What do you think of the Holy Lamb tune off of Big Generator?

 You just made me laugh with option #7 as I just got done reading the other thread 'Worst Yes Album'. I am a cam-er-a, cam-er-a, cam-er-a.... oops, you were trying to get that OUT of your head weren't you?
Anyhow, interesting you mention this song. I didn't even realize it existed for a long time, until I stumbled upon it when playing the whole album one day. Great song! One of the best tracks off of the album I feel.

I gave the song a 7, but I must say, that I do not agree with the "better than 'I Am A Camera part.'" First of all, it's "Into the Lens," and second of all, I give that song a 9, best song on DRAMA.

Don't own BG anymore and that is the only tune i ever bothered to or wished to learn to play [and sing].
A 'classical' yes tune in the midst of a YesWest effort.
worth the price of Big generator in the Used or bargain bin for sure!
The only tune on the album I would miss if all copies of the record suddenly disappeared, the rest of the album is ok for driving late at night, in order to stay awake...

I had to put it in and listen to it before I could vote. I agree it the only classic YES sounding song on the album. Gave it an 8. I also really like Shoot High Aim Low on BG.

Hi Guys - I don't know if any of you have heard Holy Lamb live? They did it on the Big Gen tour at the early stages at least. I have a boot of the opening night in Omaha. It is radically different than the studio version. It goes for about 13 minutes and is interspered with the wurm section from Starship Trooper!! Trevor, and the other guys too, really go off on it :))

HOLY LAMB is very close to my heart, one of a few YES songs that remind me of a fiance who passed away in '92 from heart trouble.
A lot of emotion is packed into this short track.
So far I saw Holy Lamb as a filler. I'll have to listen again to the Big Generator carefully to see if my opinion has changed with time.

Brismike............Will have to email you about that boot. Holy Lamb live for 13mins sounds too good to be true. Would love to hear that. are you still hanging in there for the "annoncement of the century" It must come soon. If only the rest of the "Yes world" knew what it was like to have to wait sooooooooooo long for a tour. But I know there is alot of fans from other parts of the world who do sympathise will us and wish us the best in getting them out here. I love the idea of a concert at the Sydney Opera House. There here I am posting about Holy Lamb and then end up pushing for a Yes tour of Oz.

I agree with Flo, it was filler material, but not bad. Nice lyrics, but a weak song, especially following 'I'm Running', which is a great Yes song....Jack..
You're right Jack. Listening to "Holy Lamb" right after "I'm running" is too bad. "I'm running" is such a stunning song (my favourite from Big Generator.

Good poll this, especially as I started a thread ages ago asking for fans' viewpoints on Holy Lamb! As I stated in that thread, I love Holy Lamb. I always get quite emotional when I hear it and I find it very inspirational. Classic closer to Big Generator. I, of course, gave it a 10!

I gave it a 10 also, but you must be mad or have no soul if you can hate such a beautiful song. Funnily enough its about the only song on BG that they don't have a alternate recording for on the remaster..... thats the remaster that hasn't been released yet, but which I've got a copy of and which your all meant to vote for over on Yesnet so that Rhino remaster it (like they have already) and then release it (which they haven't) so you can buy it (like you cannot)

OK, that was a long time ago, and I'm not sure why I posted that, because I always saw I'm Running and Holy Lamb as one long song, even though they are seperate. Kinda like how Soon ends Gates, so does Holy Lamb end I'm Running.
Now by itself it is a bit weak, but the two songs together are a pretty strong statement on life in 1987, as well as (if not more so) today.

Considering the rest of the album, which I think is pretty weak, Holy Lamb is a pretty good song. I agree with Yarstruly, I wish it was longer. In fact, I think if it was expanded it has the potential to be a great song.

I don't know why but I find the song VERY moving. Particularly when he sings "Hold the line, out of love we'll come a long, long glorious way," my hair stands on end. In a good way. I gave it a 10, I rank it right up there with Soon.
PrimeMover
04-07-2005, 06:01 AM
The song could have been longer yeah. Trevor said in an interview that if he would have produced it today now would have created some more kind of Soon feeling over it. It's great singing by Jon, but I don't know if it's better than Into The lens though. I suppose you meant that song when you wrote I am a camera.

