actually looking at the new interactive thing at Jones beach, they basically have sold very very low for this show. Hopefully there is a decent walkup , which I believe is a possibility.

Funny thing, on sports station WFAN they have mentioned this tour almost daily - it's on the end of some add they do. The morning hosts were talking about going too. I think they were specifically promoting the PNC show.

It didn't look like I was gonna make this show, but circumstances had changed last week and I figured .. what the hell.. especially after I got an email from Live Nation/Ticketmaster, announcing they were dropping those "service fees" for many of the ampitheater shows.

so for $29.00 I'm seeing Yes & Peter Frampton...and a pretty good seat too, and judging from what I was seeing at the website.. there were plenty of seats still available... but this seems to be the case with the concert biz all over the place this year...

Yes is Yes.. I know what I'm getting, which is nothing new but still ... it's Yes.. I've never seen Frampton, and have heard and read great things about him in concert, so this a great bonus gig for me..

would love to meet up with everyone here who's going.. had a blast meeting up with you all back at Westbury last year.

It was so wonderful seeing you guys once again. It was such a joy drinking Margaritas out of Bee's infamous Yes Thermos cooler thing....

I have heard tall tales about this rotating jug of joy.

The show was great, hearing Perpetual change was cool. I think the last time I heard that was on the Talk tour, I think. CTTE was nice to hear and Steve realy ripped it up on YIND. The only thing I didn't like was the sound, once again. It took the sound guys a song or two to get it down but still, i found that squires bass was to low and there were a few microphones on Alan's kit that they never got right all night long. Maybe it was where I was sitting and the way the sound travels in that kind of outdoor arena, I don't know. Whats sad is that I think Frampton had a better sound that Yes, But all in all it was a great show. As for the vocals, I have seen this line up 4 times and out of all the shows I like this the least. David did a good gob but I have seen him do better when it comes to Yesmusic.

Just before the show I took one last walk by the beach, just to the left of the arena and I saw these two women. They had "on the silent wings of freedom" playing on there portable radio. At one point I turned to one of them and said "hey, got any candy -floss" and the lady on the left just looked at me with complete disgust and agner. Oh well..

An awesome shoutout goes to BEE who was so kind to upgrade my ticket (my seat was in sec 12L and he was kind enough to give me his other sec C orchestra seat... which was like 5th row.. great view of Oliver and Chris...and felt Chris's rumbling bass!!)

Thanks once again!!

caught most of Frampton's set... wasn't dissapointed, him and his band sounded great..

now to Yes... They were ON last night...

from the opening of Tempus Fugit to the rousing finish of Starship Trooper... CTTE was a highlight as well. Steve, Chris, Alan, Oliver and Benoit were all in great form.

Due to other committments, we weren't able to pre-show. We gt there just a few minutes before Frampton's set started. Great show. Frampton has a very tight band and they played with enthusiasm. Frampton was very engaging. A lot of folks missed much of his act - it was defnitely a late arriving crowd. They missed a great show. Frampton is now on the "must see again" list.

There was a pretty decent sized crowd for the Yes show. The Roger Dean graphics on the multiple screens were cool. It was, for me, not one of their best shows. They took quite a few songs to get it together. I have to say that Benoit didn't pull his weight this time around. He improved as the show went on, but I saw a lot of folks get up and leave during the first few songs - there was definitely something missing. YIND and And You and I were not anywhere near what this lineup is capable of.

Having said that - the best surprise was how Oliver has become completely at ease and how well he played. It helped that he was up in the mix properly this time.

Perpetual Change was great and CTTE made the concert for me. I thought these was both done excellently. Benoit got it together and was the way I had seen him at previous shows. So, a mixed bag, but a YES concert always gives you something to remember and this one did. Trudes and our three daughters came with me and that seeing the girls enjoy the show as much as they did was great.

