cage and try to bite their fur. It's funny they never tried to get her. They would try and smell her and she'd pick at their whiskers.

I have a photo of my cat Puff sleeping by her cage, and I'll have to find it and post it.

She was never sick so she had a healthy, happy 9 years. I'm glad of that.