I haven't been able to locate a copy of Big Generator in order to listen to Holy Lamb . Yo soy un hombre sincero, pero pobre; I depend on my public library for most of my Yes which is admirably stocked except for BG. . . . Are the lyrics at all related to those of Dear Father off the first Yes album (1969)? I doubt it. Dear Father is a Jesus Christ Superstar agnostic tautology covering The Holy Lamb's conversation with God in the Garden of Gethsemane. . . uniquely direct and specifically Christian material for Yes, I believe.
Then again, I'm only guessing about Holy Lamb, since I've never heard it. If it's dealing with some other Holy Lamb, please excuse my digression into Dear Father which I have heard and find intriguing as alluded.
Listening to Steve Howe's Wurm as I write; now that's an expression of spiritual ecstasy which GF Handel might have envied. :headset: :git[1]:
PS: Maybe someone could send me/us an audio download of Holy Lamb. . . Tanks you, berry musch; or is that not legal? - :newbie:

I believe that Holy Lamb was like the song says, song for harmonic convergence, and was written with the intent of the harmonic convergence of that time. the harmonic convergence which was put together by my boss, Jose Arguelles, organized people all over the world in sacred locations to collectively meditate or pray for an awakening to love and bringing in the awareness of a new cycle that would be the countdown to 2012. The collective consciousness is a powerful thing. This event actually made front page of the wall street journal. By the way, Jon knows Jose and met with him on occasion while they both were residing in Hawaii. BUT who knows right! I know nothing! (grin)

great track but i think it would have best suited a place on a jon solo recording.
They did the same type of thing with nine voices which again was the last track on the ladder. Again that would have suited a jon's solo outing project. also time is time on magnification

Sorry folks...I think it is great. 8 for me. I like the acoustic start, then electric build in the middle and then the killer note bending synth solo to close. Reminds me of Moraz' s playing on Long Distance Voyager (great album!) which was most solid. Who did the synth solo at the end? Trevor or Tony?

It was probably Trevor. I remember reading a review of Big Generator where it said that Holy Lamb wasn't good because it was the one song on the album where Jon was not singing as part of the team, but only for his own glory.
There's some truth in that, although I do like the song, even if it's only as a counter weight to Trevor's Love Will Find A Way...
Moraz with the Moody Blues is something I never understood. Why would he go from a very experimental band (which Yes was at that time) to a somewhat fossilized symfo-dinosaur like the Moody Blues? :headset:

I'm guessing you may be mixing apples and oranges, Dakini. The collective unconscious/memory is a Jungian postulate. Freud and his disciple Jung were notorious atheists (Freud committed euthanasia with the assistance of his physician). Harmonic Convergence implies an Intelligent Designer/Higher Power.

Interesting because I also read Trevor stating he would have liked to have done more with that song. And then there was Chris who said they had a completely different running order on side 2 (lp/cassette days) that would be tied together a la Abbey Road.
It belongs on a Jon solo album, not a YES album.

This is one of those songs that I put on when I'm feeling a little down some times, like and you and I or wonderous stories. There are times when I feel like a light that's lost upon the stage, and when I feel this way, all I need to do is put on this amazing song..... holy lamb.
It always makes me see the magic of the earth and the skies. It was fun to see too on the big G tour. They had some kind of inflated moon on stage when I saw them, I think.
It would be nice to hear this song again on the next yes tour. I can see steve howe having some fun with this song using his elec. & ac mandolins and rick maybe on a harpsichord.
As I look out..... in the night....strange and startling, was this voice of time just saying "there's got to be a linking of everyone"......

First of all: I'm not a big Rabin fan. But:
1. Something To Hold On To is great. It should have been on Big Generator in stead of Love Will Find A Way.
2. There's a little instrumental on it called Sludge. This is really a lovely surprise on the rather straight-forward-middle-of-the-road-rock album. It's almost asif Trevor put it on just to show us what incredible things you can do on a guitar. Just to get that out of the way and go back to some more straight-forward-middle-of-the-road-rock! I almost dare say that in those 2.5 minutes he smashes anything Howe did in the 80s to bits.
But I wouldn't buy the album just for these two tracks... :headset:

Not sure how long ago you posted about this album, but I am eager to learn more. Are you saying that you actually have a remastered unreleased version of the album in your possession? I was extremely pleased when Rhino remastered and expanded all those Yes albums a few years ago. However, I've always been disappointed that they stopped at Big Generator, not to mention the exclusion of ABWH and Union. Of course ABWH technically wasn't a Yes album, but neither was Drama for that matter. Anyway, please let me know more about the new Big Generator. How did you manage to get this? And yes, it is very surprising that their would not be an alternate version of "Holy Lamb."

I gave it a 3.
I think it's the YesWest interpretation of 'Soon'. Although it's no match for Soon- and I'm a die hard Rabinite- I would put it as one off my top songs off the Big Generator album. I like the ending to it, very driving and forceful. It's a shame they didn't play it live like that, but then they never came this way to play it (and I wasn't old enough to appreciate them!) so always the studio version is preferred. Trevor did say that he wished he'd given it the aura 'Soon' has...but I don't think that would be possible. It's not something I believe you can just create, that aura.

When first hearing it, I was sure this song was the first time Yes used that progression of the major chord to its relative minor as was used in so many of the 50s and 60s rock 'n roll songs. I was almost shocked hearing that, yet the song is so beautiful. Yes was able to do it in a wonderful way. I love the song.
For that, I give it a 6.74315826.
Then I heard "Final Eyes". It used that old rock 'n roll progression in a similar way.
This song I rate higher. "If ever I needed someone" ! ! ! :hearts:
