I just bought the GFTO reissue. Forgive me if this has already been posted, but Turn of the Century turns into Chris Squire's Silently Falling halfway through. Since Silently falling was recorded some time in 1975, is this version of TOTC from that period aswell, or is it really a GFTO rehearsal?

I'm thinking that the band was still working out the structure of TURN OF THE CENTURY and Chris tried to incorporate a theme from his solo album track into the song. Obviously someone else came up with the music for the middle bit on the final version, as Chris isn't credited as composer. I think this track is from the GFTO sessions, in spite of the fact that SILENTLY FALLING had already been released at the time. It's not unusual for songwriters to recycle musical themes. Note that there is a riff from the intro to THE PROPHET in THE FISH.

There are several Close To The Edge references on Tales as well, the latest being the extended intro to RSOG. Does it sound like it to you?

You can hear a theme from CTTE in Steve's guitar solo a few minutes into RITUAL. Frank Zappa called this sort of thing CONCEPTUAL CONTINUITY and many many composers have done it.
But back to GFTO...I did try to find the moments on the YESYEARS 'VEVEY' tracks within VEVEY (REVISITED) and obviously we still only have a small piece of the puzzle. VEVEY PT.1, VEVEY PT.2 and VEVEY (REVISITED) are all from different moments of the still unreleased longer piece.

There's another example of "Conceptual Continuity" between CTTE & TFTO...At 5:11 into The Ancient, Steve slips in the recurring riff from Siberian Khatru.
