I really enjoy TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS...and OPEN YOUR EYES took me quite a while to warm up to. I used to hate it, but now I think it's got its' moments. It won't ever be one of my favorites though.
I really liked UNION when it first came out. I was surprised to hear that the band weren't happy with it. There's at least 6 tracks on that one that I'd love to see them bring to the stage.
Although I'm basically into the Yes line-ups with Steve Howe I also enjoy the Trevor Rabin period. To me it's not the Yes I fell in love with, but it's like a band within a band. For me it was the best music the 80's had to offer apart from what the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull and Bob Dylan were doing at the time. 90125, 9012LIVE, BIG GENERATOR and TALK are all quite decent albums - just don't go there expecting 'Awaken' or 'Close To The Edge'...it's not that kind of Yes!
I find that I'm quite happy with whatever YES conjures up! That's why I'm so interested in them.
My least favorite Yes album? SOMETHING'S COMING a/k/a BEYOND AND BEFORE (in the US). I love the performances but wish it sounded better. The sound quality of these BBC recordings is probably one of the worst of any artist's BBC albums.

I can't say that there is a Yes album that I absolutely hate. Even if I don't like every track, there are tracks (or, in the case of Tales, sections) that I enjoy.

I'm sure we all have our least favourite Yes album but I think every one of them has something to offer.
Therefore, I can't say I HATE any.

Spot on. In my opinion, Big Generator, Union and Open Your Eyes are weaker and less substantial albums than the majority, but they all have something to offer. In fact, I had a major downer on BG until I came to this site and I've gradually re-evaluated it and now think that Final Eyes and I'm Running are excellent tracks and even the poppier 'Love' songs are better than I remembered them.
I played Union in the car yesterday. If I strip away the horrible associations of that albums production it's an enjoyable work. Same with OYE, I would never hold it up as an example of Yes's excellence but I can certainly listen to it and derive enjoyment from doing so.
Anything by Yes is worthwhile, otherwise I wouldn't be here.
I just wish they'd let somebody here co-ordinate the forthcoming Live collection and give the fans what they want
Even the worst Yes product has hidden gems. Tormato has Onward and Silent Wings ... OYE has New State of Mind ... Union has Miracle of Life ...

I guess I just miss the point of a thread like this.
Sure, we all have some songs or albums we like and some we don't. But, isn't it all just a matter of personal opinion? I don't like chanting and one-note-samba kind of lyrics very much. But, other people here do and have said as much. That's fine with me. I'm trying to get to like them, too. Nothing like expanding your horizons.
Personally, I'm trying to be resolved not to be as negative as I've been in the past. I've already had the Internet kill my joy in one form of entertainment. I'm not anxious for it to happen again.

big generator

All Yes albums have some good moments. Union is the most despised album by both band and fans. If someone wants to save something from it, it's usually the Rabin tracks. No way!. Many of the ABWH songs are terrific. It's a shame that J. Elias spoiled the party with too many sessioners, but the compositions are superb: IWHWFE, WHYCSTD, Silent Talking, Holding on are much better than anything published in 1991.

i agree-hate is a strong word.. i save that word for irresponsible people and idiot politicians.
i suppose my least favorite is big generator..i just never got into that lp..too much 'machine' reference for me..not enough soul slamming spirit-touching stuff that i have come to expect from our guys..[i am not saying it was bad-just not my cup of tea]
on the other hand, it was the first concert i took my little brother to, and, even tho i didnt enjoy that album much, it WAS great to see my baby bro having a good time at his first yesshow..he LOVES that album to this day..
i just realized [another thread, huh?] that i have seen yes in all its incarnations, and have seen them with all three of my brothers in three 'different eras', as you guys say..now, to get my sister in there someday...

I don't hate any Yes Albums. Some are average quality, but none are that bad. I don't even hate any of their individual songs though there are some that I like to skip.
Even Yes at their worst is far better than much of the garbage that is otherwise available.

Here another one who doesn't hate any Yes album. Up till now I think OYE is my least favorite, but even on that album I can find songs that are to my likings, such as New State of Mind. As strange it may sound to a lot of Classic Yes fans, also Tales is not among my favorite albums, I love RSOG and Ritual, but the others two epics I just can't get into, no matter how I try. And another surprise for me personaly, I pulled BG out of the closet two weeks ago and have been playing it a few time since and I don't seem to dislike it as much as I thought I did, Shoot High Aim Low, Final Eyes, I'm Running and even the title song I like now.
I think taste can change with time. The greatest example for me in that is that when Talk came out, I didn't like it at all an now, nine years later, it's one of my favorites, along with CTTE, Fragile, the Yes album and Magnification........

