I really like this song, but I may be alone in this view. The Tormato album has some good stuff on it but is also quite patchy. However, this track should be played live as it is a classic.

I love FUTURE JOICE/RETIMES !!!
I was lucky enough to see them play it 3 times in 78 & 79. Wish they would revive it. It's been more than ten true summers since they have played it!

I agree with that
Good Song
Great Classic
Outstanding "Live"
 It's great, it's a classic, should be played live (together with Rejoice, IMHO).

Really good, but even better live. Rob you make me green with envy. I would have loved to see them play it live, but that was before I was introduced to Yes.

I'd love to see it on the live box set, but I'd love for that whole tour to be on there. The Tormato material, to me, was so much better live.
I've heard a lot of Tormato live, but I've never had Future Times/Rejoice live. I bet it'd sound great, but on Tormato, I gave it an average.

It's good, but without Rejoice it's a bit lonely.

I can't imagine FUTURE TIMES without REJOICE. I think REJOICE would work without FUTURE TIMES but not the other way around. Still I see the two as ONE SONG that should always be together.

I voted for great, because I really like it and I hope these kind of songs will be part of the live box too. And yes, I think Rejoice is a part of this song.
I was just mentioning this tune on another thread. As the opener for a new release, this sold me on Tormato from the first notes. Fortunately, no Internet or MTV meant that music was judged on its owm merits. The last pre-MTV Yes release.
Think about this song. Right after the instrumental intro, the "verse" starts. Isn't it just one of the most happy soundscapes that Yes has ever produced? Just pure joy and innocence.
When Tormato first came out, I didn't realize Future Times and Rejoice were separate songs. I saw them open with this on the Tormato Tour and they played both. Grrrrrreat! It is a great tune.
It may only be artistic license to have 2 titles. Has anyone ever found out from the creators if these are 2 songs? Not until this forum did I hear of 2 songs!

I have always regarded Future Times/Rejoice as two parts of one song - much in the way that Starship Trooper has three distinct sections etc. And I believe it is possibly one of the most underrated Yes songs in their catalogue. I would love to see them revive it.

I love "Future Times/Rejoice". Not only is it a fun tune, it's also rather psychedelic. :hippy:
I've always loved TORMATO. I don't see where it's "patchy". I’ve never understood the criticism against it. I’ve always thought it was much stronger than GOING FOR THE ONE. True, GFTO has "Awaken" and that’s brilliant, but that’s it. "Wonderous Stories" and "Turn of The Century" aren’t better than "Madrigal" and "Onward". (Hell, it was years before I even liked "Turn of the Century".) The title cut, "Going For The One", isn’t better than "Future Times/Rejoice" or "Arriving UFO". "Parallels" isn’t better than "On the Silent Wings Of Freedom" or "Release Release". I like "Circus of Heaven" (again, one of Yes’s more psychedelic numbers.) The only TORMATO track I’ve never really cared for is "Don't Kill The Whale", and even that's not too bad. So I have to ask, how is it that TORMATO gets slagged constantly while GOING FOR THE ONE is universally praised? It should be the other way ‘round!

P.S. I've always wanted to hear a (studio clean) edit separating "Future Times" from "Rejoice". I enjoy hearing things out of context. It can often be a surprising experience. How about separating the main section of "Don’t Kill The Whale" from its finale, "Cetacea"? That would be interesting, too.

I am old enough to have seen the Tormato tour , which was when they used the revolving stage. Re Tormato V Going For The One. I would say Don't Kill the Whale and Silent Wings of Freedom let Tormato down but I like all of GFTO. Turn of the Century is great and includes Steve Howe's most effective 12 string acoustic playing. I've never really liked the Whale song and Wings is nearly a great song but loses its way towards the end.

I've always thought "Turn of the Century" was sort of weak - particularly in the use of the name "Roan" (sp?). It always sounded really lame. (My apologies to anyone with this name.) I've also felt that the story this song tells is just some cheap soap-opera, dramatic fluff not suitable for a band of this caliber. It's these sort of stories and lyric threads that earn Jon the “lightweight” image that many project on him. (I don't feel that way myself and have spent many hours convincing others not to see him that way, but you know what I mean.)
I agree that there are some great instrumental passages in this work - particularly where Steve's 12-string is concerned. Perhaps an instrumental version would appeal to me more.

P.S. I remember reading somewhere about a fan who road in the car with Steve (I can’t, for the life of me, remember what the whole situation was.) While driving, Steve popped in a cassette mix of GOING FOR THE ONE without any vocals! Now that’s what I would call a cool bootleg!!:ignore:

Future Times/Rejoice is one of my all-time favorites... There's nothing else quite like it: even by YES. I love the imagery of the song, the music is so interesting: everyone is playing something different, yet it meshes perfectly!
Hope they put a live version on the boxed-set: Cleveland 1978 would be a good one (plus, there's a good soundboard recording of that performance!).
A definate 'classic' in my book!

Definately. I do concurr with Earl. I love Future Times/Rejoice. It simply lifts me up and sends me flying from the first note. Artistically, I often prefer it to GFTO. Its energy and joyful quality is very reminiscent of pre-CTTE YES. Truly uplifting ! REJOICE!

I have just got a copy of the yes orchestral cd and that has some interesting non vocal interpretations of things like heart of the sunrise, close to the edge and soon. I would be an idea for some remixes to be issued with the bass picked out or the keyboards. Frank Zappa's back catelogue has numerous interpretations of the same song and I don't see why Yes can't do the same.

I guess it depends on your definition of what is a 'classic'?

Classic? Mmmmm .... don't know about that. But it's bloody great!

Who the hell found this thread from 2003? LOL I was thinking it was a new thread, but the poll was closed and I thought "how unfair". Anyway, I would have voted "good" from the poll choices given. Probably would have voted "really good" if there was one (Australian translation bloody good?)
I love the military snare drum and the synths on this song. I like at least one other song from Tormato better (OTSWOF)

You make a lot of great points, although I like GFTO better. As a whole, I liked where that album takes me. Something about the Swiss Alps (or wherever they recorded that) as opposed to the whole Tormato, tomato splat and Yes Tor thing. GFTO, to me, is a much stronger vibe. I like Parallels better than a lot of songs off Tormato, as well. To me, Tormato ushered in a little too much goofey so-called mysticism. Like they were charactures of themselves. I also don't like the production on Tormato. A little too sugary and plastic, not to mention parts where Rick's keyboards are a little too much.
I wouldn't really consider "Circus of Heaven" psychedelic either. I mean, a case could be made that it would sound great under the effects of LSD, but I've probably listened to every note of Yes, at some point, under the sacred kaleidoscope, but sometimes, even in that state you go, "whatever, next."
With that said, I think "Future Times/Rejoice" is absolutely great, although I never much cared for "Don't Kill the Whale."
