I was pretty upset when I saw the postings for all time guitarists with Steve posted at 69. I don't know about anyone else, but I think it's all a popularity contest. Come-on Kurt Cobain leading Steve in the polls, not to mention all the other Pop icons. Steve is a virtuoso, he should be rated with guitarist like Al Dimeola, John McLuaghlin (sp?), et al. Nice tribute, but Steve is easily at the top of the list as far as talent. I like Steve Ray Vaughan, too, but he's all Blues. No comparison.

Makes me sick, sick, sick, sick sick! Oh, hi junomon, look at the other threads for this popularity contest and you'll find it makes most of us...
confused? Oh, I should speak for myself.

Here's the thread: http://www.yesfans.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7945.
The list is from RollingStone.com. Above Howe you've got the likes of Jack White (from the White Stripes) and Johnny Ramone. Makes me sick!

Steve is in a league of his own. He just can't be compared with anyone I can think of. You just can't rate someone like Roy Clark or Joe Satriani or David Gilmour in a comparison chart with people like Eddy Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton? It just becomes a popularity contest or who is fasionable at the time? It hurts just thinking about how you would put these guy's on a scale? whatever way you do it it is ultimatly worthless!
Can anyone rate Trevor Rabin to Steve Howe? Lots of people do? I never understood it. It's apples and oranges they are guitarists and experts of their craft but how can you compare different styles?
I am of the thinking that Trevor never could play Steve's stuff the way it was intended to be played and Steve really could not play Trevors stuff the way he did it either? Together I alway's felt a competition between them, and Steve is not a big showman. Tevor likes the camera and likes the stage more than Steve. I have a DVD somewhere and It has the whole bunch playing together. When the old songs are going, every time Trevor steps in for a lead piece it is well done, it is brilliant, it is showmanship at it's finest. But it is not what the song was intended to be and I kind of feel like Trevor over steps his place, so to speak. And the song looses it's mystique from the medling. No matter Now if you want simple preferences I will take Steve over Trevor every day and twice on Sunday's!
But Some of that "Second Generation" ( I call it) YES music is really good and that is Trevor's influence. Can't take that from him. Polls would only be worth something if they were done by the musicians themselves, but then you'd end up with one vote for every person on the list.
Don't worry about Steve's popularity amongst the musicians crowd, in here he is an absolute guitar God! and has become one of the Old Masters! He is truly a legend and that will never be forgotten.
I hope I get to shake his hand someday! He has baffled me for many years with his style. 26 to be exact, now that commands respect all by itself!

Jack White of the White Stripes?????? #17!!! Good lord!!!
Gary Moore my favorite, isn't even on that list. He's the ultimate guitarist in my book. (Sorry Trevor, please forgive me!)

"Gary Moore my favorite, isn't even on that list. He's the ultimate guitarist in my book."
I love the story about Gary, who was playing one night in a club and looked out in the crowd and Jimi Hendrix was right up front watching him play. If I remember right there were other members of the band and the crowd who used to see Pete Townsend, Eric Clapton and other's I think at his Gig's from time to time.
Gary is another Legend! You just can't put these guy's on a chart it does not work that way, Ya know? You either love their style or you don't.

Was the poll also about influence? You may not like Cobain or Ramone, but their influence on music is undeniable.

Yes Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Gary Moore's. I remember reading that somewhere.
I guess I wouldn't expect him to be on that list. He's one of rock's most underrated guitarists (both from a technical and compositional point of view.) He was born in Belfast, Ireland, and he remains relatively unknown in the U.S. but he's had great success in most other parts of the world, especially in Europe.
Funny I discovered him on Greg Lake's solo album in a song called Nuclear Attack - and that was it for me!
I'm glad you've heard of him.

Rabin metallized and bluesied Yes; this is not typical of them.
Howe is their proper polyphonic developmental path. Rabin is a classical piano prodigy but got big on large metal anthemic stuff that's more wall of sound. Smart but not that Yessy.
Rolling Stone is about sales money, youth and pop.
Just because someone influenced pop a lot, that doesn't mean they're a great guitarist.
A bit off-topic, but Gibson did/does make a Gary Moore Les Paul. I love the color.

I agree that the Rolling Stone should say "Most influential on pop" guitarists. I find it amazing Steve Howe even made the list.

It is indeed a gorgeous guitar. I'm extremely familiar with it believe me. In most of the photos I have of him he's playing it. Unfortunately his is pretty worn and doesn't look quite as pretty. He works magic with it that's for sure. He has a black Gibson also.
Okay sorry got carried away. -- Back to the original topic.

Considering that Steve is in the Guitar Player Magazine hall of fame for being voted Best Overall Guitarist for 5 years that is amazingly ironic.

There are guitarists that may have better chops than Steve, especially at his age now.
However, I don't think there are many, if ANY, guitarists that are as good as he is playing so many styles.
He is, I think, by far the most VERSATILE guitarist ever to have strummed.
And it's not virtuostic show-offery either. He can use so many styles, sounds, techniques, instruments APPROPRIATELY and with great taste and often restraint.
A guitarist friend of mine says what he loves the most about Steve Howe is what he DOESN'T play. Nothing extraneous or "off."

Exactly, but his chops were still phenomenal August 30 in London, Ontario.

My sister and I were appalled when they came out with that list....Gee, who thought Hendrix would be #1? derrrrrrrrr.......
We both said Steve should be at the top, if not the top 5. What a bunch of crap! It IS a popularity contest, who's well-known, etc....I hate these lists with a passion as it's all "a bunch of sheep" ("followers" if you will) putting them together. It's not about who are the greatest guitarists in history (which we know Steve is among them), but who are well-known at the time, who's popular...Jack White of The White Stripes #17 and Steve Howe #69???!!!
To those freakin' morons: "Give me a @$#%*& break and get your heads out of your a@@ already!!"

Not difficult to understand why ... probably more of a poll of which guitarists music do you like most? Clearly not many prog fans voted? How may were objective?
As a player, Steve has to be near the top .. he has such versitility which you don't find in most.

Even if orange is the happiest color, Wakeman should NOT be wearing yellow or orange. I like my blonde haired men to wear green. (I know, I know...who cares?! I do, I do.)
Must have been fun to take that picture, Yescelt. I'm a lot envious.

Cobain, single-handedly, took out the big hair bands. Thanks for that Kurt! I could almost listen to the radio again during the 1990's.
(And too bad he didn't miss on his aim.)

I hated Kurt Cobain. He had no talent and all he did was scream.
Too bad he shot himself. Now he'll be famous.
The 90's sucked. I stopped listening to music altogether.

I love the way Rick dresses- it must have affected the way I do onstage for decades. He dresses down backstage but he had great outfits forTsongas
for us.
I'm telling Rick on you Saturday and then Alan and I will compare shorts and kilts
early January!

i love Howe...but please...do not discount Stevie Ray....i have never heard another guitarist play rhythm AND lead at the same time...SRV's approach to blues was one of a kind...and do not toss out playing the blues as being easy...not the way SRV played...his chops are utterly unique and extremely technical...he just made it look so easy cuz he was that good...we lost a GREAT guitarist that foggy night in Wisconsin....

Cobain was the John Lennon for the kids of the 90's....he not only stopped hair bands...he crushed heavy metal and made grunge a household name...people may not like his music (i personally don't)...but it is foolish to deny the fact that he was quite influential in rock history....actually some of his lyrics are quite thought provoking....

Cobain also stuck a fork in the Punk Band craze!.......Give Cobain credit for bringing the rock scene back!
Now......Who is going to "b*tch slap" rap and hiphop into extinction....??
