View Full Version : Keys DVD overdubs
I was watching the Keys DVD. I noticed in many spots where the video does not coincide with the audio, and vice-versa.
-Many places with vocal harmony but only Anderson is singing.
-Wakeman video at Awaken opening cuts between 2 different performances
-Guitar in Siberian does not sync with the video
-There are more instances
I wonder if they just took the best audio and just synced up various video. Even so, I'm thinking they even added tracks to the best audio.

I wondered this myself when I last watched Keys but I don't know the answer.

I had heard that in some cases they dubbed in audio from one night with video of the other, or visa-versa. Basically in an attempt to get the best quality of both.

I've known that they simply put the CD audio with various video footage, and those stupid image effects!!! :-(
That DVD is for me an amateur concert video, they threw away an incredible chance to put together a masterpiece video!!

The overdubbing was most likely done in the studio. Chris’s "phantom harmonies" are the most obvious. He’s not even standing near his microphone, let alone moving his lips. Jon’s voice is occasionally doubled (an important studio technique for "fattening up" a lead vocal line.) Sometimes it’s been replaced - including when he got the words wrong.
I, personally, don’t mind that studio "tricks" were used to improve the sound. I just wish it weren’t so obvious (again, the shot(s) of Chris not even standing next to his microphone.) For the purists out there, there are bootlegs of each of the three nights (not that I have any) for those who prefer their recordings "unspoiled".
