Dances! Wow! Fantastic!

I am just blown away! I was looking at these pics with my mouth hanging open. Just beautiful! Now, you can never move.

I haven't seen a mantee in years. They look like mythical creatures, don't they? They are so ancient, so gentle, so endangered.

Obey the manatee signs, boaters!!!!

I know, the water always pulls at me.

Remember the whole near Banana Island at Crystal River?
That was the inspiration for the painting. What I had seen while diving there. Crystal River brought much inspiration to other things...daughter's name as well.

I the roll that came back was mostly Big Ed, the mural, Christmas morning and that was it. Ah well, next roll now that I have this program for pics.

Here are a couple of graphic design pieces that I made for fun, one is titled "WHAT DO YOU HEAR?" and the other "TUNNEL TO TOLEDO" was taken by me on my way to see YES in Toledo during the LADDER tour. i am not sure if this tunnel is actually in Toledo or Chicago or what, I just know it's on the HWY that leads from the Twin Cities to Toledo, OH. Inspired by my experience at Carnaval in Brazil. 30 x 40 oil on canvas.

YYY

This was taken in Antigua, Guatemala as part of a series. The WALLS were as you see them. No manipulations.
Anitgua was a charming old Spanish colonial small town. The main landmark is a huge volcano that still rumbles and dominates the landscape. Antiguas history has been plagued with earthquakes . Consequently many of the large old colonial buildings have been severely damaged over the centuries. Wear, Tear and numerous layers of paint have create some facinating textures on the facade of buildings many of which are still inhabited, if only a few rooms.

YYY, I like your dancers inspired by Carnaval in Brazil.

Yesiam: a chill and a deep sigh. The detail there: just gorgeous!
I want to see more of what you do! Please! The Levin photo is also wonderful: you caught him nearly smiling! Love it!

Astronomy: you make beautiful children! What fun pictures!

Vulpes: I love 'comic art': were you ever into Cerebus? I collect a bit of stuff you probably have: have you ever checked-out...

I had turned-off the computer, and started to fall asleep, when I realized that I couldn't. I was too excited about this thread!

We already know that Yesfans has become a city.
A city with great respect for the natural world, designed in the Japanese fashion of Frank Lloyd Wright and Roger Dean, "build your house 'around' the tree: never uproot any beautiful thing."

We obviously have our Alexandrian Library... our favorite gathering spots... even politics at times.

But I was thinking: when a culture TRULY 'becomes', that's when the artists appear.

They fashion beauty wherever they go, out of a deep love for the homeworld.

This is what you have all done here.
This is the heart of Yesfans.
Jon would be proud of you...

The greatest compliment you can possibly pay any artist is this: to be so inspired by their art so as to express what you love in your own voice.

This excites me greatly.

Yesfans has a deep living beating heart: amd that is you, my friends.

Now I will try and get some sleep! Please, PLEASE! Carry on.

Art in music, art as a visual performance, art for viewing...it's all good! Woo Hoo. This is getting so good. Thanks to all of you who are posting comments and work, what an inspiration.
I have to photograph and scan to disc my work so I can download more.

Carol...the Brazialian dance..OMG. YES, and YES again. I will post my Sertoma work "Listen" but the poster is so darn big I don't know how I'm going to do it.

To the ones who create on canvass or other surfaces, do you create to music and then later look at your piece and it "sings" to you? YES?

Earlie...(tear in my eyes for this one)
"But I was thinking: when a culture TRULY 'becomes', that's when the artists appear.

This is a great point Carol. My sister says, "You got all the talent!" and I say she got every ounce of organization and neatness. I do believe there are people whose talents and strengths lie in math (forget it) or mechanical inclinations (who me?-ha!) specific areas where they shine. I wish I could play the guitar. I have so much respect for those artists...all those strings (Steve just amazes me) in accord, plucked at various stations in different positions with different strokes and rhythms to create sounds that give me such inspiration to create. It's all good.

