View Full Version : Should Chris Rejoin The Syn?
ELLIS

With all this talk of The Syn reforming, surely Chris must rejoin as he was the only bass-player that band had, just like Yes. For Chris to rejoin his old band would be really cool! Obviously he would have to do this as a side project to Yes. Thoughts anyone?

This is news to me. It really depends on if Chris would be up for it. Under no circumstances would I want to see Yes fishless, but it might be kind of a kick for him to revisit old bandmates, and take a helping from a different creative stew.

The Syn was one of the foundations of Yes and it would be great to hear them with Chris on bass. But no way should he leave Yes and no doubt he won't. Are Syn going to support Yes next year? They are supposed to have a great singer. Any more news on this?

That would be cool if the Syn opened for Yes and Chris did a couple of numbers with them. I have some of their material. Chris was a master of his instrument even then. Check out his parts on "Grounded" and the intro to "Flower Man."
Another possibility is Chris could guest on the new material they're recording and do a few club dates with them. I'd be happy with either.
(edit: Oh man, what a great topic for my 800th post!)

I don't think it would be much of an original reunion project seeing as how Chris' close friend Andrew Jackman is no longer with us....and after the way Pete was treated in Yesspeak it is highly unlikely he would agree to playing again with CS.

Good grief surely the more music these guys produce the better. I would love to hear modern Syn.
Yeah and while we're at it hows about some Mabel Greer's Toyshop!
Wow....
Maybe the farewell tour could be Yes plus some side projects!
Yes supported by Flash, Badger MGT, Syn, Winston's Fumbs (?), Asia, etc.
I'd pay a whole lotta gold for that show...

lets put an end to the next questions as well... should Steve Howe rejoin Bodast ? No. Should Rick rejoin The Strwbs ? I don't think so. Should Jon rejoin The Warriors ? Nope. Should Alan rejoin The Plastic Ono Band ? I don't see it.

If you take a look at the Syn website, click on NEWS and you'll see new photos of Chris with 2 members of The Syn and they were CS's guests after the show at Wembley!
There's a hint Chris MAY work with them.
Confirmation of this: click on SEND SYN AN EMAIL asking about Chris and any future involvement (if you are wild on the idea in a positive way, then say so!) and you may get a reply from Steve Nardelli saying that.......Find out for yourself - I did!
Chris is certainly keeping himself busy!
Is it just me, or do others feel slightly unnerved when they read interviews with Yes, or past members of Yes?
I mean, there appears to be some arrested development thang going on with some of these guys, and some serious ego problems.
Am I being harsh?

No you are not being harsh. You've hit the nail right on the head. I know for a fact that there are serious issues, as you put it, with at least one ex-member.

Great 800th post Northerner.
I think you are close to the mark. Maybe we can get Steve Nardelli to give us some more input. Think that will happen?
I believe Chris can handle it. His energy level is thru the roof. Do I want him to re-join the Syn? What? Are you crazy? No WAY! Leave Chris in YES and let him play with Syn.
um...that sounds a little provacative...YES Chris, Syn... (?)
Where did I go with that? Help, somebody, get me back...
Michele

I think it is a tremendous opportunity for him, and of course it would never conflict with his YES responsibilities. Chris guards his status as sole-original-member-present-throughout-all with great pride. (grins)
To hear some of that Syn music with Chris on bass -- with his now fully developed chops and signature sound -- would just be icing on the cake for an already delicious recipe! That Syn stuff is *really* good!
And of course, so much of what The Syn was all about was transferred into YES when YES formed... the vocal stylings, the harmonies, the orchestral leanings, etc.
To listen to The Syn is very much like listening to the embryonic YES. And it could so easily have gone either way at the time. Nardelli is a GREAT vocalist! It was just the chance of the meeting and the changes of the times that brought Anderson into the fold and led to the formation of YES.
But the musical leanings did not change that much when YES formed, and the two bands are still inextricably linked historically, stylistically, muscially, and conceptually.
The old Syn material is totally representative of the musical stylings of the mid-60s, with all of that wonderful experimentation and flower-child perspective. It reminds me of a strange combination of the Beatles and Donovan, but with a *much* greater free exploration of instrumentation, harmonies, thematic development, and perspective.
I had the opportunity in Denver last weekend to hear one of The Syn's newest tracks, called (I think) "Illusion." I must say, this is an amazing song! It has great lyrics, great vocal performances, moments of strength and intensity, and moments of great delicacy and elegance instrumentally.
The Syn are definitely in the prog mode. They have remained true to those roots. And the guys in the band have just gotten so much better with age and experience.
I think it would be a truly miraculous, and totally moving thing, to hear Chris play with them again. Obviously there is a lot of very happy history between Chris and his Syn mates, and I think he would just blossom even more in that setting.
So I have no fears at all about Chris engaging with The Syn. He will always be a member of YES. He will never leave that band. We know this. But there is absolutely no reason why he shouldn't participate in such a great opportunity to play new material, rejoin with his old friends, and see where the project takes them.
I think it's a wonderful thing. Chris -- Go For It! (smiles)

