I don't know why the VHS version is bad, but I like the DVD alot. The guys are so young and energetic, it is just plain fun to watch! Of course the sound quality is not up to todays standards, but I think it is much better than the Keys to Ascension DVD.

The sound quality isn't as good a Mag, but it's not unbearable. It's worth the $$$

Fastguido, the answer to your question is the Yessongs DVD is the same as the VHS. The picture/sound quality is the same

My laserdisc is so old. It's the original release without chapter search. (So lame.) I almost bought it again when they re-released the laserdisc with chapter-search. At the time, I was under the impression that the sound had been cleaned up a bit, too. The re-issued YESSONGS CD certainly sounds better than my original one. I’d hoped they’d have cleaned up the movie even more by the time they got around to releasing it on DVD.
What would really inspire me to pick it up again would be some bonus material. There are so many things they could offer. Some wouldn’t even be that hard or expensive to do. A photo album's pretty easy. Show photos of the band both live and in the studio or just walking around or whatnot as well as images of that tour’s program(s) and T-Shirt(s) (if any). Evening shots of neon-emblazoned marquees with “YES” in big-block letters would be cool; lines of ticket holders waiting to get in. News articles from the movie's original release would be fun to read.
With a little more work, lyric options (.e.g. subtitles) could be made available. What would be really cool would remaining footage of the band coming on or off the stage or just puttzin' around between songs (even without the sound) inter-cut with current interviews of the band and any of the other key players of the day. Now that would be a significant upgrade.
Of course, the biggest bonus would be original footage and soundtracks to more songs in the show! “Starship Trooper” in its entirety seems like an obvious choice. Anything else that was played at that gig that didn’t make it in to the original would be phenomenal. (What else was performed at that gig? “Siberian Khatru”? “Heart of the Sunrise”?)
YESSONGS is a fun and energetic show to watch. Back then, the songs got played faster and faster as they went along. Rick was great at speeding up the tempo during his solo runs in “Heart of the Sunrise”. The audience were just trying to keep up! Yes really rocked the house and it’s captured so well in this movie.
One should remember that this was when the band was a big commercial success. Yes had succession of #1 albums beginning in this period. They had bigger audiences that knew all of their material. (An easier thing to do back then, unlike today’s YesFan who has nearly 20 albums to catch up on!) Yes’s tours were voted “This Year’s Concert Not To Miss!” more than once.
I was wondering, after YESSONGS, was 9012LIVE the next YesMovie? Jeez. All those years with just that one video. It’s so nice to have several to choose from now.
And though they made improvements in how they captured the picture and sound from the band’s more recent gigs, there’s nothing like the buzz you feel in their first movie!

The Yessongs DVD has no extras, nothing.

I was 16 years old in 1974 when Yessongs came out in theaters. I went back every weekend to see it for about a month. This was the most interesting music I had ever heard! They've been my favorite band since that first viewing.
While I agree the sound quality isn't the best there is (it was 1974 for Pete's sake), this DVD is a must have for YES fans.
Hey, I was going to those theater shows, too! One place had it along with Pink Floyd Pompeii. The green haze in the theater... those were the days.
I like the DVD as it is. The 1973 vintage adds to it. Do we want The Maltese Falcon colorized?

If I remember correctly from reading the Perpetual Change book, there was supposed to be a sequel to Yessongs in the form of an album and film.
With Atlantic seeing the success of first the album and then the release of the film in 1974, they decided to finance for a second Yessongs feature. It was to have been filmed on the Relayer tour in the summer of 1975. It was to be produced and directed by the same people who did the original Yessongs film (Peter Neal was the director I think) . There was some footage shot and shows were recorded. However, for some mysterious reason, production was put to an abrupt halt. Yessongs2, the film never came to be. The album would be put on hold for 5 years before it was released as Yesshows. The footages are now presumed lost. The band has no knowledge of where the location of the footage might be. The same goes for Atlantic.
The only closet thing that we do have to such thing of a Yessongs 2 would be The QPR dvd. As bad as the sound quality is, it is really the only closet thing to what could've been.

Yessongs is a movie that was released in theaters. It always was the version you got on the DVD.
Maybe more footage was taken but it was never released (since 1972-3!).

Yessongs (the movie) is very different from Yessongs (the album), unfortunately. I would LOVE to see the opening with Siberian Khatru and Heart Of The Sunrise on film. Close To The Edge is the same. That's about it.

well, i watched it yesteday and it sucked big time. oh well, ill just have to get some more DVDs that are better quality (video, sound, AND camera work and editing). the CDs are better than the video.
I understand, Plastic, but keep things in perspective. This is a vintage piece. Do we shun The Maltese Falcon because it's in black and white with mono audio?
The version of Close to the Edge is one of the best versions I have ever heard and we get to see it live. Remember, that song was NEW! The world had never experienced such a thing. Alan White had hardly been in the band for even one year! Rick Wakeman was inside of 2 years of making his mark on the music scene! The guys were all in their twenties! The Yes heritage would greatly suffer if this was never released.
We get spoiled by the glitz of MTV, however vacuous and shallow. Technically, ANY video by B. Spears is better than Yessongs. But that is merely a technical issue. 1973 had little to offer in the ways of music with video, but Yessongs was a shining moment.
Live in the moment of Yessongs and enjoy the unbridled passion of the first blush of Yes out of the starting gate. That 1st realization that the band was experiencing is irreplaceable!
In other words, what Mother would EVER throw out baby pictures?!?