During a Total Eclipse most of the sun, if not all of the Sun's rays are blocked. We were standing in the moons shadow. I'm sure that it's not complelely healthy but it was very easy and comfortable on the eyes during the climax. This eclipse lasted for almost 7 minutes and there was alot of time to view it without feeling any discomfort. I'm not a doctor but I felt no discomfort during and after. The photo was taken directly through the lense.

Here is an image that came to me in a dream. I call it 'Eve's Telepathic Dream". Dead leaves signify "Mortality" - Green leaves and fruit signify "Tree of Life and Knowledge". The unwinding headress signify "Eve's foresight of the Serpent and impending future. Coincidently, it wa bought by a Psychic.

Yesiam, That's very nice. I love the mood. eerie, magical, mysterious..............

sschiffman,
Costa Rica is incredible. The Rainforest, wildlife, nature and people are great. I saw flocks of Tucans there and many other exotic brightly colored birds flying in the wild for the first time. Now it disturbs me when I see them clipped and in cages. There were monkeys bombarding us with branches from the canopy above, giant tortouse laying eggs on the beach, half inch bright flourescent poisoness frogs, the endangered manatees in the tributaries and on & on.......The westcoast is developed for tourism. The Caribbean coast is layedback and very Caribbean but nature is everywhere. Go Go Go..............

I took this in Limon, a the Caribbean Sea coast. The young boy returning from school wore a Ninja Turtle book bag.

Took this in Trinidad during Carnival. This was only 1/30 of the actually crowd parading in this group. Most of the time I was down in the center of the action of the Soca/Calypso madness.

And cool character, V.N.!!

Here's something I did of Todd Rundgren.....

Here's something I posted a long time ago in another thread...

Wow Riff! That Todd pic is wild - what did you use, acrylics?

Again, YYY, beautiful!! Love the composition here. And also your color choice. Very chic and hip and mystical!! Dig it!

Carol, believe it or not, outside of first sketching the Todd pic in pencil, it is all magic marker!! LOL!!! I'm not an artist such that I have true "supplies"~ no paints or anything....I just sometimes get the "bug" to draw or create something and make do with whatever I may have around the house!! LOL!!

Great stuff Riff! Love the mountains... How'd I miss that the first time you posted it? And, of course, Todd goes without saying! Haha! You caught 'The Kid' at his most psychedelic... I could see this as an illustration for the "Time Stops!" middle-eight from '#1 Common Denominator'! (A real trippy Todd-song, if the rest of you haven't heard it!).

I love painting, drawing, gardening, and photography. I don't have any paintings or drawings in an e-format. I do have some digital garden photos. I love to grow roses, especially Old Garden Roses, and here is one of my favorites taken during a misty rain. The rose is an Alba rose and it dates back to 1836. Its name is Felicite Parmentier, and its scent is intoxicating.

That's right! I was under the spell of YES amongst other things. Again, that was one of the MOST moving shows I've seen. Relayer was a very special tour.

I attended the CIA from 74-79. Great time of my life. Cleveland was a bit strange for me but I had wonderful experiences I will never forget. I also saw alot of great bands during that period, including Gentle Giant, Renaissance, Zappa, Joni and many more.

I attended art college for a few years and even managed to wrangle an Associate degree in Commercial Art out of the whole mess only to go on to become a mechanical designer! Anyway, one of the things I excelled at was typography and lettering. Roger Dean made a big impression on me with his original lettering – the Close To The Edge cover logo and lyric sheet is a very big influence on not only the way I would create logos but also on just everyday handwriting! Hmmm- wait a sec- do people still do that?

Here’s an example of that influence. I was trying to come up with something for my avatar here at Yesfans and I thought a Deanesque logo of my handle might be appropriate. I started out with some hand drawn sketches to get a rough idea of how I might want it to look. Then I turned it over to – get this – my CAD program here at work, AutoCAD R14! Working from my sketches, I sharpened up the image, added a little colour, etc. until I came up with the image posted here. Unfortunately, when shrunk down, the image started to lose its resolution and “jaggies” (unsmooth lines) would appear. As you can see, they are still evident at this size. If any other computer artists here might have any ideas on how I could convert this into another program (Paint Shop – or?) and clean ‘er up, I would sure appreciate your input! Thanks~

Peace,

Phil

Sorry, I don't know squat about imaging programs. Try RobAdams, YYY or Endless Dream. I bet one of those three could help you.