First time I’ve seen Yes without Jon. Have been going to Yesshows since 1974 at Nassau Coliseum. Saw them here and at MSG in 2004.

My 2 cents:

- Steve is definitely the heart of the band now. Oliver and Benoit seem to still be settling into their roles, and Chris and Alan are always steady, but Steve really stood out.
- Too bad that Oliver didn’t get a chance to stretch and do a solo spot, although when he did get a chance to wail on Starship Trooper (encore) he did so admirably.
- Sound: maybe it’s the acoustics of the site, but the kick drum was too powerful (this affected Peter Frampton’s set as well – perhaps there was a resonant frequency) and tended to overwhelm the bass. From where I sat, Steve was well represented in the mix, but Oliver and Benoit were mixed to far back too often.
- The most poignant moment of the night for me was Steve’s solo, which was centered around the “Leaves of Green” section of “The Ancient”. (Disclaimer: I am a total TFTO fan – if I won the lottery I would pay millions to have it performed at Radio City or Carnegie with Jon, Steve, Alan and the Kodo Drum collective and a full orchestra) After his solo, Steve said something about Jon, but he said it so low that I couldn’t understand. Later on, he said something again between songs. If anyone heard what he said, please post!

Overall, a good show. The weather cooperated, the moon came out somewhere in the middle of CTTE I think, and Benoit and Oliver are great additions to the band- but- for me, the heart is missing without Jon.

Sorry, I don’t mean to be a downer, but I can’t deny my feelings about this. I really got the impression that it’s affecting Steve as well. Comments?

Alright well. First off , nice time seeing the Yes fans. I always enjoy seeing everybody. A pleasure.

Now on to the show.

Frampton - I think from what I have read here, that Frampton was definitely a plus. The crowd was appreciative of him, his band was very good, and I thought the sound was good. I sat closer to the sound guys, so...take that for what it's worth. - I do agree the Bass for both shows was not that audible, I heard it clear at the end of Starship.

Yes ....

(Let me just note, I am behind the band, and I will continue to pay my hard earned money to see them as I have every tour multiple times since 1984 ...and- in the future and if and when the ice age comes and they put out new music, I will buy it. )

A *good* attendance for Yes...I was surprised, and definitely as Homer mentioned, they were there for Yes. Lots came in at the end of or after Frampton. I expected a decent walk up, but this was better than I expected. I would say they have done the job of building up the fan base again. The test will be for after this, because , I think there are still a lot of people who do not know Jon is not with the band. (the people behind me didn't know....but most must know he's not there right???)

Lots of Yes t's being sold in the parking lot. Steve Howe mentioned that Yes hadn't been there in 6 years, and I was like " Oh yeah...it has been that long, wow!"

The Show ....

I was surprised at the low energy for the Firebird entry. Why the energy for Frampton and not Yes? Were people like "let's see what this is gonna be like?"... or were they tired and hot....or what?) I used to get chills when they came out to that even with this lineup, but this time, low energy , no chills. The crowd was dead. But whatever.

Tempus Fugit, did not sound good to me. The tempo was too slow and it is definitely not the song to open with. Beniot surprisingly was not good here. This surprised me because I thought this/he was especially good in the smaller places, and Machine Messiah was even better.

Funny thing YIND had good tempo and they have slowed that down at times. And You and I , this was probably the performance with the least energy from the crowd I had ever experienced. Maybe it was the anti-climatic way Squire introduced it , maybe it was it's placement in the set ....whatever. No juice. I was bored. There were moments in the early parts that were cringe worthy, and bored me ...this is troubling for me, but it picked up.... The band was ok, but I didn't feel like they were delivering it.

I thought the first song that was good was Perpetual Change - the band was pretty good there. I was thinking that the early parts of this track are in Benoits range. Funny enough I thought the best crowd reaction up to a point was for "Owner."

Oliver is most improved, they should really allow him to fly more.

Benoit should not address the crowd. haha. Keep it to Chris.

