Hi there,
I am Peter Dervin and I host a weekly radio program called EXPOSURE on 90.7 KSER (www.kser.org) in Everett, WA every Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm PST.
On December 17th, Alan White will be my special guest for the evening. Alan will be bringing in some of his favorite music and we will discuss his career with YES and others, including John Lennon & George Harrison.
I'd like to hear from you, the fans, what questions you might have for Alan. I think it would fantastic to be able to share your thoughts and questions.
Please email me at: peter.dervin@verizon.net with your questions, or post them here. I need your name and the city, state you are from.
Check out my web page at: http://www.kser.org/shows/exposure/exposure.html for more information about my radio program.
Thanks in advance for your input.
Cheers!

Question -
YES recorded some new music for the US release of the 35th Anniversary compilation. Can you explain the direction the music has taken and will any future recordings follow this trend ?

Okay, make a liar out of me everyone!!
Judy'sTrevor, SWIB and I were in the chat room Saturday when in comes Exposure, aka Peter. We told him how he NEEDED to post this question for us YesFans because we are so insightful and will blow White's doors off. So, where are the great questions? Exposure wants to expose fans to the fresh, cutting edge, new vibes and is hoping Alan brings in some of his other past works for a show and tell kind of dialog. But Exposure really wants to find out what's Alan listening to and focusing on now. Where are all your onward, forward thinking thoughts?
I have none, I would run if I recognized any of the YesMen. (Do you believe me?) I just want another sound painting. Think you can do that for me Alan? And thanks Soul Dreamer!
Who's next?

This is wat I have e-mailed to Peter:
As a long time Yesfan I have a question for Alan White, mind you that it is a bit of a critical question, but those questions can make for an interesting interview I think:
Alan, you have been with the band for 30 years, being on every Yes studio album recorded since Tales from Topographic Oceans. Yes has been around for 35 years now. Shouldn’t a Yes concert be more representative for all those 35 years of Yes, instead of almost merely concentrating on the 70’s music as has been the case on the last tours. If it were up to you personally, would you like to play more 80’s and 90’s stuff on a next tour?
By the way, is there anyone that is able to record the interview and then maybe post it on this site. Being from the Netherlands, I won't be able to tune on to the radio station......

Hi Peter!!
Here is a question for Alan. Before Yes, Alan had the opportunity to play with John Lennon. What is the whole story?

How are you able to consistently get that bell to ring out at the beginning of the trance section of Awaken? All the recordings I have heard it always sounds the same, as it should, but how?

Excellent question Mr. Holland. I want to know the answer to that!
(Mind Drive, That, That is)
Question - Alan, on YesFans many of us discussed the moment we found out about John Lennon in 1980. It is a very vivid memory to me. Do you remember that moment and could share it with us?

OOO I like this! I love the questions above
Ask him if he enjoyed his Curry in Nottingham during the Full Circle Tour! Where did he eat the best curry??
C'mon, it can't all be serious, he's a fun guy (and I don't mean he's part of the mushroom family, fungi, gedit?!)

It would be fascinating if Alan could talk a little bit about the 'XYZ' sessions in '81 that also featured Chris & Jimmy Page.
Alan was quoted as saying in an interview a while back that he has about 8 or 9 demos from these sessions. It'd be great if he could talk about them and whether there would ever be a realistic chance they'd see the light of day.

Good question Glendo. That NEEDS to be answered and it opens the door for many questions.
And really, this is just a bump. You do realize the interview is TOMORROW, Wednesday?

Hi, Alan.
You guys left a stage clothes outfit in a hotel in Minneapolis in 1979. Do you need it back, or can I wear it? Just let me know if you want to pick it up.

Oh come on Paul! I know you have a serious question. Probably too serious, like what measure is the key change and is it on a pick up or a down beat or is it eighth notes with fifth chords, or some other jargon most of us wanna bees wish we new the lingo to.
Hi, Alan.
At the start of the middle up-tempo section of Gates of Delerium, Peggy and I have noticed that the steady eighth notes (played alternating ride/hat/ride/hat cymbals) have become less emphasized. You tend to emphasize the triplet feel but don't carry the steady eighth notes on the ride as prominently as the original recording. I liked how the ride cymbal and the bass guitar's double strokes gave that section the real up-tempo drive. Any comment? Plus, my drummer can't play it well, so care to sit in?

Okay, I'm pissed in the chat room and everyone else gave up. We cannot tune in!
So,
BITE ME!
There, ANGER all gone, I feel better now.
Babye.
It was a pretty good interview. The Internet feed did not work. I called (all local calls) the Web maintenance phone and it was disconnected (not good).
So, only the broadcast could be heard. The 6000W station has a limited range, so my car and a short drive was the only way to hear it.
Alan brought a laptop and was playing various music files as he was the guest DJ.
John Lennon heard him in a club one night and called Alan the next day. "Come to Toronto tomorrow and jam". That's how it all started with Lennon.
They have been discussing the setlist for the next tour. It really comes down to what each and all members like (it's really difficult, as a musician, to play things that you don't like. Anything is better done by someone who likes it.) Simple enough.
He plays and tunes his drums every day. I wish more musicians had this ethic.
He answered Peggy's question (and he said "Hi, Peggy"!!!) and cut to the chase. Jan. 27 is when the new discs come out. Touring starts in the US (May), then Europe, and then back to the US.
Total Mass, he had curry across the street from the venue. He lost his cellphone there, too.
Bluetailfly - the consistent bell is due to skill! Oh, and it's tuned percussion, so it's the same cymbal.
He didn't answer mine (sniff). So, I paraphrased a bit, but I couldn't record it in my car.

Here's a question:
"Did John Lennon ever mention whether he enjoyed YES or not? Beyond platitudes, was there a certain Yessong that he mentioned as a favorite?"
Lennon would have LOVED YES, I would think.
...Right down his alley, if you ask me.

Alright! Cheap thrill for the day. Alan said hi to me. Oh wait, Paul's probably pulling my leg.
OMG, that was not my question. Alan took the easy way out. I know...I think I know the 35th Anniversary is coming out Jan 27, ok, five new tracks, but I want to know when the next theme cd will be around. Cheater, oh I mean, a gentlewomen says what she means, and means what she says. My error. He did answer the question. That is when the next new cd is coming out. Words: so inadequate.
I wonder what Ron Drummond was doing last night...not really, I just wonder if he might have taped it!
Thanks Paul!

Hi folks,
It has come to my attention that the live stream from KSER (couresty of Heraldnet.com) crapped out. I don't know why this happen. I am looking into this. My sincere apologies.
I did record the entire show on mini-disc, which I will transfer into an audio file (either Windows Media Player or Real Player) and it will be posted on my web page and on Alan's web page in the near future.
I will be posting pictures taken during the interview on my web page by this weekend at:http://www.kser.org/shows/exposure/exposure.html
Thanks for tuning in. I was great fun.

Paul thanks for the report on the interview. I am psyched that my question got answered - and I think the skill must be emphasized. I bet I couldnt make the same cymbal sound exactly the same every time
