Yes, Scoot, the thing that is officially referred to as the "Harmonised Rickenbacker Bass."

I'd be willing to bet that none of the people who completely dislike Tormato play bass.

    Again, ABSOLUTELY.

His playing on Tormato, and Ill go as far to say THROUGHOUT...is stellar..

The Harmonised Ric is the stuff...I love it..
Future Times/Rejoice....Don't Kill the Whale, OTSWOF.....
Its a pity he didnt use it again really...
But then that brings us to Drama..
    Which is another Chris masterpiece

The cool thing with Drama is the Chris and Alan teamwork. Each one not only plays great throughout, but makes the other sound a little better, as if either one needed the help.

Machine Messiah is my favorite Chris performance of the 80s.

Machine Messiah is one of (if not THE) Chris bass performance ever...

Its another mind blower..and absolutely ...again..the interplay between Alan and Chris stumps me at every turn on this one.

Alan's new band is playing Machine Messiah in their set..Alan informed Chris of this..
    Chris quote...directly.."Are you F***ing mad?"

Its an incredible bass line. To this day it astounds, and its so seamless, so perfect, the speed, the natural nature of it all...Its the keyboard line, listen close!! Chris is replicating the fast runs of the keyboard line....incredible!

Before I retire for the evening,

Shoot High, Aim Low and I'm Running.

    Chris's best work? No

Greatest Rock BASS Moments in History? I'm going to have to go with YES!!

The cool thing about a bassist of Chris's caliber is that his second string work can still qualify as a GRBM in H.

    TRUE DAT!!!! JL

Im Running actually qualifies as far as Im concerned...who comes up with lines like that in 1987???

    WHO??
    Um, Uncle Chris thats who.

Hence why a lot of his work deserves more respect..
And yes, I agree...when someones worst material is still better than someones best in the 80's...people need to take notice...

With a few exceptions this list is like a RRHOF list. Foghat? It's a popularity thing so a lot of subjective, not necessarily talented, additions are included.

It's supposed to be Greatest, so only the Greatest.

    For Chris I'd only include:
    Roundabout (completely unique)
Gates of Delerium (possibly the entire Relayer album)
Awaken (only with the bass pedals, but Turn of the Century is much more imaginative)

There were a lot of things missed on that list, but it's only Rock and Roll.

Not a bad composite considering what another list, Rolling Stones, came up with for the top 100 songs ...and did anyone read the editorial page of RS in their last issue? WHEW, some steamed and flaming readers had their say.

How about "Does it Really Happen"? I believe that "Drama" on the whole is one of Chris' greatest performances.

Squire is an amazing bassist and I'm glad he got his due in this count but there should have been more, certainly Gates and MM. Probably they are looking at the commercial success of the song?

Maybe not the rock they're talking about, but Gates is a bass masterpiece. His instrument is just as instrumental in the development and progression of the song as the keyboard and guitar. that song is brilliantly dense.

Haha yeah i happened to get that issue. No Yes, eh? I was going to email Rolling Stone and give them a piece of mind, but then remembered that all people don't have as good a judgement as us yes fans

and i'd also like to add...

    Dark Star - Grateful Dead

    to the list.
    Have you seen the bridge?
    Where's that confounded bridge?

Phil Lesh- Playing in the Band and The Other One.

These songs usually contained some really tasty Phil licks. I'm not pointing to any one performance, I'm just saying that when the Dead did these songs, a GRBM in H was about to be busted out by Phil.

Jack Bruce---"Crossroads" ( with CREAM ) As Clapton wails, Jack Bruce takes the bass to new lows and literally initiates the notion of 'lead bass'. Incredible playing!

John Paul Jones---"Dazed and Confused"--as the tempo changes, this unheralded bassist takes off like a bat out of h&ll!

John Entwistle---"( Can You See ) the Real Me" from QUADROPHENIA---beyond brilliance!!

How could I have missed that?? its not on the list, really???

Lemme check...ahhh it's number 2 on the list..
Its an incredibly satisfying and complicated bass line that only The Ox could have pulled off...

    Love every second of it!!

I must admit that I quickly responded without even having read the list. I too, was pleased to see the Mr. Squire mentioned so frequently ( there is justice in this world...sometimes ).Yep, the "Ox" could go subterranean and on a lightning roll to boot!

    1. Nam Nam - Helmut Koller (Kraan) - greatest bass solo I've ever heard!

    2. Romantic Warrior - Stanely Clarke (RTF) - acoustic bass at its very best.

    3. We'll Let You Know - John Wetton (KC) - words can't describe this one.

    4. One of These Days - Roger Waters (PF) - Great pulsating bass rhythm.

    5. Crosscurrents - Hansford Rowe (Moerlen's Gong) - fantastic "slap"-bass playing.

    6. The Boys in the Band - Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) - Ray at his best.

    7. Knife Edge - Greg Lake (ELP) - Fantastic...

    8. Instrumental Illness - Oteil O'Bridge (Allman Brothers) - Superb bass harmonics!

I'm not familiar with this particular piece, but Oteil is an UNBELIEVABLE player.
