I was thinking of the fact, that I probably like some of the live versions of the songs from this album more than the studio versions, and I came to this idea of "CTTE live". I mean a live album, that would have the same tracklist as the original studio album (i.e. CTTE/AYAI/SK), but all live, taken from various live albums.
Let's see:
CTTE appeared on Yessongs, An Evening of Yes Music Plus, KTA2 and as a bonus to Magnification (Masterworks tour)
AYAI appeared on Yessongs, Yesyears (4th disc, with Rabin on guitar), An Evening of Yes Music Plus, KTA2 and House of Yes
and SK appeared on Yessongs and KTA1

My "CTTE live" would include:

CTTE - from An Evening of Yes Music Plus
AYAI - from House of Yes
SK - from KTA1

What would be yours? You can use versions from official live recordings only.

CTTE & SK from Yessongs

I'm not very happy with any of the official live versions of AYAI but I'll plump for Keys. I'd rather have the Universal Amphitheatre LA version from the OYE tour though

Me actually too, Martin. But I can't expect all fans to know all the unofficcial recordings... ;)

Oh yes I agree with your criteria, gotta stick with the official versions for this purpose

SK - from KTA1I really like your choices, Roman. I immediately thought of "Close To The Edge" from AN EVENING OF YES MUSIC PLUS because it's the only one with Bill drumming. (If there were one from the UNION tour, I might like that better. That's my favorite version of "Awaken".)

For "And You And I" - with the exception of Jon's vocals (at one point he goes quite sharp) - I like the YESYEARS version with Trevor on guitar. I'm not sure if I'd use that one, though. I think that this project would require a Steve-on-guitar version. So HOUSE OF YES seems like a good pick.

"Siberian Khatru"? Well, it's hard not to pick the YESSONGS version, especially if you include the "Firebird" opening. The KEYS TO ASCENSION one is a bit slow to these ears. My guess is, if a DVD of the current tour is released, that will be the best live version of "Siberian Khatru" out there. I just think it'll be better than KEYS TO ASCENSION. (I'm hoping, anyway.)

I did a similar project with THE YES ALBUM, TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS, RELAYER, and a blend of GOING FOR THE ONE and TORMATO, using whatever I could get my hands on - official or otherwise. For "A Venture", which was never played live, I just used the studio version. For the GOING FOR THE ONE / TORMATO combo, I just used the tracks I had available (hence the combo.)

They're fun collections to put together. I hope you've inspired some YesFans to try it.

P.S. The rumored 3-disc, live collection still comes to mind. What might it contain?

I agree with you on this absolutely! Have you read my review of the Prague concert two days ago? I was very positively surprised with Siberian Khatru. Before the show I just thought: Well, they have to play it as together with Firebird this is the classical opener, but I never really cared for this song. However, it amazingly blew me away! I never liked the song so much and it became one of the highlights of the shows for me. Steve's playing was so great!

Yessongs version of SK is good, but the recording isn't as clear as on KTA (at least it doesn't sound that clear to me). The recording quality makes it sound a little dated to me, even when the music is timeless.

I agree also - these are great choices!

I think there is something about improvisation and knowing that your aren't being Memorexed that gives some freedom to the spirit of the moment. I think that's why some of the weeds are my preferred listening.

Love that Wembley and love that Chicago show.

This was a bonus track on the Australian release of Magnification - so that would be my choice there.

Agree with CTTE from ABWH but prefer SK from Yessongs

Roman,

I had the same idea late last night while looking at my massive collection of audience recordings, all 4 of them. I wondered if it would be possible to get a live version of Tormato.

I had fogotten about it until I read your post. As Dragonfly stated, you've inspired at least one YesFan to try. I'm sure it will take forever since I have to wait for different shows to be weeded, but it's something I am now committed to.

I'll probably work on Relayer at the same time, I only need To Be Over to complete it.

Thanks for the inspiration,

Bill

Oh, I didn't know...

Btw, I was listening to different versions of AYAI yesterday and actually realised that, sadly, none of them can evoke the same wonderful feeling as when you're hearing this song in a (real) live show. I wonder if there's something fragile on this song that gets destroyed with recording... Nevertheless, I love listening to this song now more than I ever did.

Dragonfly, the idea of making collections of different YES songs on one cd is one I have taken on board a few times. I have one cd of live recordings which has CTTE, Ritual, Awaken and Starship Trooper on. It's awesome moving through from CTTE to Ritual, one epic after another! I have another which contains live renditions of Gates, Yours is No Disgrace (the amazing Yessongs version - Steve flies off into a brilliant stratosphere on this one!) and Wonderous Stories. As relates to your postnote, I heard Jon mention the 3 disc live collection on Rockline on Wednesday night. He said it would be a disc for the 60s, 70s and 80s which is a great idea as it will display Yes's talents over three decades and highlight the progression they made throughout these different time periods. It will also be interesting comparing the different styles of the Yeswest line up and the classic line up.

Cheers
Mark
