View Full Version : yes fans jam
I was just running this by upbgirl.
Howe does this sound.
Get yesfans who are musicians to jam for a weekend and record it?
Of course would be after the holidays, and maybe after the YES tour.
What do you think?
Let me know.

a good idea, I've had the same idea...but who? where? what? how?

england would be the next gig, i think.. [might try one in detroit this summer again-just a small one]
the problems being that some of us play by ear-some can only read music-some can do it all.. [but not me]
i believe a set list needs to be discussed as well as who plays what instrument on which tune.-make sure all have a chance to shine on thier chosen song[s]..
this could get complicated..
but it would be groovy wouldnt it?
i wil think on it some more and see what i come up with.
all i know is i would never be able to just go up on a stage and wing it..[even after consuming mass quantities of liquor]
but i'd like to play one song at least..
sober this time, too.. lol!
this site is home to some amazing musicians.. i am making it my mission to try and collect all the original works of any who will send em..
[and some i will pay for]

I agree, Kathi . . . needs to be some organization there. I tried to get that happening at STARRSHIP's last month . . . it's not simple.
kevin,
you did a great job at starships house, I have to learn to get it going and block out the people physically and just get in my own euphoria.
I can play, but if I don't stay with it I start losing the concentration and then fall apart.
Started practicing again on me bass a bit. Got the yesfans chicago vid kev, can copy for you .

I have been interested in this idea for some time.
Another thought that crossed my mind is if Earl can get a full night at Kulak's. We could have various musicians get up and strut their stuff and then a jam at the end.

Here are some of the problems to overcome. We tried to get this to happen in Chicago with months of discussion and it didn't happen. Upbgirl reheased her duet before she reached Chicago and Earl played alone and I couldn't play or sing. A great show but no open jam. Many of the musicians in the planning stage never made it to Chicago. At the New England gathering we allso tried to plan a set list ahead of time. But it was short notice and my complications what we planed didn't work so well. But luck befell us when Dantalion rattled off a list of Neil Young songs he new And He hit one I new how to play, so I started playing and he joined in .Bingo a jam!
Problems : we live all over the world you need rehearsal time.
Equipment, take a guitar and suitcase on a plane takes effort what about amps, mics and stands, forget drums, keyboards?
Idealy: Rented amps and Pa at site. 3-4 days to practice together.
Then there's allso that luck factor.

If we did the next gathering here in LA, I'm sure I could book an entire night at Kulaks...
I would LOVE to do this: let's see if we can swing it, eh?
:ele:
I could do a weekend in CA, no problem, bring my bass with me, hopefully have an amp there for me to tweek with, if not would have to ship my huge one out to CA, that is a dollar or two.
email everyone a setlist, get everyone together for a day to rehearse and then go nutty that night.

So, who in this group is a drummer that can handle time signature changes????

yes-right on starrship.. nobody should go up onstage unprepared, in MY opinion..[not much 'ad lib solo' in this girl, i'm afraid-by the book or nothing for me.. bah humbug]
and yes, glenn and i did rehearse way before we arrived in the windy city.. i could have it no other way.. [it HAD been a long time, you see]
and i gotta say, harry-when i realized it was YOU playing [and not kev or your son] i busted out crying, man! i am so happy you jumped on that, dude-i KNOW what that must have meant to ya..a WONDERFUL moment..
this could be done, folks, but from MY experience, [limited as it is] people want to jump on it, but dont seem to want to put in the time to make it really happen.. we had LOTS of musicians supposedly coming to chitown, but only a couple showed up for real..
possibly after a date/venue is set up, it could happen. my suggestion would be to start fiddling around with music at home-see what feels natural, and after time is set, then, get busy planning something concrete.. a few numbers well-rehearsed is mandatory, and then, see if a 'jam' happens after..
Drummers wanted: I know of one drummer who knows alans work, I saw him play a few years ago in NH, a bunch of musicians who are diehard yes fans knew a lot of their songs, they played the ritual twice, they recorded it but I guess it came out awful, I wish I knew who the names were again, they played all day and well into the night, it was a great time.
I am sure if we put some good energy into this we could put a post on NFTE some month and see if we can get ideas and more musicians.
Whaddya say YES FAMILY???? Can we do this???
you guys are sooo old fashioned haha
you know this can be done on the net, right?
zenpool's guitarist steve hall live's in newcastle-upon-
tyne england, i live in seattle.
we exchange uncompressed .wav files w/ an ftp service.
we're a little behind, yestalk.com has done this at least once,
"starship trooper" i believe.
it was o.k., except the vocals.
i'm betting the talent at yesfans could blow
them out of the water!
it's a simple matter to create a page
on an omd, post the music for yesfans.
it's easier than traveling cross country-
(good luck w/that! haha)
let me know what you think,
i you'd like to hear my keys, strings-

Gee Kathi I seem to be making you cry a lot lately. Stiffen up your lip and just picture me laughing with you . Yes I did start and play The Needle and the Damage Done, and if you listen closely you'll here Dantalions guittar in there too each of us adding slight off accents. Me doing some hard biteing notes and kevin some smooth coloration over them. I played it about 3 times to make a distiction on who was playing what. Plus Kevin did most of the vocals.
Please no more tears.

i'm sorry, i didn't mean to be harsh,
just a "spirit of friendly competition" thing...
... but yeah...haha
they seem to need to focus on their 2nd tune,
a long time in planning now...
maybe a challenge is what they need?...

