View Full Version : Let's all badger Earl again!
Friends and neighbors, and especially those of you that have heard Earl Grey's album LOVER'S RIDGE, I have a secret to share.
You ain't heard nothing yet.
He'll wring my neck for this, but I just can't contain myself: Earl's unfinished album HIGHWAY FLAIR, and the accompanying demos, are more inventive and exciting than even LOVER'S RIDGE.
Badger, nag, cajole Earl into selling you this wonderful tape. Unfinished or not, you'll enjoy these songs far more, even at a premium price (and I have no idea what he might charge for it - but whatever he asks, PAY IT), than you'll enjoy just about any singer/songwriter album you'll find at Disc Jockey ...
And I wuv you, too, Earlie ...

Oh strewth... Blushing again, damn it.
Does anyone have the capacity to burn a CD from a cassette tape? If so, I would gladly figure out some monetary way in which to pay you back for burning something from the cassette that Q speaks of... I feel bad sending out tapes, you know? They break and warp and and and...
I will honest to God do my best to have a new 'proper' CD out for you next year (Have to make some of my bills disappear first!).
But would love to let you hear the great 'aborted' project from 3 years ago, if you have a taste for such stuff. It would be good to have it on CD though: tapes suck! ;)
Thank you Q: I don't mind having people read my unfinished manuscript. I love listening to Let It Be and The Basement Tapes myself. I get it.
But remember, there was a reason for it being an 'unfinished' project!
I wish the guy who was producing didn;t have such a penchant for lighting the bong in the middle of tracks/etc. Not the best way to record an album, when the guy at the helm isn't quite 'there'.
I fired him, and wrote the thing off...
Some fun stuff in the grime though.

earlie is being modest. even his scratch-pad experiments bristle with invention and emotion and spirit. i have listened to this tape over and over and am still finding it exhilarating!

Did you like the 8-track version of 'I Amnesia', with the warped-out demented whale-song harmonica solo? Hehe! When the demos sound better than the mastertape, you know SOMETHING is wrong!
But glad you found some charm in there...

Techie nerds here at work tell me it easy to convert from tape to CD using Nero

Yeah, I have NERO.
A pretty simple program... AW MAN! I don't know computers! They still freak me out! I still imagine that these gigabytes are ink smears that I white-out and shuffle around in a tactile manner: this computer is an instant-karma typewriter: a nice simple IBM Selectric, or better: an acoustic 'Underwood' with a nice 'ker-chunck' at the end of every sentence...
Erch.
Sped Blavio said he would talk me through the thing. And if I still don't 'get it' afterwards, he would burn the tape to CD. So, OK.
All Hail King ludd.
I would love to burn this puppy, so give me a couple of weeks: I'll figure it out: make it so. Earl Grey Hot!: Make it so!
Always a purple mountain majesty, feet don't fail me now! Is that a hand-grip or a fatal flaw in the face of the mile-high butte?
It's a butte! ;) Thank you. Kisses.

I have a copy of Earl's LIGHT YEARS album. It's great. I love it. And I have a cassette of LOVER'S RIDGE but I don't play it because my tape deck died. Waiting for the CD version, remastered with bonus tracks!
Nice stuff there Elephant Man Earl!!!

Thank you Rob and Dee and Kathy, and Q.
It will happen.
...Might take me a bit to figure the NERO-thing out, but you are the first on the list to hear my recorded hiccoughs. Hack hack! Ergh.
I have some really good friends here. I love them all. YES rules! Hiccough hiccough... Do you want a copy of that?!

Sometimes a demo is just as good as the final production, if not better. A good example of this can be heard if you check out Pete Townshend's Scoop albums, or if you've ever heard the unreleased Tommy demos.
Sometimes the first snapshot of a song represents it better than a carefully crafted recording.

Hey Earlie, please add me to the list of recipients when you have the finished product.
I'm sure I can figure out a way to thank you!:D

Me too, Earl! I definitely would like a copy! Good luck with Nero. I recently bought a gadget/software called a Dazzle which has I/O jacks, and I think connects to the computer via USB cable. First unencumbered weekend I have I will try it out and see if I can burn tape to CD - will keep you posted.
It's also supposed to work for VHS to DVD too, so Earl, if you have any video tapes of your gigs?
