One of the best from the "Rabin era". This is the video quoted near the end of YESYEARS. I'd like to see the complete video of this concert.

Not a fan of Shock To the System (Jon's voice in this one grates on my nerves), but I love the video. I'll watch Trevor play anything.

It's gonna take a while for me to get over Trevor's complaint that this sounds like City of Love, while he's singing the harmony wrong throught the entire freaking tour.
Know your enemies.
:D
Or at least their harmony parts.
Sorry Trevor fans ... but that's always annoyed me! The only Union song to ever get the live treatment*, and the dude sings a major third harmony over a minor chord. And then gripes about a song he seems to not really understand ... just bugs me, sorry.
*edit* - *Lift Me Up was played as well, whoops.

I like the bass run in this song. Someone said Levin played it on the album. No idea if this is right or no..

"Saving My Heart" was (unfortunately?) played on Summer leg. I guess they rehearsed some of "Take the Water..." but never played it at a regular show.
Yes, I read that Trevor interview recently. He actually says he "hated playing this every night" (I did not check the quote, but think it's right). Not the greatest song ever, but...not awful, is it?
Tony would have played the bass. Chris added some b. vox to some ABWH/Union tracks, but there wasn't time to rerecord bass parts.
Hearing bootlegs of Jon's intro to this song kind of cracks up a friend of mine and me. Sometimes if we see something bad happen, like a missed play watching sports on TV, we'll say to each other, "That's shock to the rights of mankind right there."

Saving My Heart is the one Rabin song from his Yes years that I cannot stand. I have read that Trevor didn't much care for it, either, but it was recorded and then played during the tour at Jon's insistence.

Ack...not a Rabin track. This was an ABWH track (Anderson/Bruford/WotsAndWotsOfSessionKeyboardists/Haun)

It fits pretty comfortably in that canon, though. A little too comfortably, maybe, if you ask Trevor.
But while I'll obviously defer to anyone who has specific knowledge that they tried to copy "City of Love," I don't hear a lot besides a "COL"-inspired riff. Which is, admittedly, pretty close, but there's a lot more to "Shock" than that intro riff. It's like calling "Big Generator" an "Owner" clone. Yeah, the chorus riff is similar, but the song around it is not. And with Yes, you have to look at the whole piece.
I prefer the studio arrangement to this one, and I'm not sure why they would have re-done it for the live shows because it's basically just moving some things around, but this is a great performance. One of the highlights of my first Yes show, which came on this tour.
I've posted this elsewhere, but this was my first Yes album, and in the dark days before the internet, I had no concept at all of what the band politics were, apart from the general knowledge that there must have been heavy politics. The idea that Rick and Steve were barely on the album never occurred to me, even from reading the liner notes, which list "half of California," to borrow Rick's joke. That said: Jimi Haun does a damn good Steve Howe imitation on Union, and in particular on this song. After 20 years of listening to a lot of Steve Howe, I have to say he nailed it here. And given that Steve plays basically the same riffs on stage as he does on the album, you wonder what could have necessitated replacing him almost completely on this tune. But Jimi nailed it here (and on most of the rest of the album, I think -- the rest of it seems very very consistent with Steve's style).

This is the first time I've ever seen someone mention this on here. Yeah, man. Yeah. Just.... yeah. Over time I've kind of talked myself into the major third adding an element of dissonant intrigue, but then I hear this version and I'm reminded of how wrong it is. And Trevor knows better. This is the single reason that I can't fully enjoy the live version.

Shock to the system is a great track. I much prefer this heavier side of YES or ABWH, whatever you want to call it. The extended live version is much better than the album, but I do really love the rich sound from Brufords Snare drum on the Union album version

Sorry, I never did like this track. Since I am not a fan of YesWest, it made it even harder to understand why the ABWH half of the group recorded a song that sounded like it was a Rabin tune!
I played Union a lot when I first got it but not any more.

Funny I can't help but think, with all the politics in Yes, that this really was a minor miracle that this tour/album ever happened, even if the recording was not really a "union".
Funny to see Trever and Chris jaming and enjoying this one the way they did. It wasn't their track at all.
