Just picked up my first Horace Silver album: Best of Blue note vol.2
Has SONG FOR MY FATHER - which many recognize as the song that STEELY DAN "borrowed" the bass riff from for RIKKI DON'T LOSE MY NUMBER.
Similar to Herbie Hancock's 1960's work for the label.
Wanted to know if others enjoy his work, and any suggestions for other albums

NOW we're talking! :bncy:

You will want:

Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers (1955; Blue Note)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51RXZYPZTJL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Six Pieces of Silver (1956; Blue Note)

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/5739/covercustomk.jpg

And...

Finger Poppin With the Horace Silver Quintet (1959)
Blowin' The Blues Away (1959)
Song For My Father (1964) (why not get the entire album? :D)
The Jody Grind (1966)

(these four are also Blue Note)

Two other artists/groups besides SD also lifted bits from SfMF. See if you can guess their identities.

Enjoy, enjoy!

What she said. Horace was a GIANT among jazzers, Wonderful writer and great pianist/bandleader. Our trio/quartet is going to do Senor Blues and The Jody Grind soon!

"Cape Verdean Blues" is nice, too- in fact anything w/ Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone (with or without Horace) is a winner.

A concert was unearthed a few years back that was fantastic, too. It was released as "Live At Newport '58", and it kicks from start to finish.

That's one Matt and I need to get, definitely.

"Cape Verdean Blues" is only a couple marks below the classics you mentioned- not quite on "Song For My Father" level, but nice.

The 1958 Newport set is really, really great. Louis Smith on trumpet, and he wasn't in the band long. He is very fine, unheralded. Like James Spaulding (the alto sax & flute cat from Blue Note days who also got almost no love...)

;)

PS- Matt, "The Jody Grind" 'll get 'em movin' every time- 100 % promise! ;)

Just looked as the replies - thanks. Duly noted.
Been checking out some tunes on YOUTUBE.
I actually picked up THE TOKYO BLUES.
Others to follow.

For the longest time have been focused on Miles, Coletrane, Herbie, Rollins, and a peppering of a few others. Wanted to get some works by others that I've heard of, or have seen as sidemen.

Other new purchases:
Ready for Freddie : FREDDIE HUBBARD
Journey : McCOY TYNER

Anything Freddie recorded for Blue Note is a sure winner; the early 1970's (CTI label) stuff is great, too. Steer clear of the mid 1970's & 1980's material- a bad time for Freddie.

"Hub Tones", "Here To Stay" & "Breaking Point" are especially highly recommended... ;)

Henderson was long gone by 1968, of course, but seeing Cobham cookin' on the drumkit w/ the Silver group is a treat.

Man, I needs me a Time Machine.

That kicked ass---thanks for posting it! I particularly loved watching and hearing Bill Hardman; I have this thing for quirky embouchures :D

No thanks necessary. Hardman is great- his work w/ Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers is particularly stellar-much like so many great artists of the time (in jazz) he is somewhat forgotten. And I know Maupin on Bass Clarinet (w/ Miles), so hearing him on tenor was cool.

These video clips are great: SONG FOR MY FATHER & NUTVILLE. They really get to stretch out!

And Horace's look - the hair & sideburns. Trailblazing in all feilds.
