    YES 50
    Hall 1, The Sage
    Gateshead
    UK

    2018-03-18

I've been listening to YES for as long as I've had an interest in music. There's nothing quite like them – unique sound, stellar musicianship and, over the years, they've been more creative than most. Still, there's been the odd "twist and turn" (some very odd indeed), and these days is no exception, with classic-era YES members straddled across two touring bands, each playing the music of YES.

Both versions still attract a fair amount of attention, and truth be told I probably favour the other version because of the combination of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman (Trevor Rabin plays his part well…but then I prefer Steve Howe on lead and rhythm guitar duties).

Whilst not quite sold out, Hall 1 at The Sage is very nearly full of (All Good) people and brimming with anticipation…or at least brimming with as much anticipation as is feasible at our times of life.

Eight O'Clock prompt, lights down and in time honoured tradition Stravinsky's Firebird Suite leads us in (might have been a bit louder, but there you go). The stage set comprises of three video panels at the back of the stage, onto which YES related imagery is shown throughout. At the conclusion, the band take their positions and launch into "Yours Is No Disgrace".

Having seen the "other version" of the band last year, I'd forgotten just how good – and how important to the sound and feel of YES – Steve Howe is. Great touch, and those oh, so familiar tones and textures. His contribution alone made the evening worthwhile…takes me right back.

That said, there are no "passengers" in this band, and whilst Geoff Downes might remind me of Yegglier times (not my favourite, although accept some do like the Drama era) he puts in a cracking shift with enthusiasm.

Two sets. One of classic "hits", the second, largely dominated by a long swim on Topographic Oceans. Whilst well received, from listening to the comments on the way out it seemed to have been a bit of a Marmite moment for some, although the majority (me included) in favour.

Oddly (from a timing perspective), Alan White took to the drum stool half way through Ritual, and remained there for the rest of the show. Hasn't enjoyed the best of health of late (and it shows), but great to see him there in whatever capacity.

Two long "goodnight kisses" closed proceedings with encores consisting of stupendous versions of Roundabout and Starship Trooper (delicious work by Steve Howe on both).

Depending on your point of view, you can be left wishing for Anderson/Howe/Wakeman/White to…do something "together" for the half centenary, or else just be pleased to get bites of two YES cherries this year. As one doesn't seem to be on the cards, I recommend you do the latter, although if there were more of a reUNION, I'd for one would be trying to push my way to the front of the line for tickets.

    Set 1:
    01 The Firebird Suite
    02 Yours Is No Disgrace
03 I've Seen All Good People
    04 Sweet Dreams
05 South Side of the Sky
    06 Mood for a Day
    07 Wonderous Stories
    08 Parallels
    09 And You and I

    Set 2:
01 The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)
    02 Leaves of Green
03 Ritual (Nous sommes du soleil)
    04 Encore Break
    05 Roundabout
    06 Starship Trooper

    Played By

    Steve Howe: Guitar
    Jon Davison: Vocals, guitar
    Billy Sherwood: Bass, vocals
    Geoff Downes: Keyboards, vocals
    Jay Schellen: Drums
    Alan White: Drums (mid-ritual onwards)

I’ll grab a copy when I get home and listen to it before the real thing in Brighton tomorrow evening.

Nice overview from the taper as well - probably echoes much of my thoughts.

As I don't do Torrents from Dime (got banned a long time ago, and I don't know why...), I am eagerly awaiting this to be added to the Yessongs.nl site soon or added to WeTransfer or another similar thing.

    Yes
    #Yes50 50th Anniversary Tour

    June 11, 2018

    Steve Howe
    Alan White
    Geoff Downes
    Billy Sherwood
    Jon Davison
    Jay Schellen
    and Tony Kaye

Lineage: Sony ECM-717 (mic) / Sony PCM-M10 (recorder) > 16/44 (cuts & fades and normalization using Audacity) > CD wav (track splitting) > MP3Tag (for file tagging) > FLAC (using Traders Little Helper) Level 8

    Setlist (2:26:51):

    01 Firebird Suite intro
    02 Close To The Edge
    03 Nine Voices
    04 Parallels
    05 Mood For A Day
06 Leaves of Green (from "The Ancient")
07 We Can Fly From Here
    08 Sweet Dreams
    09 Heart Of The Sunrise
    10 intro - Perpetual Change
    11 Does It Really Happen
12 Soon (from "The Gates of Delirium")
    13 Awaken (enter Alan White)
14 Yours Is No Disgrace (enter Tony Kaye)
    15 Roundabout
    16 Starship Trooper

Notes: This is my 20th concert by a band that calls itself Yes. It's been rare that I've seen the same line-up for consecutive shows and this was no exception. I really enjoyed the setlist and I also thought everyone played very well. It was fun to see Tony Kaye back on stage for the first time since 1994. We were in the 27th row, just left of center, five rows behind the mixing desk, which partially obstructed our view.