Well - for the record - I don't HATE any Yes album!
Any Yes album is so much better than the alternatives!
That said, my least favorite is Big Generator.
I've heard Tales and Drama mentioned on people's lists - they are among my favorites. Tales especially.
For those of you who don't like Tales - relax, get stoned, have some wine - your method of choice. Then put it on end-to-end. Let the music take you places you've never been before. Enjoy!

Sam You Made The Pants Too Long (7:45)
Leader Of The Pack (3:56)
Sea Cruise (2:21)

side 2:
Meet The Flintstones (12:59)
Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand In The Snow) (11:03)
Jon Anderson - lead vocals, percussion
Steve Howe - plastic toy guitar, vocals
Chris Squire - cardboard box with thick rubber bands on it, vocals
Rick Wakeman - accordian
Alan White - coffee cans, shoeboxes, bed springs, spoons
Special guest Johnny Mathis on alto kazoo and vocal duet with Jon on 'Poor Butterfly'

I feel the same...sure, some are better than others, but I don't think there are any bad ones....
As far as the albums in question:
Big Generator: Probably my least Favorite, but still a very good album...Final Eyes, I'm Running, Holy Lamb (Which should have been longer) are standouts to me
Talk: Certainly my favorite Rabin era album...the Calling & Endless Dream are CLASSICS in my book...
Union: a little uneven, but some fantastic songs...I Would Have Waited..., Shock to the System, Lift Me Up, Miracle of Life, etc...
Open Your Eyes: I actually really enjoy this album! No epics, but Great music! New State of Mind, OYE, Universal Garden, Fortune Seller, etc...
Tales From Topographic Oceans(this album is so boring)....OK Honestly...not in my top 10 Yes albums....But RSOG, and Ritual floor me (Maybe I need to hear the other two played live to appreciate them better).
90125(I don't actually hate this album it's actually good but it's not a good yes album): I think I see what you are saying, but of course it wasn't originally intended to be Yes. IMO, the weakest track is OOALH, but even it isn't bad...

I don't know how old you are - but all 4 movements were played at Georgia Tech Coliseum 2/11/74. It was a phenomenal show.
However, I loved Tales from the first listen - was so thrilled that a new Yes album was out - and a double album to boot!

Not quite old enough...lol...I am 34 and My 1st Yesshow was in 1987. I got into Yes in the early 80s, before 90125. It wasn't Drama that I heard first though(I didn't hear it until about 87)...my 1st Yes Album was Yessongs. I just need to hear some live recordings of The Remembering & The Ancient, though to more fully appreciate them.

Perhaps a blasphemous statement to make but I stopped buying YES albums after OYE. I like OYE well enough but it didn't inspire me to go on with their new material after it came out. Up to that release, BG is my least favorite. As for Tormato, heck I bought the lp, cassette, and Japanese pressing of the CD (at extortionate price in '88!). Love the Taurus sounds Chris contributes to that album! I like 'em all (save for BG) and still spin them frequently. Yup, even Drama, Talk and Union. ;)

Well TTT, if you quit buying Yes albums after OYE, you missed two of the best ones!
The Ladder is fantastic - a beautiful celebration of life, done in numerous musical styles. Showcases the talents of Yes beautifully.
Magnification - what can I say? To me this is a classic, from the title track to the profound In the Presence Of - the theme is love, the symphony enhances but doesn't overwhelm the music. I love this album!
TTT - Give these a try!

OK I can't stand this one...
HATE and YES album in the same sentence ?????
YES albums are like days, some are better than others...I usually need to listen to a new one at least 20 times before I get to like it. At first I think that I'm not going to like it and then it starts growing on me...
As for Tales I can't believe anybody does not like that album !!! It is one of the greatest of all time...It goes from one extreme to the other...I remember the first time I heard it ...When it was over I said WHAT .. Then I just kept playing it over and over ... If you don't like Tales try listening to it 10 or 20 more times...It worked for me .................

Starcastle, LOL- now THERE'S a band I haven't heard in a long time. A long time. Thanks for the reminder. Heheheh, what a funny band.
That said, I am completely shocked and amazed that anyone can be a Yes fan and hate Tales. Tales is probably my favorite Yes album, but even if it wasn't- it doesn't get any more "Yes" than Tales! CTTE, Fragile, The Yes Album, Tales.
I think the worst is Drama, to be cliche.

Absolutely SallyKhatru! I can't say that I hate any Yes album...
A ridiculous concept.
What's to hate about YES? Nothing. It's all good, hell: the best. YES is one of those sublime wonders in a world that is too often filled with things of inconsequence.
Pure artfulness: There's nothing to hate about anything related to YES.
I hate it when a Yesshow is over... But even then: there's always the NEXT Yesshow! And the warm afterglow.
But hate a YES album? No way!