I think Michele has made a wonderful assessment of the Syn possibilities. She has the advantage of being close to the band, which helps. But I agree Nardelli is a GREAT singer. I had the privelege to meet him at Red Rocks and he's also a real nice person. I would love to hear the titles Michele is talking about, when or how is that possible? If Squire did team up with the band, it would be a fantastic gig! Squire and Nardelli together again would be a very special happening. Let it happen, guys, it would make a lot of people very happy!

Hmmm... that must have been that blond gal who was engaging him in conversation. But I didn't see anyone else with her at the time. The folks who were hanging around with Stephen in that area were Mark Johnston the photographer, Ron Gordon the recording engineer, and me in the green dress.

I felt when I answered this that it would be a step backwards for Chris to participate and really, the chance of he and Peter actually doing this together is as grim as trevor coming back to support Steve.
A guest appearance by Chris, as he did with Esquire would be much more feasable.

I think the Squire/Nardelli tie up is much more interesting than Squire/Banks. I don't care how that happens, I just think it would be great if it did. I just read on Yes Services that Squire and Nardelli did an interview together in Denver, so clearly there's a chance they will work together again and if it has to be without Banks brcause of his vibe towards Yes, I think he's no loss.
Nardelli is the creative talent with a great voice, Banks is just another guitarist.

If Chris plays outside Yes, let it be the Syn. This would be back to his roots, very exciting and fullfilling for him and fans alike. His work outside Yes since Fish years ago has been disappointing. Conspiracy doesn't work on any level, sorry to say.
If steve Nardelli is as good as his reputation and according to this forum he is, then it would be great.

Dear themike:
Hey Michele, good to meet up one day. How do I get an invite to your pre-show parties?
Whenever I host a pre-show party, *everyone* is invited who is attending that particular concert in that particular city. And usually, I only go to one show per tour. This two-show Colorado adventure was a very unusual thing for me.
We'll just have to wait until the band is ready to tour again and see what cities make the cut. If finances permit at the time, I usually go to the city closest to Oklahoma, or to the *weekend* show that is closest to Oklahoma. And when I go to a YES concert, I always try to arrange some kind of pre-show gathering, or volunteer to help someone else who is hosting, because I *love* to meet other YES fans. That is the absolute best part of what I do... getting to know the other loving fans. (smiles)
So we'll see what happens in the future. If you don't see me posting something to the forum about a party, you can always "private message" me, or send an email and ask what plans are in the works. If anything is happening, I'll definitely tell you. I hope it works out! ...and I hope we don't have to wait *too* long for another show. (smiles) The guys definitely deserve a much-needed rest. So patience is the name of the game for the time being.
...and while we are waiting, there are all kinds of supremely cool and outstanding things happening on The Syn horizon. We'll keep our ear to the rail about that stuff. I predict some very fun and exciting times ahead for all of us! (smiles)
Have a great day!

