View Full Version : What is the best Rabin era album?

From "what is/are the best Rabin era song(s)?" it is just one stepo further to this question. I'm really interested in how this one will turn out!

For me personally the best album is "Talk". Some wonderdull songwriting, producing and playing on that album. I also think it is the most coherent album that this line-up had done.

The production on both 90125 & Talk are really coolness. I'd have a hard time picking between the two, but if push comes to shove....I really like Talk's diversity.

90125 by a long shot. I liked it from when I first bought it - different from 70s Yes but fresh, energetic and great vocal harmonies. Very well produced - I like Trevor Horn's work.

I voted for 90125. That's the album that made me discover Yes. I was impressed by the vocal harmonies and the production too. Not a weak tune on this album...

I actually voted for Big Generator. The production is not the best, but I like it (edit - the album, not the production!) overall just slightly more than the others. I'm probably the only one to think this way (I obviously am so far!).

Nope. I like BG best too. Far and away my favorite Rabin-era album. It's the most Yes-like to these ears. I like the songwriting a lot, and I think Jon's influence on the music is stronger here than on the other two.

Well, you should talk to Petercologne. He's probably the biggest defender of that album on this site and it is one of his all time favorite Yes albums if not the favorite!

From what I understood, if it comes to songwriting Talk is the album were Jon's influence was the biggest of the three albums.
Trevor Rabin said in his NFTE interview:

"But essentially from my point of view, and I think from Jon’s point of view, it was an important album because it was really the first time we really got together and wrote together in a real way. Up until then, I’d written and then he’d come on top of it, even though there were collaborations."

That's interesting - on my reissued Talk CD Alan White states that it was basically a Trevor Rabin album.

I voted for 90125 - it is more consistant than the others. Talk has excellent production but combines some excellent song with some not-so-good stuff.

I will never really appreciate BG until I remix it as the production is just awful and really ruins my enjoyment of this album.

Poor Trevor, this guy always comes across to fans of Yes, like their counterparts take on Phil Collins, both are much magligned, but are gifted musicians, I do not solely blame either one for the so-called cheesy music direction the bands would follow in the Eighties,.

I rather enjoy Trevor Rabin' s guitar work and his songwriting.

Of all the albums from what is listed, "Talk" was very underated, but "90125" is my favorite.

Was the 80's really CHEESY or just the way music ended going too? Would the 70's Yes and Genesis sounds have went over well with the 80's, a time when a lot of things in music changed. I look back and embrace the changes. Hell, both bands could have fell to the way side if they had not adapted.

It's a tough choice. Before I had listened to the BG demos/concert, I would say Talk. But I have really got back into BG in a big way now, especially listening to Shoot High...what a song, along with Final Eyes and ROL. Maybe if I listen to 90214 then 90215 will grab my top spot. I'm going with BG.

90125 gets my vote, though Talk has some fine points to it too. Never really grooved to the whole of BG and while it has moments, it misfires for me.

Of these 3 tours I only got to see YES on 90125. And, no, that hasn't really colored my opinion of the album.

I voted for Talk. And to be honest, the album didn’t really click for me until I saw them play it live. At the two Talk shows I saw, they played every song from the album except “State of Play.” The Talk songs translated extremely well to the stage, with the obvious highlight being “Endless Dream.”

But I thought Talk had the most cohesive, "Yes" feel to it of the three Rabin albums.

My favorite by far is TALK. It's a cohesive album with plenty of fine tracks, showing Trevor Rabin could write more progressive tracks. Even so, I think some songs are a bit overlong (Real Love and I Am Waiting).

And... ENDLESS DREAM RULES!!! :)

I enjoy all the Rabin era albums, but Talk has to be the best album for me since its got the fantastic Endless Dream on it and the rest of the songs have a certain touch to them I find; so hard and moving with awesome sound quality. I think Rabin did a fantastic job on this album, and its a fitting way to end his time in Yes.

I went with Talk, because I think it's the most consistently brilliant interplay of Jon Anderson and Trevor Rabin, even though it's lacking some in the classic Chris bass sound.

Just an interesting note though. I noticed after I voted that BG got hardly any votes at all!! That would easily be my second choice, and briefly flashed in my mind for first if it weren't for some of the inconsistencies. There's some mind numbingly excellent stuff on that album like SHAL and Final Eyes. I'm always amazed at how much our tastes vary as a group of fans. It's doubtless because Yes has so much variety in their music and has attracted so many different kinds of fans over the years.

Big Generator is a fabulous album. I don't think there is a truly weak track on it. The best of 90125 and Talk may beat it, but both of them have weak points and, at least as far as I'm concerned, the whole album is good. I saw Yes on this tour for the first time and was thankful that, in 1987, someone had the decency to actually do a good album. As far as that goes, it was pretty much the Dead's In the Dark and Big Generator. The 80's were not a good time musically, but Yes continued to do good stuff.

Im Running...cool bass line

True story. I was living with a friend of mine at his family's house in 1987 when BG came out. We played in different bands, as my friend was into heavy metal and I was a DeadHead, but we hung out during the day practicing together most days.