I try my best to not use "HATE" for anything.--I do "Extremely dislike" some things.
Although it seems that DRAMA and OYE's are the least liked YES tries, I am going to confess that after giving DRAMA quite a few listens in the past week, It really has some pretty good jam.--I still can't get past the lead vocals though!
Gotta have Jon in there!
I've alway's liked OYE's.--It just seems to not have enough kick to it.
It's more suited for elevator music.--Still, it is good listening.
Excluding some of the solo stuff, I would just mark it as an "Unleaded" YES album.

I "HATE" Starcastle!(only kidding).
Hello TRUEYOUTRUEME!--Good to speak with you for the first time!--Welcome!
I forgot to mention on the previous post that DRAMA kind of reminds me of Starcastle.--Mainly of the lead vocals.
I heard them recently on a archive radio station.
I actually thought that I was listening to some unreleased YES.
They actually are a pretty good group of musicians.
Why do I extremely dislike them?--I saw them open up for a Jethro concert in Denver back around 77-78. Hours before the concert, I was driving around and some radio station was interviewing them live and they did say that YES was their biggest influence,(which is the ultimate compliment), but, they also said that they thought that they were better than YES. I didn't take that too kindly.
At the concert, they were set up exactly like YES sets up, and each member of this group were emulating movements of YES members.(kind of like me singing into the closet door handle with my tennis racket when I was about 9-10 years old trying to be the Beatles).--I have to admit though, that they did YES a lot better than I did Beatles.---Is Starcastle still playing?
Thanks TRUE!--Good evening to you sir!!

Yeah, me too... I don't "hate" any of their records. I do think some of them are uneven, or "just OK" but "hate" is too strong a word.
Actually, the phrase I find myself using for the Yes albums further down on the favorites list is "has potential". I guess Union, Open Your Eyes, and the Keystudio tracks would fall into this category for me...although they all have tracks I love. ..... I guess it's the songwriter's illness, hearing what you might have done differently with someone else's tune! LOL..

I must say that I really don't care much for Union and Open Your Eyes, but I don't think I *hate* them. It's difficult to hate a Yes album in its entirety; I think each one has something rewarding to hear on it!
But before any of you think that I wax Pollyanna-ish, do please know that I *am* capable of artistic viciousness; I reserve my tenderly-nurtured yet furiously-roaring hate for the likes of Kenny G, Britney, Mike Portnoy, and the estimable Stevie Nicks. LOL!

Union has always been my least favorite work, but hate is too strong a word as there is always something to like in a Yes album.
Actually Lee, while the Yes-West faction may be smaller, there are quite a few of us who LOVE the Rabin-era works, including myself. Take a good look at some of the threads, you will see there is quite an appreciation for Trevor's work.

Hate is a very mean and angry word, but do understand where you are coming from.
I guess for me it is DRAMA. I have a hard time excepting a Yes recording without Jon. Originally the main song that I formed my opinion on was ‘Into The Lens’. I felt Yes was going punk! At the time it was very scary for me. I felt like I was losing my best friend, Yes.
In hindsight I am warming up to some songs in DRAMA, but I’m only talking lukewarm.
I love Yes and all Yes music. If Yes were to make a 'bad' album I would be the last to know. When it comes to things Yes, I know that I am a bit blind so don’t ask me about a Yes album I hate. That being said I must admit that Alan’s Ramshackled has one great song on it the rest is only OK. That is the worst thing I can think of saying about anything Yes.

I can't "hate" any album by Yes. There are some albums I listen to less than others but even they lift me up when I listen to them. I enjoy every diferent phase Yes has evolved thru. Each phase brought something new in the group's recordings and live performances. I find alot of people really don't look at Drama as a Yes album but it's more of a "yes" album than some others (in my opinion). I found it a great change with a fresh attitude. Chris rocked and I enjoyed Goeff Downes' keyboards and Steve really got to rock. I think Billy Sherwood brought some great ideas to the band and loved watching him play Cinema. Trevor Rabin breathed new life into the band and his guitar playing was fabulous (dare I say that being a Steve freak myself?). I though Igor brought some real promis (dare I say that being a Rick and Patrick freak?). I didn't think I'd like Magnification (with so little keyboards in the recordings) but I loved it. Anyway, I couldn't hate anything this band put's out (unless they turn Rap on me, ha ha).

As with most everyone else, I don't really hate any of the albums. It's more disappointment, especially with Open Your Eyes. Another disappointment (more when it was new than now) was Tormato. I can remember sitting in my college dorm, playing the record for my friends (after saying how great this would be!) only to be sorta let down :confused:
I was thinking it would've been better than it turned out. We all liked OTSWOF. Balancing that was Circus of Heaven (I apologize in advance if you're a fan of that song, no disrespect meant).