Michele, any more news on will-he,won't he join the Syn?! It's looks more like something's happening every day. Like to know, the tensions reaching boiling point!!
You're right, Louis! Something new *IS* happening every day! (smiles)
And I suppose technically Chris *has* rejoined the Syn.
I quote:
"Chris Squire has joined Martyn Adelman and Steve Nardelli as a partner in Syn Music. The company handles all things related to the band and is about to release its much anticipated archive collection, Original Syn, in a special edition presentation in association with YesServices."
Source: http://www.synmusic.net/index2.html
Now, that is a *business* partnership -- which may, or may not, be a performing partnership. We just don't know right now.
The real remaining question is: Will Chris perform on The Syn's new album of new original material, that will be released *after* "Original Syn"? (smiles)
That is a question I cannot answer at this moment. But you KNOW that if there is some solid and confirmed news about that, I will *definitely* tell you.
Everything that is happening with this project is being done in a completely transparent way, with news announced as it happens, and nothing withheld from the fans that has been confirmed. The fans are the most important part of the equation, so we're doing everything possible to keep everyone in the loop at all times.
I am as excited about this as everyone else is, and so far, everything has been going so well, in such a positive direction, with so few obstacles, that it just seems like it was meant to be.
All I can say right now is: "Stand by!" There will be a lot of activity this coming week in preparation for the pre-sale. As soon as the web-building is finished, tested, and fully functional, we'll go "Live" ... and you'll hear about it here first. I'll stop by this thread with the announcement, just before I send out the newsletter. Give us another week or so to get it together. It won't be long now! Promise! (smiles)
Thanks for your huge enthusiasm and support! This is such a GREAT project! And soooo much fun! Have a great day, one and all!

My father used to watch the Syn at the Marquee in London in the 60's. He says they were a brilliant group, very theatrical and progressive for their day and not surprising they developed into Yes. This disc will also include a new mini-epic verson of YES' "Time and a Word" performed by The Syn. See sale site for track listings.
2. A 20-page commemorative archival booket in full color, containing rare photographs, press clippings, and information from the 1960s which tracks the band's history and development. The opening passage was contributed by Phil Collins.
3. The "Chris Squire Interview" Disc, recorded in Denver, Colorado on September 11, 2004, in which Chris Squire and Stephen Nardelli answers questions submitted by the fans. This amazing 48-minute interview features Chris at his best, full of wonderful stories, great memories, laughter and wit.
The CD package has been put together by Stuart Batsford, former head of compilations at Warner Brothers International and considered the leading authority in this field. He was responsible for the Led Zeppelin Collection, one of the biggest sellers of all time. The CD cover art and commemorative booklet were designed by Clinic in London.
Project manager, Jon Webster, was the head of Virgin Records for 12 years, and is still a consultant to Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Van Morrison. Spectrum Media is the manufacturer.
Production leadership for the entire package is by Syn Music Ltd.: Stephen Nardelli, Martyn Adelman, and Chris Squire. This is a product of the highest quality, and the British music press is already calling it "the archive release of the year."

Hello, all!
I'm sorry there wasn't pricing information in the newsletter. It's been a wild ride for the past couple of weeks just getting the sale site working properly! My apologies! ...I think I'm just a little frazzled! (grins)
The price of one copy of "Original Syn" YesServices edition, is $25 plus shipping/handling, which for domestic U.S. shipping is $5. International shipping outside the U.S. is, of course, more expensive.
The shipping weight looks like it's going to be about 2 lbs., and everything will be in a DVD-sized case, which will accommodate the size of the archival booklet and the 2 CDs.
Any other questions, just ask! (smiles)

Just listened to the mp3 exert of Chris' interview on the Syn web site, www.synmusic.net. He's sounding great and if Illusion is anything to go by, so is the new Syn material!

I would like to see Chris back with the Syn again. They are one of the leading phsyche bands from the 60's and it would be cool to hear them again today with the mainstay of their original line-up: Squire, Banks, Nardelli. Very cool!

I just listened to the mp3's on the Syn website. Short but wowie!
Last Performance - very 60's, very neat!
Chris Squire interview - mesmerising!
Illusion - mind blowing! Superb Nardelli vocals against a driving wall of sound! I had the privilege of meeting Nardelli at a Yes gig - an honour!
Can't wait for the cd's next month.

The Syn cd pack is out this week. Looking forward to hearing it and the new material.
This is a good road for Squire to set off down, Syn is full of quality, led by great Nardelli vocals and writing. Parallel lines, Yes and Syn!

I think the Syn is the perfect supplement for Chris when he's not playing with Yes. I think this will provide a fresh outlet for his talent, which is real good for all his fans. This is a top quality band. Looking forward to the outcome very much.

