View Full Version : GOING FOR THE ONE on Rhino

This was the first Yes album I ever owned, and just like all the other Rhino YES releases, this remastered and expanded GFTO sounds better than ever. Anyone boycotting these is truly missing out on the best sounding YES cd's yet. The only thing better would be SACD and DVD-A 5.1, which hopefully will be in the future as more people get this sort of equipment. Since I can't play DVD-A in my Sony Discman, these Rhinofied versions of the YES albums will make my morning walk and running errands sound MUCH better!
GOING FOR THE ONE is always one of my favorites, as it represents the window through which I first started collecting their music. And the bonus tracks make this an even more special treat.
The rehearsal version of GOING FOR THE ONE is a rough instrumental run-through, with some interestingly different guitar work than what finally was used. TURN OF THE CENTURY in rehearsal form is a more electric and faster tempo'd approach. And if you think you recognize another familiar song within it, you'd be right. It seems that a theme from SILENTLY FALLING (Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water album) was considered for inclusion in this song. Jon's lyrics aren't very clear on this, as I think he was just rambling through it. Obviously it was a guide vocal, and the band was mainly concerned with the arrangement of the music. The time between the notes? A rehearsal of PARALLELS is a treat here. Again, the vocals aren't the best, but it's a rehearsal! VEVEY (REVISITED) is a previously unheard section of a longer track, two short edits of which appear on YESYEARS. Still too short, but lovely. MONTREUX'S THEME is the same track as on YESYEARS as is AMAZING GRACE. It's nice to have the oddities from this period together in one place, even though the bonus tracks are quite raw in contrast to the original 5 GFTO tracks.
But the highlight of the previously unheard tracks for me is the early version of AWAKEN, called EASTERN NUMBER here. This track makes a good companion piece to the "work shop" version of AWAKEN from the 2002 XM Satellite Radio acoustic set. Not yet fully developed, it's a joy to hear the bands' creative process in action, working out the bugs in one of their most loved songs.
The YES on Rhino saga to be continued in 2004...So far these have been great.

Why would anyone boycott these versions Rob? This album has always been in my top 3 or 4,esp. since it includes my fav YES song-Awaken, but on this version the true harder rock edge, esp. Rick's guitar sound, shines through on GFTO,Parallels, and the alternate version of Tales of the Century-which musically is great, again using Jon's vocals as just a guide. I hate that Rick's keyboards are mostly lost on the alternate takes, esp. Eastern Numbers-which is very interesting, but also makes me appreciate the finished "Awaken" that much more!!! Again, the liner notes, pictures, and packaging are great-except for why the jewel case, instead of the digipack. I have a teeling the next 3 to be released in 2004(Tormato,Drama,and 90125) will packaged like this. Me, personally, am building my collection with these issues, I think they will be tough to ever surpass sonically! I say BRAVO Rhino! P.S. I had never read that quote from Jon about Patrick getting the big head, and thinking he could do anything he wanted!! Quite interesting!

Well, there are a small percentage of Yes fans who say they refuse to buy these albums all over again. Those are the ones whose "boycotting" I referred to. And I agree...the jewel case was a let down. Should have been a digipack. But if you examine the collection so far, only the album covers designed by Roger Dean have been done in digipack.

I have a very tiny gripe with the Rhino remasters. The spine of GFTO has the early word bubble logo. I figured we would see the later Dean logo on the mid-period reissues and the 90125 symbol or the box logo in the last series. The word bubble is going to look a little weird next to the computerized Yes covers. Otherwise I think Rhino are doing a great job.

I don't mind the balloon logo. In fact, it's kind of cool that this logo designed by Peter Banks is being spread across the catalog. Without Peter we may not be calling them YES at all.
I do, however, think that cream colored insert looks BLAH. It should have been blue to match the cover art. A digipack would have been better, but I think the idea was to have only the Dean covers in digipacks.
But this is still LIGHTYEARS better than the Ratlantic remasters.

I didn't mind the Wordbubble.
What I am listening to over and over are 'Eastern Numbers' and the run-through of Going For The One. Fantastic!
'Turn Of The Silenty Falling Fish' is fun as well.
And Parallels (Could those BGVs have sounded any crustier?! Like a 'Colostomy Spills Gnash and Yuck' out-take! Better scratch-vocals than most bands though!).
Loving it! It's about time! Now, more out-takes please!

Just bought it, looks nice, I'm very impressed with the booklets on these re-issues as well. Nice to see the old fold out sleeve still intact albeit, obviously, greatly reduced.
Just a question. Who is Tim Jones who writes the liner notes? I know who Bill Martin & Mike Tiano are who wrote all of the other ones I have, but I'm not aware of Tim Jones.
BTW who wrote the Tales sleeve notes, that's the only one I don't have yet?

