On Yessongs, I think Yours Is No Disgrace has an edit from the improv part to the actual song, since it's a rather abrupt change. Either that, or they're really together? Does anyone know exactly?

I think I'd opt for the latter. Since they have to have these pieces down flat for performing purposes, it seems logical to me that they'd rehearse until they've got it nailed before embarking on a tour, so I think that little intro on YIND was just a lottle special something Steve and Rick worked up. Everyone knew when to come in.

The improvised intro to YIND and the way the band works up to the start of the song is proof to me (IMHO) of their musicianship. BTW, Yessongs is the album that hooked me on Yes. I still consider the versions of songs like HOTS to be the "definitive" versions, since, as live versions, they don't have overdubs.

I always figured it was one of those things where the guys are onstage wailing, but they know approximately where Steve tends to end it each night, if not exactly. What we can't see is the look or nod or other gesture that tells the others "right here" - we only hear the result. Yes, it's an abrupt change, but it doesn't sound edited to me; it sounds like a really tight band pulling off a change.

I've wondered that before, but never came to a conclusion myself. I'll check it out again.
However, I've noticed a similar jump from the "shave and a haircut" joke/tune up sounds before Perpetual Change and that song's intro proper. I'm definite that that one is an edit.
Remember, yessongs was recorded over the course of several shows, so some editing for the best overall "show" on vinyl is understandable. The Allmans' "Live at the Fillmore East" was made like this, with the band choosing
their favorite cuts from a weekend of shows.
