I will never forget the time they warmed up Rush on the Signals tour at Radio city Music hall, man the croud was rough on them... rush fans did NOT want to hear them...

I felt bad for them that night

I remember asking a friend what they thought of
the opening act for Rush around 1985.
He said.."Who?"

I replied.."Not The Who...They were called Marillion!"
Tongue firmly planted in cheek.

He said.."Ohhh..all the singer did was scream."

Huh?

:Wow:

Marillion is amazing with or without Fish. It always surprises me to hear people that just gave up when he left, in my opinion, it was just another beginning of great music.

And lol, poor guy, all those people yanking at his hair, they just couldn't let him go, could they? Marillion fans are much more polite these days, when H stage dives they eventually hoist him back up to the stage ;D

I didn't just give up on Marillion, I dutifully bought the first 2 CDs after he left and found them wanting. Didn't care for Hogarth's voice or lyrics. Sad really because they had the same guys on instruments. Here's an example. I had an old tape with "Season's End" on one side and "Vigil In a Wilderness of Mirrors" on the other side. At first I would listen to one then the other until finally I just kept fast forwarding through "Season's End" to get to the Fish album.

Admittedly I have not heard one note of their music after "Holiday in Eden" which just left me completely cold. I have everything Fish has released! I am willing to give some later Marillion a listen now but am not in a hurry to go find it.

The neat thing about both of these recordings,
Season's and Vigil is they both have discrete nods
towards The Jester in their respective artwork.

Seasons has the tip of his hat falling out the sky
in one panel on the front and Vigil has his costume
appearing to be thrown in a garbage barrel on the back cover.

Nope! No animousity there in either camp! (j/k)

I fully agree with your statement about Holidays in Eden.

I heard that and was like..."Oh...Alrighty then...Meh."

If you want to start somewhere with the H recordings,
try Brave.
It's a total concept album about a character's plummet
into total depression and near suicide and eventual
rising up and from....It's a good one. IMHO.

Cheers.

Holidays in Eden.
Their "pop" album as they refer to it - hmmmmmm
NAE their best it must be said but yeah, "BRAVE" is a corker - dark, daring and captivating.
Poor EMI didnae hae a clue what tae do with it :stretcher:
And cast an ear o'er Marbles if ye wanna try someting more recent [ish]

Then listen to this, it's from their 2004 album 'Marbles', to me the best Hogarth era Marillion song.

I think I gave up on Marillion with Fugazi. I'd seen them maybe ten times (first time in a small pub in London, supported by Pallas - about 50 people in the audience) and I think I just became bored of them. Shame really, some of those gigs had been great, one of the last was at Reading Festival in 1983, which was brilliant. When I heard Kayleigh and Lavender, I felt I'd made the right choice. Nowadays I'm wondering if I shouldn't go back and listen to some of their and Fish's other material. Maybe one day...

Thanks for the vid,

Read a good book about Marrillion years ago, and how excited fish was to get Andy in the band as he was a big fan of camel. Andy is a world class drummer, but things didn't work out and they had to sack him.

FIsh is one of the best llyricists in rock, along with Gabriel in my opinion.

Always like to put on the live at lorely DVD, a great performance. Fish left shortly afterwards and I never really bothered with them much after that.

Here is another I'm assuming, very rare Audio w/ pics attached...you tube of
Marillion performing at the Reading festival 1983.

(Notes)

August 27, 1983 Reading Rock Festival

Marillion played a great show that night. This is a little tribute.
They were at stage just before Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan in a heavy day. Nevertheless, Marillion was the best band that night.
Andy Ward, suposedly the band drummer, was introduced on percussion. Beside him another drummer: John Martyr on loan from the Bernie Marsden Group. This was in preparation for Andy's departure.
Line-up:
Fish - Vocals
Steve Rothery - Guitar
Peter Trewavas - Bass
Mark Kelly - Keyboards
John Martyr - Drums
Andy Ward - Percussion

This was the last Reading Festival at Little John's Farm.

I know Marillion went through (in their own words)
"A Spinal Tap of drummers before finding Ian Mosley!"

I have searched you tube looking for both Andy Ward and John Martyr performing with them.

This audio actually has them both!(?)
