View Full Version : Jump the shark moments

Heard this one on the radio sports talk I listen too.
Everyone has seen Happy Days. Remember when the Fonz from the show went to CA and was water skiing with his leather coat on and jumped a shark. For many that was the beginning of the end of that show. Can you name a "jump the shark" moment for other shows, music groups, atheletes and so forth? Moments in a career that ruined it for that career.
More examples...
Kazoo from the Flintstones, show went down hill from there.
All in the family, when meat head and his family moved to CA and Achie opened Archies place, show went down hill from there.
What can you come up with?

There's a whole site devoted to the "Jump the Shark" idea.
I don't think they do bands at that site, but Van Halen jumped the shark for good when they joined forces with Gary Cherone to very mediocre results. I could argue that it happened earlier than that . . . maybe at their live album.
The DUKES OF HAZZARD jumped the shark when they replaced Bo & Luke with their cousins Vance & Coy.

ELP's Love Beach, EltonJohn's album after Blue Moves--don't even remember what it was called, ugh!!!!
In sports--the BlackHawks trading away Phil Espositio; the Cubs getting rid of Lou Brock--hey, this is all Chicago stuff!

It seems like whenever I have seen a famous person who began doing info-mercials, his or her career seemed to screech to a halt right there (or at least a professional reputation was tarnished for good).
Cher did this, still has a career, but is considered somewhat of a joke now.

Genesis going 'pop' in the eighties...
Dylan playing the Budukan in an Elvis suit, with a Vegas-style band, back in 1979. He's done a few nice things since: 'Oh Mercy', Infidels', ...but has had an infuriating pattern of following a spark of brilliance with another 5 years of laziness. He never recovered from that Elvissuit...
The effect of Bonzo's death on Jimmy Page/Robert Plant.
They never really did anything else 'new' of note ('Now And Zen' by Robert Plant was nice... That was it!).
George Lucas after 'Return Of The Jedi'. I was beginning to wonder when he introduced the fuzzy little bears at the end of the film, if he hadn't lost his touch... It took a decade to find out, but yes, he'd lost his touch! Jump the ewok!
Kevin Costner after Waterworld (OK: an obvious one, but pretty extreme!).
Igor making an impression on the security guard... ;)

Queen when they started using synthesisers (apart from the last two before Freddie died, they were quite good).
Tony Blair's government after three screw ups: 1) not marking A-level papers properly last year, 2) having his head so far up Bushe's arse that you can't see where one starts and the other ends, and 3) increasing tuition fees. Kind of more like falling in a shark tank, being chased and then eaten, I think.
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire after the first million was given away. It became a bit boring after that.
Derby County when we sold two of our best players to Boro (Martin, you bastard!). I have not left them yet though.

Cousin Oliver (aka Cindy gets breasteses)
Jay Leno
Bill Murray playing Hunter Thompson. (I've heard he has never been the same)
I'm sure to come up with more.

Pink Floyd, when the Waters, Gilmour, Wright, Mason team was torn apart. Despite the continued success they had without Roger, it somehow wasn't the same.

Jon Anderson of Yes...during the Full Circle Europe Tour
"Don't kill the whale, don't kill the birds, don't kill the bees...please!"
As my nick already says I'm a big fan of Jon and his work but at the recent shows Jon introduced 'Don't Kill The Whale' with this line and I really think it's corny. So the whale became a shark...?
It's not as drastic as some shark moments already mntioned here but it's a big difference to Dawn of light lying between the silence and sold sources, chased amid fusions of wonder..."
No Smoking in "adult" establishments.
Health clubs don't serve beer, but I guess these new kindergartens do. All the wrong people are in the clubs (no more bands either 'cause it's "too loud").

I was about to post that Jump The Shark link, too..It's a great site!!
Dark Shadows: Jumped the shark when The Leviathans story began. It just went on too long and everybody was one...But after that it jumped back. The 1970 Parallel Time story was wonderful. It jumped again at the 1841PT story. That was just stupid.
The Monkees: It didn't last long enough to jump the shark. However, the only possible jump was where they took off from the show and ran around Paris aimlessly, (shot on film not video no less!). God, how I hated that tripe!!
As for music, well...I'll need to think that one over a bit!

Hey, I liked the Monkees! :D
I agree about Dark Shadows and the Leviathan story - the Victorian era/Quentin story was fantastic, then Barnabas came back to that? I was glad when it was over. But afterwards, the parallel time story was great, then they came back to one of the spookiest stories ever - the destruction of Collinwood - followed by the 1840 story - loved it.
I think the last parallel time story was thrown in to finish the season out, after they had been canned. I didn't dislike it, but it did seem an afterthought. A show I miss though - I remember when it originally aired - so cool - a soap opera about the supernatural. . .