As far far as Beniot, I think the larger venues are showing his limitations. (the band overall is re-adjusting to playing the bigger places I think). There are certain songs for his range, some not. Perpetual change he did very well, CLose the Edge pretty good, unitll he went too high on that last "I GET UP ---I GET DOWWWWWWWWWN" the first run in the middle section, ....cringe worthy moment..... He did better the second shot, but stay in your range my man.

I actually thought he was mixed well into things the first three times I saw this band. Playing the Larger venues again is causing a need for adjustment. Beniot is really decent when he sings his own way, and doesn't try to imitate Jon.

The big thing now is to see if the crowds come back.....they must release new music.

Alan White needs to be miked better or something..... unless they are not miking him on purpose..and if they are doing that then they should get a second supporting drummer...... Other than that, I thought the sound was powerful enough for the venue and at times the band did jack it up.

I loved the video shots, and the use of the best logo in rock. Love that, keep it going.

Upon Leaving the show most people seemed satisfied, I would of liked to see what others were saying. The Lady behind me who didn't know Jon wasn't gonna be there still thought they were "phenomenal" so I guess that's pretty good huh?

In the end, when they come back , I'll be there.

I have to agree with the previous reviews about this show. Frampton was great. This is not surprising to us, since we have seen him 3 other times over the past couple of years. His band is very good as well.

As for Yes, I thought it was a good performance, although I've seen this lineup do better. The sound was average at best. Again it could be where we were sitting (Orch C row N) but the sound quality was better for Frampton. Perpetual Change. CTTE and Steve's solo from the Ancient were the highlights. It was great to see Steve attacking on the intro part of CTTE, which is a change from what we've seen in past shows from a few years back. Oliver really impressed me. He seems very comfortable with his parts, excellent solos all night. Benoit had an up and down kind of night. He sounded awesome in CTTE (I get up, I get down part), very powerful. On other songs though, he had some pitch problems. I don't think the vocal parts from Chris were as strong as they usually are. In all fairness though they were still good. Maybe it was the sound mix or the fact that this was their 4th show in a row which can take its toll.

We still had a great night at Jones Beach. An average to good Yes show is still better than seeing any other band live in their top form.

I agree (except change the date to 1974). Yes is still the best, has the deepest catalog and bench of any band.

One other note of interest: Steve's entire amp kit appears to be a single Line 6 amp. There were 2 on stage, but one appeared to be a spare. Looks like his axe setup has been pared down to the Gibson 175 (did I get that right?), an acoustic, a Line 6 Variax and the venerable Fender slide. Amazing the amount of sound he gets out of that.

To hangtail for jumping me after the show.....it's not what you're thinking..my battery was dead from tailgaiting. To Joey for great seats and Mikey for taking me by the hand to the front. Bee for the Margie's out of the infamous YES jug and Chris for teaching me how to open a bottle with a lighter cause silly me didn't bring a bottle opener !!

---YES...well was pretty much YES without JON. Sorry the magic is ditto most of the show for me. My 4th show without and I am lost...still. I thought I would get over it but nope.

--- Musicality-- Steve always on... slight delay only with timing on AYAI second chorus......but it may have been Benoit. Benny didn't have any issues this go round with lyrics he finally has them mastered. He has seemed to come into his own with regard to developing himself in the band...he no longer sounds like a wanna be JON clone...he has his own "style" now. I am still not sold... The harmonizing was flawless and beautiful...so nice to see that again. The sound from where I was was very loud Benny and ALAN in the beginning was mixed very low but seemed to get better. Chris was way toned down compared to previous shows. The set was wayyyy to short. Loved CTTE....pure genious. LOVED the big screen Dean graphics. I got awesome footage of a CHRIS/STEVE moment I will post later. Oliver...low key as ever but good.
Perpetual Change tempo slower in the beginning but picked up and was brilliant. Owner..the 1 time the audience showed a pulse...Steves solo "The Ancient" I loved !! closing out with Starship Trooper...another popular one with the audience.
I have been to jones beach a bunch and the sound is good/bad/fair/poor depending on where you are and how the wind is blowing...it's just the nature of the theatre.

