Of course it's all subjective, but for my money, this could be the greates electric bass solo in Rock History.

What do you think?

This period in the growth of YES was extremely exciting. The band was 'hot', they were still making their mark in the business; and they were hungry ! 'Yessongs' demonstrates their energy, their tightness and in the case of "The Fish', the beginning of an idea that would continue to grow for years to follow.
I too like this rendition.

Good thing you put "in rock history" in there...I was going to suggest a certain album by Jaco!

Love it! I think it's a grand solo. It has it all, versatility, volume, contrast, and fire! As far as it being the best goes, Yes!

I'd have to listen to it again as i haven't heard this version for many a year. But if it is better than the three solos I heard in Oz recently then I'd be very surpirsed.

It's a great version becaue Chris reaches out to the extremities more so than you'd hear on modern versions. And when i say that i mean as quiet as the grave at certain points, to the fff distorted chordal madness before the band reprise.

Just more trippy, more wild, more more more!!

This version has to be my most favorite of all the live versions..I can only imagine to have actually been at that particualr show; seeing The Man in action!!

I thought that version of 'The Fish' was the best bass solo ever........
Until The Word Is Live arrived in my CD player and I became familiar with 'It's Love.'
Chris improved on perfection with that one!

The finest bass solo ever will be his next one. The Fish from Yessongs is great and so is Whitefish from 9012Live. I like when Chris plays bits of Tempus Fugit or Soundchaser during his solo.

no it is not....sorry...i saw Stu Hamm play a 5 minute solo while touring with Joe Satriani that has never been touched by any other bassist.....Hamm played a 6 string bass and he sounded as fluent any guitarist i have heard....

As a professional bass player I take offence at the name Stu Hamm. He doesn't play bass, he taps, because he can't play bass- he's got no groove, rhythm or soul.

He's a guitarist with four strings and a gimmick.

Chris Squire on the other hand is a God. No extreme slaping or tapping in sight.

I will take his Fish work on the audio portion of Yesspeak. That version from that show is rather good. I like the addition of "on the silent wings of freedom" he used on that tour on The Fish!

I particularly like the way he broke apart the dozen or so tracks from the studio version and used them in the live version on Yessongs.

Anyone ever heard the bass solo from the extended version of "For Everyone"? Its pretty awesome.

In that same recording, what happened during that very quiet part? What does he do?

great solo for rock at the time--I just wish he would have done more to expand on it in later years--my fave is Jef Berlin for solos