Out of all the remasters from Atlantic, Gft1 was the most disappointing to me, so it is great to finally here my favorite Yes/all-time album in a top-form.
Too bad there was no Moraz era Awaken material included.
Also Yes missed a great chance to credit Moraz as a composer [they could have done it on Eastern #'s ] but instead they dredge up anderson slagging Moraz for being a 'rockstar'.
I thought that was the saddest. aprt of the whole package.
Personally I qwould love to have seen a Dean retro cover. Tormato was such a weird follow up to Gft1 I don't really care what the cover is, but Gft1 was/is pure Classical Yes, and deserves a Dean cover!
oh well, at least the music is being served up in a vastly improved sonic fashion.
Thanks Rhino!
[and don't forget Yessongs and Yesshows!]

if that album had turn of the century 8 times, it still would have been great.

Wondering the same thing. (I liked the sleeve notes on this one!)

well, maybe I'm the only one on this thread that is NOT a moderator or a super mega something, but wish to comment on the GFT1 re-re-release: like with all remasters series, it is always good to get a few bonus stuff here and there. and this Cd does provide quite some of that: when Rob bought his first Yes album, I had already seen them twice and had started with Fragile in '72. At the time, accepting a non-Roger Dean cover was a little hard for me but had mixed feelings since this one marked the first of many "returns" for Wakeman. Yeah, I do agree that it is a let down that Rhino did not release this one as a digi-pack but now that you folks pointed that out, I had not noticed that those are reserved only for Dean covers. I have yet to lay my hands on TFTO and Relayer copies since these lastest Rhino remasters are very hard to find in stores here in south Texas, none of the Best Buys carry it and the few ones available elsewhere were snatched up pretty fast. I had not bought any of these Rhino series until this 2nd batch, and it was worth the wait.

so far tales is the most completely improved album as far as remastering the sound has went. i'm amazed at how well the sound was improved.
i think that's because the sound on that was inferior to the relayer and going for hte one albums originally. now that it's been brought back up to vinyl quality the music is amazing.
so far, the weakest set has been "relayer". oh i love the labum, but the reissue has some extra tracks that are just a bit weak for me. still, the liner notes were nice and the sound quality is better.

TALES for me!
But GFTO is a fine remaster. Parallels sounds unparalleled. Awaken sounds like a finger running the rim of a crystal glass: perfection! All in all GFTO is my second favorite remaster of the bunch, the bonus material being of much interest, and it's about time!

..posted this in another part of the forum (sorry) but I think this is maybe the best place for it!
..one thing that KILLS me about the new Rhino GFTO is the glitch at the end of Turn of the Century .. Jon is singing "..and we'll both remember...... all those many years a-*glitch*-go oo ...." .. I remember this from an early CD (not from the original album... and I am sure it isn't on the Japanese hd import). Am I out of line here? is it just me? is there SUPPOSED to be a glitch? (I don't think so!) arrrggggg.. you would think it would have been fixed for this release (UK).. anyone?

Welcome to yesfans johnnyx! And I'll be listening for that if I ever get this CD . . . I had the original US CD release and don't remember all those many years ago. Uh . . . I mean, I don't remember that glitch.

johnnyx, just return the CD to the store from which you bought it. They'll just send it back to the distributor and give you a new one.

Yeah, the Rhino stuff is great. Is the Syn album going on Rhino and is Chris back playing bass for them as rumoured? Any one got any info?

I do have the whole RHINO batch of re-issues bar YES, the 1st album I mean TAAW, YA, FRAGILE, CTTE, TFTO, RELAYER, GFT1. Exquisite job.
They sound great, also the addition of bonus tracks is a very good idea, the package is very well done. Pity they didn't hitherto issued YESSONGS, possibly with extra tracks (why not America and SSOTS, for instance?).
Whoever loves these albums will do himself/herself a big gift buying them. Highly recommended.

the highest jump in sound quality for me of the rhino reissues was tales. especially the percussion. i never realized alan was so busy on this album. he seemed a bit subdued before.
I just got the rhino version of GFTO yesterday for my birthday and it sounds great! lots of cool bonus tracks too.

GFTO is the only Yes album I can comment on the change in quality since all the other albums I had on Rhino from the start but this one I replace from my old Atlantic one with the Rhino version and the quality is fantastic; Awaken really does benifit from this remaster the greatest I think, its so crisp!

Got the Rhino remaster 2 months ago. My last version was on LP. Sounds terrific and have been playing it in my "Yes" rotation frequently. "Awaken" has really opened my eyes, once again!!! Bonus tracks are good too.

PARALLELS is sooo much better sounding on this. I have an old GFT1 CD and the beginning of this song in particular sounds like mud when the bass and drums "crash" in. (I'm not sure if I have an Atlantic remaster or an older version.)
Anyway, of course, there had to be a slight glitch on the RHINO remaster...
The ambient intro to PARALLELS is actually at the end of the previous track. This causes a "problem" if you like to program the songs in a different order.

It's like that on my ancient "regular" Atlantic CD as well. Sucks.
But... if it's like that on the remasters as well, then perhaps it really is the outro of "Turn of the Century" and not the into to "Parallels"? I have never thought of it that way, I'm just sayin'.