The stage set was pretty good for the venue. I think the performance was pretty good, but, Jon Davison's voice is a bit shrill in points to my taste. Steve Howe is the show's main attraction (to me) and he doesn't disappoint, though, the beard isn't doing him any favors. My neighbor attended with us and, while he's seen Yes at least once before, he's not a huge, knowledgeable fan, asked "who was the old guy they wheeled on toward the end to play drums?" My wife Lori likes Yes and has seen them herself over 10 times, but, she is not a Steve Howe fan - she sees this version as "disrespectful" to Jon Anderson's songs - yet, she enjoyed the musicianship and the setlist, too. I kind of agree with her, but, Steve is my favorite non-Beatle guitarist and I love these songs. If there's a band calling itself Yes playing nearby, I'm probably going to go see it.

Sound is pretty decent - couple of mic bumps, some clappers and nearby talkers, but, nothing major nor frequent. Acoustic sections are quieter than the rest.

Finally: please don't sell the recording, but, otherwise, do with it what you wish. Share it and trade it, and remember: these and other greats will not be around forever, so, let's enjoy them while we have them. Best wishes to all of the Yesfans out there and Namaste.

    Festival Stage

I only taped this and Glenn Hughes (already on the tracker)

    source: Zoom H2 Audience recording
    length: 90.00
quality: Ok, some talkers, sample in the first comment

Yes managed to get a longer set time than all other bands except the headliners,
but this fell short when they were 15 minutes late to go on stage. This means they
cut the set, something I was afraid of. Sure, I had no hopes of hearing Awaken at
the festival, but it would have been nice to get I am waiting.

Still, I enjoyed the show very much, especially Jon. I didn't care much for Trevors
playing on the 70's stuff, he seemed to struggle with South side of the sky, but his
singing was nice and his playing on "his" songs was impeccable.

Rick Wakeman was cool. As he always is.

All in all a nice show, I had just hoped for those 105 minutes as opposed to 90.

    setlist:
    01 Intro / Cinema
    02 Hold on
03 South side of the sky
04 I've seen all good people
    05 Changes
    06 And you and I
    07 Rhythm of love
    08 Heart of the sunrise
09 Owner of a lonely heart (incl. Sunshine of your love)
    10 Perpetual change
    11 Roundabout

    Re: Yes Torrents

A new torrent has been uploaded to dime:

YES Featuring ANDERSON, RABIN, WAKEMAN - QUINTESSENTIAL 50th ANN. TOUR - Newcastle City Hall, UK 2018-06-12

    Yes Featuring Anderson Rabin Wakeman
    Quintessential YES 50th Anniversary Tour
    City Hall
    Newcastle upon Tyne
    Uk
    2018-06-12

Following seeing the "other" outfit bearing a similar name earlier in the year, my appetite was whetted for the arrival of this version. Most people have their preference as to which is for them. Both have their features, both have their faults, but, importantly, both have the capacity to take you somewhere special.

I prefer this version, but nothing I say at this point is going to change anyone's mind one way or another, so I'll go no further in that respect. Someone once told me "opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one, but most of the time they're best kept private".

If the City Hall wasn't sold out then it must have been very close to being. A bit of a crackle in the air, it wasn't short on atmosphere. Three video screens at the back (deja vu all over again?), banks of keyboards to the right, drums to the back left & a few amps & mics in between, all shrouded in just enough dry ice to create an air of expectancy without risk of causing respiritory issues with the audience of "a certain age".

This time around there were to be two sets, split with a 30 minute interval. No support.

Both sets were based around YES "classics", seasoned with "newer" stuff (post 1980).
Whatever your prejudices band or material wise, this is a class act.
Jon's just "high on life" - a happier, hippier person you'll struggle to find, and it's infectious. He IS the voice of YES.

Rick, an imposing figure, repleat with glittery cloak and tongue firmly in cheek to match - a MASTER in curmudgeonly keyboard playing. Wonderful, wonderful musician, and great to hear the old-school, analogue MOOGs getting an outing.

Whilst Trevor adds a different seasoning to the older YES numbers, they still sound like..YES. Doesn't pick up an acoustic instruments throughout, but...whilst everyone has their favourite YES guitarist, there were no detractors judging by the smiles and general good vibes that prevailed even beyond the show's conclusion.

I read a comment many years ago on another YES torrent along the lines of "not only is Awaken the best piece of music by YES, but it's the best piece of music - period". If tonight's anything to go by, even if I don't agree then I can see where he's coming from. It's huge - bewildering, meandering, captivating...an experience.

Anyway, sit yourself down in a darkened room, put on your headphones and you be the judge.

    Everyone there enjoyed the following:

    S102 Cinema
    S102 Hold On
S104 South Side Of The Sky
S105 I've Seen All Good People

None of us are getting any younger, including the band. See them while you can & say "thank you" by buying their music in order to top up their pension funds...
