Happy birthday to my most favorite stranger, Rick Wakeman.
May 18 is also the feast of the Archangel Raphael celebrated by Catholics.
According to legend (as the story goes), it was Raphael who handed Noe (aka Noah, Protestant, King James Version) a "medical book" thought to be the famous Sefer Raziel. Also, Solomon, son of David, prayed to God for help building the temple, God answered with the gift of a magic ring delivered to the Hebrew king personally by Raphael. The ring had the power to subdue all demons, and Solomon was able to complete the temple with the "slave labor" of demons. An Ophite (Gnostic sect) diagram depicts Raphael as the terrestrial daemon with a beastlike form in the company of three other angels: Michael, Suriel, and Gabriel. He is generally credited to be the angels who troubled the waters at the pool in ancient Bethesda. He is one of the three angels who visited Abraham and also the angel who heal Abraham of the pain of circumcision and sent to heal Jacob’s thigh after he wrestled with a dark adversary at Peniel. (Jacob’s ladder story). He first appeared in the Book of Tobit to guided Tobit’s son, Tobias.
Raphael is officially considered a virtue, he is said to have the six wings of a seraph; at the same time, he belongs to the cherubim, the dominions and the powers. He is said to be the chummiest and funniest of all angels and is often pictured chatting merrily with mortal beings. Raphael is also one of the seven angels of the Apocalypse, and is also numbered among the ten holy sefiroth who issue from the right side of God, unlike the ten unholy ones who issue from the left. Besides being ruler of the angels of healing, he is considered the regent of the Sun, chief of the order of virtues, governor of the south, guardian of the west, ruling prince of the second heaven, overseer of the evening winds, guardian of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, one of the six angels of repentance, and an angel of prayer, love, joy and light. He is also an angel of science and knowledge and the preceptor angel of Isaac.
Isn't Wakeman special!! Chummiest & funniest of all angels... so it fits, right? Gift of magic ring ... how much does Wakeman love Tolkien?
Sefiroth = represents a divine emanation through which God manifested his existence during the creation of the universe.
God’s will & his thought;
God’s plan for the universe;
God’s intelligence;
diving love;
divine judgment;
divine compassion;
lasting endurance (or eternity);
divine majesty;
the base of every activity in God; and
the presence of God
Daemon = Greek word for soul (and is the source for our English word demon.)
hahahahah, I’ve got too much time on my hands wasting away ... oops, wrong band.

Peggy,
Love your post. Now I'm Catholic and never knew all that stuff about the angels--went to not 12, but 16 years of Catholic school too, even went to a Catholic college. Oh zap me with a Mini Moog for my heresy. Today is also the Pope's birthday.
Well, I decided today is the perfect day to have a Rick fest. I put on Six Wives and Anne of Cleves is now playing.
Rick,
I will never forget March 5, 1974. You, and the current Yes lineup, were playing in Minneapolis. I knew a fairly good amount of then-current Yes music, but only from then-current home stereos and the radio. This was the 1st time I saw Yes.
Your use of the Mellotron at the beginning of "Siberian" forever changed my outlook on "Rock" music. I heard multiple horizons. I was able to comprehend infinity. A world was opened up. As a budding musician, you and Steve added that ingredient that few ever realize. All in that opening moment.
I even moved my dad's Aeolian player piano next to his Hammond organ at a right angle in the living room. He didn't like it because only one bench would fit. But, I did catch him reaching over to the piano while he was paying the Hammond (he was a jet fighter pilot)!
I never sold an instrument since then. I just add them. And it's YOUR fault! I appreciate it!

It's so wonderful to hear Rick Wakeman back with YES and his humor is as sharp as ever. The acoustic YES and Wakeman shows that are being re-weeded on this site (thank you one and all for the CD's I've received) are spwctacular and show that Mr. Wakeman's talents have not diminished over all these years.
Man, we are a lucky bunch to have these YES members a part of our lives; aren't we !
Happy Birthday Rick. . . And Bill Brufords was on the 17th (last night - read my review).

Paul,
What a cool post! See what Rick does to us. Ya know, I was kinda mad at you for a bit (you didin't know that) because of some of the Trevor posts, but our Wizard brings us all together, doesn't he?
I used to be much more partial to Keith Emerson when I was a teenager, but now Rick is my enduring keyboard love!
Yes, I am still haveing my Wakemanfest today. Playing the simply Acoustic disc at the moment. Will head to the Yes stuff soon!

Good always over comes evil, doesn't it? Besides, one never forgets their first! (Rick, Steve; please don't read between the lines on that one!)

Happiest of birthdays to you, Mr. Wakeman. You are a truly gifted individual (in case you hadn't noticed) and I love what you do. The Minneapolis show this last fall was a huge highlight for me and seeing you perform was the icing on the cake. Many thanks for all you and yours have given me and mine over the years.