When BG came out, I was turning anyone I could corner on to it. It gets to I'm Running, and my friends uncle knocks on the door about a minute into it. He says to me "John, was that just you playing the bass? I knew you were pretty good, but that bass playing I just heard was unbelieveable. Oh, you guys have an album on. Was that you or the album?" I told him it was Chris Squire, and that in my wildest imagination I wasn't going to be that good, which wasn't a knock on myself because the vast majority of people who played bass weren't going to be that good.

This guy had never heard of Yes, but was quite impressed with Chris' line on I'm Running.

Personally its the Rabin songs that shine more so than any particular album. There are certain tracks of all of the Rabin albums I love but I can't say I am too fond of any of the albums as a whole.

Owner, leave it, Changes...love will find a way, I'm Running..... Lift me up, Saving my heart, miracle of life....the calling, state of play, walls.

These are my favourite yes songs of the Rabin era. Put together on one album it would probably be one of my most treasured cd's in my Yes collection.

This is a difficult question because I like 90125, Big Generator, and Talk equally well. However, if I had to choose one album, it would be Big Generator. My favourite tracks from that album are "Shoot High Aim Low", "Love Will Find A Way", "Final Eyes", and "I'm Running".

I can see how people can say 90125 is their favourite album from the Trevor Rabin era. Even though it has been seriously overplayed over the years, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" is still a tremendous song. "Hold On","Changes" and "Cinema" are great songs too.

It is also not hard to see why some people favour the Talk album. It contains what may be Trevor Rabin's masterpiece, "Endless Dream". It's an outstanding song. I also like "The Calling", "Walls" and "Where Will You Be" from that album.

Well the Rabin era Yes was great music. And it was Yes, if in an augmented form.

I got into Yes in the 70's, but I love a lot of the Rabin era material as much as anything, especially Talk, which, for me, is as good as almost anything Yes has ever done. Different, yes, because it was recorded in 1993 and not 1974. But still great.

You know, it's only what I like or dislike....and when it comes to Yes, I'm probably just spoiled....expecting CTTE's and Relayer's to come bouncing back at me when I spin a Yes album. Certain albums grab me right away. Talk, The Ladder, Keystudio....grabbed me right away. I didn't have to TRY to like them. I liked them immediately. I do like Shoot High Aim Low and Rhythm of Love was fun in concert, but the album as a whole, took a lot of effort to listen to. Same with Union. That's just not what I expect when I put Yes on. The Dead never needed to change. I don't think Yes did. Anyway, the argument is moot. They did change. For the better or worse hmmmmmm...... that is the question.

I disagree with that statement and I’ll tell you why.

The Grateful Dead changed constantly and that kept them fresh. They rarely played a song in consecutive nights and never was a song played exactly the same way twice. There's no way a dead fan can compare the music they were producing in the late 90's to the late 60's and say they didn't change.

Yes music is far more structured and needs attention to detail. The songs are not mere jamming vehicles for the members in the magnitude that Dead songs are. So there is a limitation there that may cause some staleness with the members. I feel that, along with the tremendous personalities in the band led to the different breakups over the years.

Yes is more of a commercial band than the Grateful Dead. I usually hate to use that statement because it paints too broad a brushstroke. Obviously both bands wanted to sell records. But Yes is in this sense a bit more concerned with record sales than the Dead.

Are they the most commercial band ever? Obviously they're not. But you must consider that early on, the Dead had no use for the studio and toured almost constantly.

Please don’t look at this statement as being a shot at Yes, because it’s not. I love both bands and enjoy the inspiration both have given me over the years.

To answer the topic question after veering off to this tangent, I feel ‘Talk’ is the best Yes album from the Rabin era.

The thing is, those classic Yes albums of the 70's will never be duplicated. For me, they almost did it with Talk, and Keys was great as well. But I don't expect another Tales or Relayer from them. If they do it, great. I just want something new and groundbreaking and memorable. But if they never record another thing, I'll be forever grateful for what they've done.

All that said, I still would like to see Rabin back. With Steve.

Mind you, Changes, Hearts, City of Love, It Can Happen, Hold On.... they're all good toons.

Wow I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention them all in one sentence and actually liking them.

I feel faint!

Oh and by the way......I LOVE BIG GENERATOR!

(Except for the song "I'm Running". Get it away from me.)

talk but not by much: these albums are all VERY good and very interesting and very solid. i just love endless dream a lot, so talk gets the nudge. plus 90125 has city of love.

Big Generator. It's the most sophisticated album of the Rabin-era. It doesn't show at all that it was so very difficult to get this album recorded and produced... :headset:

What's wrong with Almost Like Love? I like this Yes-goes-soul experiment.
It sounds like they had a lot of fun doing it.
Trevor And Steve? What universe would that be in?:headset:

90125. An outstanding masterpiece from start to finish. Owner of a Lonely Heart is what brought me to Yes. Changes is truely moving. But, the a capella section of Leave It still sends chills down my spine.

That being said, delete Holy Lamb from Big Generator and we've got a competition. I'm Running is a true music masterpiece.
