Well, pull up a chair & grab a glass of your favorite beverage ( & you might want to hit the bathroom before you start reading this) 'cause this might take a while.
Yesterday, Swib, Sisterbluebird,Starrship (yes he DID make it!) & myself attended the Godspell play with our own Dantalion rides again (Kevin) in the leading role.
Simply put- it was WONDERFUL! These folks did such a fantastic job with this play.
For those not familiar with the play, it was made in the early 70's & what it is is a "modernized" version of the story of the life of Christ. Lots of humor, fantastic music & very colorful costumes. A brief history of the making of the play was given before the show, which was neat. I learned some things i hadn't known such as the bright colors of the costumes being based on a chapter of a book (can't remember the name) & not inspired by the psychedelic movement of the times.
Swib & i rode down together & met up with sisterbluebird, & (to our great surprise) starrship trooper in the church parking lot. Afetr some hugs & chit chat, we decided it'ld be a good idea to go in & get our tickets & seats.
The play was done in an intimate Episcapalian(sp.?) church setting, with a crowd of approx. 100 people ranging in age from 2-80 ish. I knew i was in for a ride at the beginning of the play when the man playing john the baptist (& later judas iscariot) walked down the aisle singing "Prepare ye the way of the Lord"- he was just booming it out & i had goosebumps big time.
EVERY member of the cast had wonderful singing voices- it's really hard to single out one persons voice 'cause they all sounded so good!!!
Anyway, the play procceded & these folks were just wonderful ( i said that already didn't i??). The humor was great- i laughed a lot. The facial expressions of all the cast were just right- animated but not overdone for the play, & our man Kevin played his role so,so good. There was one girl in the cast who i would guess has done some gymnastics, based on some of the "moves" she did- just amazing, especially when you consider the tight quarters of doing the play in a church sanctuary! These folks did a phenominal job of utilizing all the open space available.
Another neat highlight for me was watching some of the audience. On our right was a group of special needs people & there was a woman with them who was communicating the play to them using sign language. She was wonderful! You could see that she was into the play & having a great time doing what she was doing, dancing & moving to the music. It was absolutely captivating to me to watch her- she did such a great job it was almost like watching another cast member!
Now before i go any further, i want to catagorically set the record straight!! Contrary to what you may read in any future postings I did not, AT ANY TIME, pinch Starrship trooper, thereby causing :crybby: !!!!! The play & the cast bear full responsibility for that!!
Truth is we were ALL moved to tears. Myself on 3 different occassions. As Swib said- during the final scene- "there wasn't a dry eye in the house". For me what got me 1st was the song "By my side" (i'm getting goosebumps right now just writting about it). It was sung as a duet & these women did such a beautiful job with it- words don't suffice. They just don't. Also, the scene where Jesus is saying goodbye to each disciple- again words do not suffice.
And then of course the final scene. It took every ounce of restraint i had to keep from breaking into a full, from the gut crying. That's how powerful it was for me. Perhaps the final scene is best surmised by what sisterbluebird & swib heard a child in the audience ask his/her parent- "is he really dead"?
Whew.
Anyway, so after- we said hi to Kevin, got a hug & a picture & then went to get some chow at a chinese restaraunt. ( and yes kevin, once again we had more $ given that was needed to cover the bill & tip!!), & went on our contented ways. Also made preliminary plans to all get together for Jons solo show & the eagerly awaited 2004 tour- cant' wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Peace, bill