Tales from Topographic Oceans is the least played album in my collection. Fortunately, I did not buy it when it was originally released (too poor). Had it been otherwise, I doubt I would have bought any more Yes albums.

Welcome to Yesfans Bobby! Good to meet you my friend!
Hey, give TALES another whirl. First: Turn off the cell phone. Get in a comfortable position. The lotus position? I dunno... How do you relax when you are finished paying the bills, you have two days-off ahead of you, and your wife's out of town? Good. The couch is good. Did you say you had a bit of funny pizza seasoning in the drawer from last New Years Eve? Go get it.
Now, stop worrying about whether you will miss the new episode of CSI: Just T-Bow it and watch it tomorrow. Now close your eyes. Stop peeking. Hit 'Play' on the stereo.
Jon IS chanting in some wierd language there. Don't wory about it. It's ok.
You are NOT a scientologist. Neither is Jon. Now, Shhh!
Wakey's synth-line is burning a new equator into every globe that Rand McNalley never mapped. Welcome to Mars. Shh!
Just listen to that! Like nothing you ever heard before. What style of music is this, this is no STYLE of music!
Now drink another swig of Bushmills and coffee, relax, ears attuned...
You're getting it! I see your head bobbing...
A smile creeping onto your face...
We'll turn you into a YES-Bohemian yet!
I didn't like TALES either, when I first heard it.
I thought it rambled, and it didn't 'rock', not obviously...
For myself, I was a teen-ager at the time.
A few weeks after I decided TALES was rubbish, I smoked a bit of Uh-HUH and listened again, with different ears.
Whaddayaknow: it made sense...
TALES is nothing more than the surface of the great blue sea, and how does one map the top of something like that?
One doesn't.
Unless you are Jon Anderson and Steve Howe...
TALES.
Give it another whirl. Why not? Worth your time!
~~~~~~~~
Great to meet you Bob! Post often, make the best of friends, have the best of days!
You are in the right place!
Yours,
....I echo Mr. Grey's sentiments,heartily,Mr.Chariot....!....of all Yes albums,it is perhaps Tales which weathers the trial of time the best....oh,how sneakily it has crept up on me...!...
My most prized possession is a fully yessigned copy of TALES that the original Liquor Locusts gave me for my birthday this year...
I am going to put it on the 'phones' right now...
Blast my ears out with YES's Ode To Joy.
There is nothing better in this life. I swear.
Where's my pipe? Where's my bowl? Fiddlers Five?
Certainly.
Hate is way too strong a word for me to apply to ANY Yes album..
I dislike a couple..(OYE, BG)...but hate..nope..not me...
I do my best to find the positive aspects within any project :)
That just about sums it up for me too. I can't warm to 'Drama' without Jon, but don't hate it. '9012Live The Solos' seems pretty pointless as a live album but even that has some high spots.
TALES on the other hand is the pinnacle of Yesness..one of the truly great albums of all time, the Sgt.Pepper of progressive rock...it just takes a little longer than Sgt Pepper to acclimatize yourself to it.
Well, you are So correct Scoot!
Still...
If some sot with a 45 held me at bay and asked me to choose between Going For The One and Union...
I'd figure he was a follower of Rush Limbaugh, and I'd ignore the despot-wannabe.
It wont happen, so I don't have to finish that sentence! :ele:
It's all good.
Some things are gooder than others...
There's something on all the albums I enjoy. Tormato is probably the weak one for me, but there's times when I like it too.
On the front page it says "Yes albums I hate" by Rick Weber........Somebody get that off of there!! There's no such thing as a Yes album I hate.
BobbyChariotMy top 5 Yes albums are really close. Relayer, Close to the Edge, The Yes Album, Tales, Going for the One.
The first time I heard Tales was live, on the Tales tour. It blew me out of my seat.
Oddly enough, it was "The Remembering" that first got me hooked, but I pretty much loved it all, right away, except "The Ancient." That took 20 years to really get.
Bobby! Welcome.
Tales was one of the first Yes albums I owned, and at first I thought it was cheesy, weird, androgynistic, and I don't know what else.
Now I know it's just because I didn't "get it." You know? Some bands cannot be appreciated on first listen. In fact, the BEST bands out there are ones that you can't "get" at first.
Tales is arguably their best work. Or damn close to it. Just give it a chance.
Androgyistic? Because of Jon's vocals?
For those of you who don't like Tales - relax, get stoned, have some wine - your method of choice. Then put it on end-to-end. Let the music take you places you've never been before. Enjoy!
That's some good advice for Tales. Whatever takes your mind out of its defenses, do it. Then just think as it plays.
