This is a pretty dead forum, but I thought I'd add to it. "Going For The One" was released on this day in 1977. 7/7/77. Weird huh? "Going For The One" is my favorite YES album.

...for the first time 26 years ago today!

I honestly do remember the day. Hotter than hell here in Chicago, just like it is today. I bought the album in the afternoon, took it up to my room and blasted it on my headphones. I was in absolute heaven.

But the bummer for the day was I developed a nasty, nasty sinus headache that nothing seemed to help, so I ended falling asleep with my head on my husband's lap--we had just started going out, so it was all pretty innocent.

Although I only got into YES around the time of 90125 some eight years after Going for the One came out, Awaken holds special meaning for me in that it was the first out and out YES classic I ever heard. It was played on Friday night on Radio one (that's in the UK) as it had come in ninth or tenth in a special listeners' poll of all-time favourite rock tracks. I remember I was in my brother's room at the time (he no longer likes YES but he introduced me to the band's music for which I will be eternally grateful!) and just thought 'this is awesome stuff! How come I never heard this band before? This is amazing!' I remember being particularly struck my Rick's keyboard playing and Jon's angelic singing. It was a great moment and has stayed with me ever since (and that must have been the best part of 20 years ago!)

26 years ago I discovered that YES were more than ROUNDABOUT. A friend of mine had CLOSE TO THE EDGE at his house and I got buzzed on weed and we listened to it. I was impressed beyond words. The next day I went to the record shop and tried to get a copy. They seemed to be sold out so I asked the manager if there were any in the store at all. He said "No, but we have the newest YES album. It just came out last week. It's quite good."

And so I bought GOING FOR THE ONE as my first YES purchase. What a great album. I'll never forget how it felt to get acqainted with those songs for the first time. I was in awe. I knew then I needed ALL the YES albums.

I remember it like it was yesterday.
Once I heard this one, I was a goner...
From that moment on, I was a Yesfanatic!
Bound forever to them and their music,
shouting their praises from every mountain top!

Hey, Tardis, guess where I was 26 years ago today?
Port 'O Call Records in Harding Mall!

My favorite album.
It's good to know that so many had the same "gotta catch 'em all" experience that I had after hearing this album.

Funny thing, so many of us remember where we were when this album was released!

I have another memory regarding it. At the time, I was in college, on the school's radio station. Whever we got albums in, the staff would review them, rating each song so the disc jockeys would know which tracks were worth playing. We were allowed to take home five albums at one time. Because GFTO came out during the summer when we weren't operating, there was a backlog of albums to review at the end of August. I made sure I got in there early, so I could grab GFTO, which I did.

We had a rating from 1 to 4 stars. I can still remember what I gave every track, even thought I wouldn't necessarily give them the same ratings today: GFTO-2-1/2, TOC,-4, Parallels-3-1/2, Wonderous Stories-4, and Awaken-5. I got a lot of grief at the time for giving Awaken 5. Our GM said, "But we don't have a 5." (This was before Spinal Tap--this one goes to 11.) I replied, "This one does."

On Cassette! Not on LP...

I was on vacation, had my little tape recorder with me (Traveling through Arizona... Gazing at great monoliths of red rock rising on all sides... 'Turn Of The Century' playing for the very first time as we drove past Sunset Crater in flagstaff... Amazingly apropo!).

I bought it on LP when I got home to sunny California (Arizona was sunnier baby!)...

But the first listen was on a little tape recorder, the non-stereo mix rising up like an incantation, redtail hawk hanging on the waves of heated air...

I'll never forget.

One enduring memory of that year was the billboard on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood of the cover "art" of Mr. Century-City-Buns with PANTS. The world was appearantly not ready...

Think I heard about that!

My girlfriends and I used to sit around and stare at the album cover
trying to decide which band member's buns were featured!

It was the first Yes album that I heard. It was kind of impossible for me to listen to it in 1977 since I wasn't actually alive then, but I discovered it in 2001. And bloody loved it.

Hands up all the ladies who think "Jon's" got a nice arse...

Going For The One. was the first Yes album I heard, it was in 77. A freind gave it me to listen to. Up to that point I'd never listened to rock music at all.
I couln't beleive it I absolutely loved it straight away, loved every track. Infact i loved everything about it, including the album cover and the notes inside. I couldn't beleive there could be a better album ever. But, them i started to buy more Yes albums and discovered that there was.
Going for the One has always being one of my favourite albums.