I have some cool pix to post later...some small footage I have to DL....

Thats my 2cents overall a B- ......seen them do better

I don't remember Steve saying anything about Jon...he mentioned Trevor Horn and kind of mumbled about when he left the band after the drama project and went on to produce 90125.

--- Musicality-- Steve always on...

I thought Steve was amazing last time I saw him in Westbury last year sometime, playing for Asia and Yes both nights.

I thought he was missing notes all over the place last night. Good energy, lots of sound (the "Leaves of Green" part was especially good), but that's what it sounded like to me. Lots of missed or dead notes.

Call me crazy.

So does anyone know what Steve said about Jon during his solo spot???? I'm very interested in hearing.

After "Leaves of Green" I believe he said:
"that was from the 3rd side of Tales, a piece of the Ancient. We did 7 other long pieces in the 70s with Trevor Horn and with Jon...Machine Messiah, Gates of Delirium, Awaken...(hesitates)...and the other 3 sides of Tales".
He looked like he was going to say more but decided that we would know what the 8th one was....as the birdies began to chirp and fly around, the monitors turned green and the fog floated across the stage!

Some background: I'm new to the forum and it has been many years since I have been to a Yes concert. In High School in the 70's I was a very big fan and had seem them several times at MSG. Well I thought it would be nice to get back into the music, so I took out my old Yes albums and it brought back great memories. I was very pumped up for the show at Jones Beach.

First off I though Peter Frampton was awesome. I was saying to my self, he is going to be a tough act to follow. He was very engaging with the crowd and his band was spot on. He hasn't lost his voice or his guitar skills. I highly recommend seeing him and would have no problem paying for a ticket just to see him perform.

So onto YES. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did. I had mixed expectations after reading the reviews on Yesfans of previous shows. But I was not dissapointed. I tried not to over analyize them and just enjoyed what they brought. Considering their age, they could still bring it. I think playing in NY they realized they had to provide a good show. And I was impressed with both Oliver and Benoit. I only wish they would include more music from Going for the One and Tormato. I will definitely see them again if they are in the area.

Going for the One has some of the most difficult vocal parts (in terms of range) of any Yes album, for both Jon and Chris. They tried Parallels early on with Benoit, and it didn't work. So I doubt this lineup will be attempting anything from GFTO. I wish they would consider Onthe Silent Wings of Freedom.

Great show, great fans, great venue. Only wish the big screens featured more Squire....that guy has serious stage presence.

The new singers lilt and arrangement of Yours Is No Disgrace was really nice. A more plaintive, somber resolution ... beautifully done.

Comments?

too bad you weren't at the PNC bank arts center show.

they were awesome!
i think jones beach venue is my least fave venue..
i am seeing "the wall" with roger waters there because i can't see the PNC show, and i am starting to regret that jones beach is where im going to see this show...

They're human, and it showed. Nobody delivers a perfect set every night. Steve Howe has always played some missed notes and some dead notes, but it's because he's always trying new variations.

Benoit David is a non-issue. He's how it is. "This is now Yes", as Chris said. He's singing the music accurately, and everybody knows the score. His voice is stronger and a little more opaque in tone than Jon's, but he's a different human being; there's a different set of pipes behind that microphone now. My verdict: Accept him. The core band got the best guy they could find, and he's fine.

I honestly thought they got a little lost in a couple of the really kinky bits, like that last...jeez, how do you put these things if you're not a musician, and you don't have the charts in front of you? I think they got lost during the last really busy part before the end section of "Perpetual Change". BTW, "Perpetual Change" should be played every time something happens to the lineup.

