Manchester Evening News review:

JON Anderson and Rick Wakeman arrived armed with a raft of new songs from the former’s latest album The Living Tree, but the Yes bandmates are more than happy to trot out a few old favourites along the way.

They make a curious pair: Accrington-turned-American resident Anderson small, sparkly-eyed and full of the wonders of the universe, Wakeman tall, slightly shambling and never too far from a schoolboy joke.

The stage is scattered with candles and features no other personnel, just Anderson on vocals and guitar and Wakeman on keyboards. As the gig unfolds, the packed theatre treats every Yes classic such as Yours Is No Disgrace and Owner Of A Lonely Heart like an old friend, while warming to the newer, less familiar material. The banter is warm and witty, with Wakeman dipping ito his repartee from his later career as a Grumpy Old Man and in Countdown’s Dictionary Corner.

Many of Anderson’s newer songs are a little heavy on love, life, truth and peace, but Wakeman’s daft jokes and anecdotes mean things are never allowed to get too pretentious. The highlight is a rousing version of Yes’s Roundabout, the audience clapping and singing their hearts out, before rising as one for a standing ovation for their prog rock heroes.

That is generous, as it was a night that will only live long in the memory for hardened fans. However, it was entertaining and may this odd couple continue to create music and bad jokes for years to come.

Bolton News review:

OPENING with a couple of YES classics in the form of Starship Trooper and Sweet Dreams to get us in the mood, Prog-rock giants Anderson and Wakeman showed that there is indeed life after YES.

Anderson had a couple of guitars and his incredible, soaring voice whilst Wakeman used just two keyboards and managed to sound in parts like a concert orchestra.

Most of the duo’s latest album The Living Tree was given an airing (in fact they omitted just one track) and the song 23-24-11 about a soldier counting down the days until he goes home had added poignancy as it was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

There was of course the friendly banter between the two kindred spirits with Rick telling a few jokes and doing a bit of clowning around.

The music performed was sublime and the YES numbers were splendid in their stripped-down format, especially South Side Of The Sky and Turn Of The Century (after a couple of false starts).

The highlight of the YES numbers was a reggae version of their early song Time And A Word.

Ovations were also richly deserved for And You And I, Roundabout and Your Move which had the audience singing along.

The new tracks were proof that their music together is just as exciting, with The Living Tree and The Garden deserving special mention.

What a wonderful night: two men, two minds, but one spectacular musical vision.
