Anyone know why Drama was such a short album when the addition of "Go Through This" and "We Can Fly From Here" would have made wonderful additions which would have really rounded out the record? Where they under serious constraints to release something quickly??
Just curious...

I'm just guessing ...
but it does seem as though they were probably in a hurry to finish recording with their upcoming tour quickly approaching...
and Horn and Downes also had to learn the classic material in a short period of time.

We Can fly from here is fairly simple and seemed to be well rehearsed. It's a shame that didn't make it on. Go through this is more straight ahead rock n roll and maybe that wasn't consided Yessish enough at the time.

Hearing some boots from throughout the Drama tour it sounds like Yes were planning on putting these songs on a followup to Drama but Trever Horn was really bummed out and burned out after the tour and just backed out of the band.
"We Can Fly From Here" is sort of anthem type song. The words use a lot of aviation metaphors to say that we can rise above negative experiences and go on to a brighter future. Lots of dynamics changes, sort of falls between "Into the Lens" (riffs repeated at different intensities and tempos) and "Run Through The Light".
"Go Through This" is a hard rocker. Think "Going for the One" meets "Tempus Fugit." On live versions Steve really shines out, probably some of his heaviest hardest playing since Relayer. The studio backing track on the Drama remaster is a bit more subdued but you still get a basic idea of where it was going. Just like "Tempus Fugit" the lyrics are given rapid fire delivery.

We Can Fly was a great song from the bootleg I've heard. That woulda sounded really good in the studio I'm sure.

I have recently acquired not only 1 but 2 versions of a studio recording of 'We Can Fly From Here' . This I think was downloaded from Dime and passed on to me by someone else here (thanks again Bruce!).
On the live boots that I have Trevor Horn always states that although this was the first song the Drama line up wrote together they never actually recorded it. We now know that was not the case. So, when did they record it and why was it not released on the latest Drama remaster with extra tracks ? It's a good song so this is all a bit of a mystery..
Anyone know anymore about the origins of this song ?

When you hear the original demo (available at dime) of We can fly from here
you realise what a lovely song it actually is,
it sounds totally different from the live version, and when you hear the
version performed later in the tour, when yes hit the U.K. it has more keyboards in it,which gives it another feel altogether.
the demo dates from May 1980 so with putting Drama together,a tour to start in August and mixing Yesshows, whats that latin phrase i'm looking for,oh yes

I think they were saving those songs for the next album. Fly From Here is a very strong piece.

Drama was probably a rushed album for at least a couple of reasons: Atlantic likely wanted product prior to Christmas 1980 (especially after the collapse of the Paris sessions the previous year) and there was a need to get material out before the late autumn tour.
The album clocked in at substantially less than 40 minutes when released, so a couple of more tracks could have made it on there. My guess is that both songs, though liked by the band, required quite a bit of polish and overdubbing which could not be accomplished given the time restraints. I really wish that they could have been finished, especially 'Fly From Here' which I thought could have been a very strong studio track.

both songs should have gone on the original record
we can fly from here was the song that horn & downes wrote for YES before they knew they were in YES
maybe the other guys in YES did not like them enough to be included

I agree, it would be great if they played 'We Can Fly From Here' on the upcoming tour - although I expect most people wouldn't remember the song...

The remastered and expanded release of Drama does have an instrumental version of "Go Through This" titled "Have We Really Got To Go Through This" on it. The Word Is Live boxset has live versions of "Go Through This" and "We Can Fly From Here".

Drama was probably a rushed album for at least a couple of reasons:
Actually I believe it's because the tour was booked (and largely sold out) way in advance, before the album was even recorded. They needed an album, quickly.
Also, I believe Bill Bruford (?!) plays drums on at least one of the demos of Fly From Here. That's probably when Alan was still recouping from breaking his foot.

We Can Fly From Here
Along the edge of this airfield
The old prop-shaft airliners stand
Altimeters reading zero
Formless memories lingering
Nights are cold on this airfield
I sit alone watching radar
Locked on your wavelength
Caught in the field
Falling slowly into the screen
Every day that you waste is one more that you've lost
When you wake up
I see you here
On display in lights
The final point of no return
Taking us there from here
And we can fly from here
Into a sky so clear
Look back
We'll dry the tears
For those once held so dear
In love we'll never disappear

This is the first I've heard of this story. Bruford back in the "mix"???
Agree final studio versions obviously are out there. Why not have added them to the re-release of Drama.

Yeah it's a shame We Can Fly was not included in the Drama remaster. It really is a great song which deserves wider circulation. So...
If anyone would like a copy of the 2 demo tracks that I have, I can share them via www.yousendit.com.
Just sign up and download the 'lite' version of the program (it's quick, free and easy)
Pm me your email address and say which file types you would prefer (flac,mp3 or wav ready for burning to cd)
Fingers crossed this should work.
Thanks to Bruce for sending me the original cd! :beerchugr:

Bill Bruford did NOT play on the demo of "We Can Fly From Here". That legend has been around for years, and I cannot remember the source of it, but it is false.
The drummer was a man called paul Robinson who had worked on recordings like "Video Killed the Radio Star" with Horn and Downes in The Buggles. The rumour itself was quashed by Geoff Downes in an interview in "Notes from the Edge" number 296 in 2005.

The source I have seen is Chris Welch's book 'Close To The Edge - The Story Of Yes'

Although I'm sure it was around for years even before that. I've never seen any corroboration whatsoever that bruford had anything to do with the Drama version of Yes, other than a statement by him in an interview that he saw them live and thought they did a very good imitation of Yes, but were simply not authentic.

I think they could have included both tracks as it is a very short studio album.
It's possible that they were holding them back for the follow up to Drama.
Shame that it never happened.
In an interview/review that I have somewhere (in the loft I think) at the time of Yes's stint at Madison Square Gardens in 1980, Trevor Horn said that he was working on some lyrical ideas for the follow-up album based on the book 'Vermillion Sands' by J.G. Ballard.
'Vermillion Sands' - That would have been a great title for an album.

Check the link on Yesworld re the re release of Buggles 'Adventures In Modern Recording' It includes two demos of We Can Fly From Here and there's a short clip to listen to.
I guess this is our answer as why it was never included on the Drama remaster; it was not considered as a Yes track but rather Buggles track..