Vulpes Namekaw
01-29-2003, 01:08 PM
If you save your image at a large size, as either a .bmp or .gif, and then use a program like Paint Shop or Photoshop (I use PhotoDeluxe, which is a "lite" version of Photoshop) to scale it down, it should look pretty smooth. I usually use the 'sharpen' option after that, but that's at your discretion. Then I would save it as a .gif, considering the solid colors and minimal pallete you seem to be using. I hope that helps.

Thanks Sheila, Vulpes and Riff, for your compliments and suggestions! I’ll look into it… the palette is limited, isn’t it? This was basically a rough draft – to see what the lettering would like in colour and to coordinate the colours chosen. Eventually I thought about adding a landscape background and making the logo look three dimensional – things that can be accomplished in AutoCAD as well using a software module called Render. It’s used mostly to make wireframe models look more “3D”, but I believe I could tweak the image enough (by actually making it a 3D model) to make it work. I think it might be easier just to bring it into an art program and fiddle with it that way, though. Thanks again ~

Peace,

Phil

Try 400 ASA for indoors. 800 tends to be a bit grainy. If you're not getting enough light, change your F-stops, but be aware of how your depth of field will change.

400? But I have 800...and four rolls of it. What do I shoot with the 800? Night launch off Canaveral? and what is an F-stop?
Is that when you get pulled over by a police officer for a traffic violation?

Well, Dances, I am sure that you will find wonderful things to do with 800. Yes, it is definitely for very dark conditions. Perhaps it would best be used during an evening of passion with you and the mister.

Cute little f-stop joke. However, some people would say that marriage is an F-stop!

All good photographers... I shot Dave (but he's still alive) with 800 film, 2.5, 60 up to 1000. 6 shots. I could not get anything natural looking with that lighting. I love the tones in the above but am looking for greater contrasts and more of the natural club lighting to come through. No flash!

Recommendations? Anyone....Anyone>>

Dances, Two things to consider- Lens speed, and film development, assuming you're happy with film speed (it looks grainy to me, you're fighting for f-stops in that dark lighting). It comes down to optics- how fast is you lens? I have a 85mm 1.8 that is a light gathering monster- if your shooting in a night club with available light, it starts with a fast lens. The other thing you could do, is to ask your film processor to push the film- this involves giving the film more time in the developer- it should create more contrast, but you'll have to experiment for best results.

I am a baby photographer right now. This helps a great deal. I have a developer who is working with me on my film and another photographer who is helping me as well but he's busy too. These kinds of details help me play.

I have a 35 mm lense, and now bumping to 400 film. I'm shooting a club tomorrow night that had a greater amount of gel lighting than the other location. What settings do you recommmend? At this stage of the game I am not hoping for much and experimenting a lot.

Meanwhile: Queenie and Patrick from Saturday. This is 400 film outdoors with sea fog moving in ( no direct sun)

She calls him "Bubba"! They wrestle and tickle and fight and all so to see this was rare. He misses having her around to harass now that she is out of the house. I decided to paint the background of this shot and use his face from this shot and her face from another shot.

Cool pics Dances!

Did 'Queenie's' name come from the Rolling Stones song, 'Little Queenie?' Just wondered...

Half of my photos come out. The other half just look like crap...
I don't wish to be professional... and I have no scanner. So you can't see my injury to what Ansel added to the art! HAHA! ;)

Now I have to get serious about getting my daughter's paintings scanned so I can put them on this thread. She just earned a $6,500 art scholarship to go with the $9, 500 academic scholarship she was awarded a few months ago, and will be a double major in art (emphasis on painting) and English (emphasis on writing) at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the fall.

Am I proud, you betcha!

This is called hyperspace. I tried to make a portal that would transport something into hyperspace, it was my 4th computer image.

This one is called Ice, i think the image speaks for itsself really.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/vincent.codd/ice.jpg

This last one I called Ornament. It was my first attempt at trying to generate something realistic, i thought it came out pretty well seeing how i had nothing to look at.