This in itself is not a bad Idea, but it could never have the energy of a truly LIVE jam session. I will be at any Jam that i could possibly get to. If it's gonna be in California, then try for it to be in June or July....I can't guarantee that I would be there, but that would give me the best chance to make it. BTW Tim4003 and I are trying to get something going with a drummer friend of mine here in GA....I'll let you know how it goes:)

Well, I'm a bassist too, so how about all us bassist doing "The Fish" with each of us taking one of the recorded parts off of 'Fragile' ?
awesome! i don't see why everyone would have to
concentrate on a single tune.
if there's a guitarist that wants to knock out
"mood.."or "clap", i'd love to hear it!
i'd love to be involved w/ a live yesjam,
but my rig would be very expensive to ship.
(think wakeman size).
i have to agree w/ kathi, i'm a "precision person" also.
maybe we should move the "v-jam" idea
to a seperate thread?
I play guitar and I think it would be very fun to get together with some fellow musicians and jam, but I don't think my parents would be to big on letting me travel to L.A. or wherever this meeting is going to be. If you do record a cd I would like a copy.
and speaking of making cds, me and my band "the checkmates" just finished our 3rd cd. If you want any of them I will give you any of the 3 for free. we are only 14/15 years old but I think you'll like it. Heres my E-mail.

This would be great if it could happen. If it were held at Kulaks, I could provide 5 or 6 amps, and other mikes, mixers or instruments as needed. I'm even open to recording everything on 8 track digital so maybe someone in another place can overlay or alternate parts with some of the music recorded.
I just got a new acoustic/electric 12 string so I could correctly play "And you and I". I'd love to have the chance to use it. So Kirk, if Earl doesn't take it I'd be happy to do the acoustic there.

The possibilities of playing Yes without alot of rehearsal sounds a bit daunting. I play Howe's accoustic stuff and I know that it is all I can do to keep up with myself let alone playing with others in an impromtu jam.
However, here's a thought, most of the members are musicians with some computer experience. What if we try to share tracks using Cakewalk or Acid Pro. It would allow everyone to share their differing styles with one another and provide the foundation for a jam when and wherever it happens.
What would be really cool is to have a bassist or rhythym guitarist lay down some original stuff. It shouldn't be too complex at first. Something in 4/4 laid down with a drum machine (if a drummer is not available.) Then the guitarist/horn player, etc. take it and add their own chops to it. It would be interesting to see how the lead would be interpreted by musicians working independently of one another.
I've got a rhythym file that I will share with anyone who is interested. It is a Cakewalk file based on a Genesis progression (Back in NYC., key of G).
I will get this thing started if anyone is interested.

Tim4003 and myself got together last Sunday with a drummer friend of mine & jammed for about 3 hrs. We came up with a 5 minute or so medley that included the intro from YIND, a verse of Roundabout and ended with Wurm....we plan on getting together again sometime soon to try to polish it up. When we are happy with it, we will make an MP3 available. Any other YesFan musicians near Atlanta who might want to join us, send me a PM. This is not intended to be a formal band, just an occasional thing....
ridvan- (do you go by "rudivan" elsewhere, or is it a coincidence of a similar name?)
sorry i missed your post until now.
i've been buried w/ "zenpool related activities";-)
sounds good!
attic- sounds like a great happy medium between the 2 suggestions. that way, if the live jam fails to
materialize.....
i use both sonar 3 producer and acid pro4 /
soundforge 7, cd architect.....
let's get a concensus on preference and have a go at it.

I want to keep the Kulak's idea alive. For one thing, we could have it braodcast on the internet so those that could not make it could watch it!
I am a good drummer and given a list of songs I could learn them easily enough. I could also handle keys or bass. I can't really sing well or play guitar like Mr Howe though.

Kirk,
I've always been Ridvan. As for the topic; I really like these ideas. Using the Cakewalk setup might be the easiest way. It's fairly common, and easy to pass a copy to whoever might need one. Easy to learn for some that might want to contribute that haven't done digital before.
As for pulling this thing off................Here's a few ideas to get the ball rolling.
As a starting point and hopefully to give us some rhythm tracks, we have an open jam at Kulaks. In addition, other musicians submit recordings in the proper format that they want to offer for others to jam to. All songs to be recorded in the original key to make things simple for all involved.
These recordings are given a name (i.e. And You And I) and a track listing. and posted for musicians to download and jam with.
We need one or two producers to take the different offerings, sort through the mess and try to make something we can listen to.
We also need someone to coordinate the musicians. To see that the music files that someone wants to add to are sent and modified files are sent to the producers. To answer questions and if needed put musicans in touch with one another for specific questions on a song.
Allow perspective musicians to aquire recording software.
Perhaps if each one involved made a contribution here at Yesfans, we might get Tim to let us use Yesfans and we'll post the song links here.
Any opinions? Any ideas? I say we ask Earl to start getting us a few dates to work with and we get going. This would be so cool to do just before the new tour. And I really think all the Yesfans would get a big kick out of it.

I like these ideas.
If we have more than enough musicians then we could separate into groups. That way the number of songs that one might work on would be small.
Glendo
ridvan- so, you're saying do the jam at kulak's, and then others add tracks via computer? hmmm....
the only thing that may be a chore(speaking as a
producer) is making live ambience work w/
recorded. occasionally a band does overdubs on live recordings,
but it's very subtle. the end product of combining the two
would be unusual to say the least.
i dunno- this may be two diffent ideas/discussions.
my thought,(which riff and i brought up months ago)
was to do a computer collaboration like the folks at yestalk.
i'm very familiar w/ c.c., all zenpool guitar tracks are
done in england by steve hall, assembled in seattle.
we have an FTP server we use to transfer uncompressed
.wavs.
the kulak's jam sounds like great fun, but there's no way
i can help w/ that one, other than post-production.
wot ya reckon, start a new thread?
as far as recorded keys-
my rig's on the "show us your instruments" thread.