A new thread could start here: Should Chris continue with Syn or Conspiracy?
I'd like both, but if a choice HAD to be made....?

Me? I'd pick THE SYN.
Chris returning to his old roots?? That's what I'd love to see, as well as hear!!
tdonnay
11-12-2004, 01:19 AM
The Syn for me too. Conspiracy has never really happened musically. On the other hand, Syn has a fantastic singer in Nardelli, something Conspiracy lacks. I think Nardelli is also the only singer who could get away with replacing Jon in Yes.

I am a big Syn fan and I am very happy that Chris will play with them again. Steve Nardelli would be a perfect replacement for Jon Anderson in Yes, but I would rather he was with the Syn. Syn is better than Conspiracy.
Squire*Fan725
11-12-2004, 07:53 AM
Now what I'd love to see, is a SYN TOUR!!! Oh yeah, that would rock, especially if they played the small clubs, like The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ!!

Thanks everyone for all your input with these 5 pages of answers!
Now check the Syn website. Chris WILL be recording with them, and he & Nardelli have written some songs together, 1 of which is called "Cathedral of Love".
Is this exciting or what?!
This does more good for my angina than all my pills put together!
Next year is so gonna rock!!!

I heard a piano playing and Chris singing!!
Sounded really cool, from the little bit I heard..
Sounds like a cool song!

It was just piano and Chris singing..Im almost 100% that it was Cathedral Of Love..which is the single that Chris will be playing on for the forthcoming Syn CD of new material!
Just a little snippet was all I heard...being the dummy I am I was still asleep so I couldnt listen live...so glad I got the message though!

I've been interested in hearing the syn play for quite a while now. From what I have heard from all of you they sound good, but I agree with most of the others, that say Chris should stick with Yes as his main project.

I agree, but the Syn is a close second for me. Get a listen to Nardelli's vocals, he's got a great voice. I can't wait to hear him and Chris together again.
Scoot's got the inside tarck on this, he's even getting messages from the studio while he's still sleeping! I guess they're recording in England.

Listen to Illusion on the Origin Syn cd's if you want an idea of how good these guys are. They've got something very special about them, something different, dare I say, original. Yeah, the Nardelli vocals have a lot to do with it.

I've got that, Illusion is the best non-Yes track I've heard in some time. They come from the 60's and yet there's something very new and original about their sound. I predict they're going to be a very big band, particuarly with Chris in the line-up.

Illusion is a fantastic track...WOW!

I just checked out the Syn site. The new band photos are incredible, so strong. What a great image and feeling they depict. They really make you want to listen to their music. When you get to hear the music, it's frigging great! These guys are catapulting upwards! Whoever is behind them is some kind of image making genius. This is a like a new lease of life for Chris, he's looking fantastic!

Soon to be made public:
This morning, Chris and Stephen Nardelli did a fantastic telephone interview with Don Cassidy of Delicious Agony Progressive Rock Radio, to be aired during the Second Annual YES Holiday Marathon:
Sunday, Dec. 26th, 12 noon Eastern Time to
Wednesday, Dec. 29, 12 noon Eastern Time.
http://www.deliciousagony.com
It is my understanding that the new updated version of "Grounded" will be aired during the marathon as well. It is a new 5-minute revision of the classic tune, recently completed by The Syn in the studio. This new track will be on their next CD release, so this will be a nice little preview of things to come. (smiles)
More details will be forthcoming in the next YesServices Newsletter, which will be posted on Tuesday.
Keep smiling!

"Blighty"? (grins) Where's that?
12 noon Eastern Time is the same as 1700 hours London Time, or 5:00 p.m.
Who is the new Syn guitarist to replace Pete Banks?
All will soon be revealed. Patience! (smiles) That information should be announced within the next six to eight weeks. Details are still being settled.
Have a great day!

Having had a good listen to Illusion, my question is do you think Steve Nardelli should join Yes? He's got the voice quality to make the perfect replacement for Jon if he ever decides to call it a day. In the meantime, the Syn will do for me in 2005. It's hard to believe that these guys can come together after 30 or so years and play music like this. Amazing!

The plan all along was to get Chris to do the bass parts, Steve Gee only put down the parts in hopes Chris would come on board when he had free time.