I was very pleased that Oliver was mixed louder this time than on past "ITP"-lineup shows. I agree with others who've said they should feature him a bit more, one way or another.

I agree with other posts that Chris wasn't loud enough, and that both for Frampton and Yes, the bass drum was too loud. Maybe it is a Jones Beach thing. The harmonies were surprisingly good, which has not always been the case with any lineup.

Peter Frampton was excellent. Opening with a Humble Pie number was a clear statement of "I've still got it", and was not unfounded. His playing and singing, and his band and the two new songs were outstanding. I am moved to download some of his new album.

Back to Yes: On the whole, you're only as good as your newest music. Let's hear it, fellas.:headset:

Alan White needs to be miked better or something.....

Well, sadly I would wholeheartedly agree with this post. I said the show was great but still, I give it a solid 6.5 out of 10. Out of all 4 shows I have seen with this line up, this one had a strange feel to it, my least favorite. Maybe it was the sound, maybe the heat, I don't know. I get a sence that many Yesfans are salivating over the thought of Jon and Rick coming back someday.

The over all energy of the crowd was a bit strange to me.

After standing out in the heat for hours maybe it would have been nice to buy an ice cold beer inside, catch a little buzz, sit back and anticipate Yes coming out on stage but NO! We are treated like children and forced to buy some lame soda for a rediculous amout of money. I love when Yesfans are all jacked up before and during a show, it adds to the fun and energy. I'm sure there were many Yesfans who were hot and would have loved a few ice cold beers. What is sad is that I remember when they did sell beers at Jones beach and they were a rediculous 10 or 12 bucks.. pathetic.

I'm, not sure if I will go back to that venue. I love the location and it is beautiful but I don't like the way they run it. Speaking of beautiful, when that amazing moon came out during Close to the edge, it blew my mind. One of the highlights for me of the night. You folks that sat close up to the stage didn't have the chance to see when it first came out... wow.... beautiful. It was us lame Yesfans with the cheap seats that got to see that moonrise.

Another highlight for me was stopping at Whitecastle on the right home... yum. It was a late night bold move for me, I stopped at the one just off the bruckner expressway in the bronx. You new yorkers know where I'm talking about, it was late at night and hot, lots of people just standing around. Like I said , it was a bold move but worth it.

I sence a change coming in Yes..

I don't think so, I didn't see any. Maybe if you dumped out enough money for a VIP pass maybe there was availability for some beer... maybe. Us little people are forces to pay almost 5 frigin dollars for a small lame ass candy bar.

Of corse you can TRY and drink a few before the show in the parking lot but don't let the gestapo see you, god for bid you have a good time.

If Jones Beach had 6 dollar beers, they would have made far more money than what they made on popcorn and candy and maybe the croud would have had a better time. Where I sitting, nobody bought anything... many Yesfans thirsty. Screw Jones Beach.. no beer and the sound sucks there.

Strange feel is right. Jones beach has that ability for some odd reason, although I have been to Yes shows with good feel there, the last time I saw them there was 2000 for the Masterworks tour. Since then the JB dates were a conflict so i have seen them at Radio City and the PNC. The PNC has much better vibe. Of course for me , the beach is only 30 mins away if that, PNC, about 1:40.

Yeah, it's a state park. That's why. But you are right, pretty sure the VIP dudes get beer in vip area. Once again PNC way better for this.

I saw it , that was awesome, and one of the cool things about seeing a show there. During the Masterworks tour, the moon came out during "soon" (I think that was the track) and Jon mentioned it, what a moment!

I thoroughly enjoyed the show. I have seen this lineup 3 times and Oliver has gotten better each time. The first time around you could barley hear him but now he was terrific! On roundabout, to quote Dewey Fin from the School of Rock, the keyboard solo blew that classical music out your backside.
Anyway anytime Steve Chris and Alan share the stage its going to be a good night.
Benoit is a terrific understudy, but I do miss Jon though I hope the next time he will be out there.
