View Full Version : Are rock/pop stars out of touch with reality?

The title should have read "Are rock/pop etc etc."
I thought I would ask this on Billy's section.
Maybe he can shed some light it for me.
He is the only member that I know who actually bothers on this site. It is by the fans, for the fans and possibly the best place to keep up with what is going on. Scotty also contributes for Chris, albeit 3rd party.
So why don't the others come along and join the party. It's not hard with today's technology, we nearly all have internet access of some kind.
I would have thought it is an advantage to keep in touch with your fan base, after all, it is where most of your income comes from, not to suggest I wish to actually own any band member.
As I said before, Billy does it, and he does it very well. He has answered ALL of my PMs I have ever sent him.

Yesfans can be quite a "fickle" bunch ( just read more than half the postings around here, why would any member come here to get one-way bashed or critiqued for something as minor as caught picking their nose in public?;-) ). When I was fortunate to meet some of the guys this last tour, they were up on some of the threads and postings here and were appreciative of some of the kind words and support. Prof. Billy is the consummate nice guy; friendly, a great sense of humor, thick-skinned at times and knows not to take things too personal but does his best to respond to just about every post to educate and set the record straight. Billy is first and foremost a Yesfan. Billy is genuine; a people's person and has been a breath of fresh air for his contributions and knowledge here. I will say something about Billy Sherwood that is different than most former members and current members; the man is constantly busy and produces some fine products for your listening pleasure. Billy is keeping the Yesflame alive and we should all applaud and support him and enjoy some of the "in the now" music.

I don't remember the crap we gave him. I kinda jokingly jibed him about Jimmy's involvement in making Union a non-Yes album, but that's it. This is and should remain a fan site; I'd love to have Yes members post here, but they have to accept that people here have their own opinions.

I think it is a fan site and it would have a very different dynamic if band members posted in here.
I prefer my heros to remain at a suitable distance - I think they are still too visible at times.

Billy is awesome, end of.
Although, Silent-wings I can understand where you're coming from. I rarely join in with my own band's myspace dialogues with fans, because we can get some mean posters there. but that's just my personality, I'm quite sensitive.
Like I said, it'd be awesome to see more Yes members, but I can understand them not wanting to get involved if they don't want to.

IMO, any and all of them would have to have pretty thick skin to get involved here. I admit to having said some pretty critical things in the past. Would I have said them to their faces? Perhaps...none of it was cruel as far as I can remember.
Anyone who makes music has to accept that not everyone (including fans) are going to like every single thing they do. That's just reality.
I'm very glad that Billy is here..many times he has "set the record straight" about the time in which he was involved in Yes. Good on yer! :D

Sometimes you don't need to be a part of "this" to know and feel the energy and vibration of this yes energy and it's fans.
If you beleave in something strong enough and mix it with love, your feelings will come across in various dementions.
Dememtions that jon loves to toy with...

Billy is very down-to-earth and very cool for posting here... he also clearly recognizes the value of social networking sites as a marketing tool... and more power to him!

While it is nice to see that Billy takes part in the community and brings much added value...a more controversial viewpoint which I may possess has to do with the sense of entitlement the Internet can often bestow. Just because we may be able to reach someone online doesn't mean we should. If a musician chooses not to closely interact with fans, that is something I can respect. If they do, that's also great (although I've seen it lead to some kerfluffles during my 11-year history with the medium) but they don't owe us that nor should we expect it. If we are lucky enough to experience that kind of contact, it's a gift, just like their music and performance. But I'm not going to say that a person who just happens to be someone I admire is out of touch with reality just because they don't have a direct online presence. Plenty of people choose not to do so, and that's their perogative.

it's been my task in recent years - but I am thread-crapping, so back on topic...
for our beloved Jon, this has been the case from the beginning... but it's provided us with brilliant lyrics (particularly from around '71-'73) and questionable stage banter/behaviour...

Reality? Their job is to create new music and tour... I don't believe hanging out (seen or unseen) at fan sites is required... When there is any new developments they usually show up in one way or another... I sense most of them enjoy their privacy...

That's pretty much how I see it, too.
If I was famous, I'd hide under a rock---or I'd at least fall asleep in some hidey-hole at the after-shows. I do that at parties, anyway.

I figure if anyone in or associated with the band shows up here and posts about what's going on with the band, that's nice - but not necessary - and if they don't do it, I don't hold it against them or feel that they personally owe me this information.
The internet is also very touchy, and communication can get, ah...murky. Attempting to use the internet to engage in good, from-the-heart, genuine conversation with some of these damned temperamental artists can be a pain in the ass. :D
Once they've made a good album, thus not ripping me off of $17.99, they cease owing me an explanation.

Hi All http://www.yesfans.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
I appreciate the kind words. I've made alot of friends here by virtue of the internet and this site and some of those releationships have reached outside the virtual realm we have here and straight into my home. Malcolm, Anne, Laney, Matt, Tasia, Earl etc... People I would never have had the pleasure and honor of meeting and hanging out with in the real world {as they say} with out this virtual world we have here at YESfans being the conduit for the meeting and subsequent visits to my home/studio. For that I am grateful. Life is short and I enjoy getting as much out of it as time allows. A big part of that for me is meeting people and increasing the circle of friends.
For the record I have always been uncomfortable when ever anyone uses the phrase "rock star" as it pertains to me... I'm not a rock star, what I am is a musician who has been blessed to work with some amazing musicians, singers and yes in some cases "ROCK STARS" lol. I was also blessed to have fate somehow guide me straight into becoming a member of one of my favorite bands of all time and still is, YES. which brings us full circle to my presence here with you all... I am after all a YES fan myself. Of course I want to stand on the rooftop and shout about CIRCA: and all the other projects I have a hand in {some call it self promotion, I call it pride in doing what you do}, but I'm here 1st and formost like any of you, as a YES fan.

Love this second paragraph of yours Prof'. Wonderful sentiments.
And, as regards the first...well, I assure you...the honour and pleasure is all ours.
I assume this post now allows me to be a little indiscreet and relate how much of a joy my first visit to your home/studio was last July when I had the unbelievable privilege of seeing you in action at the console (crikey, more like Captain Kirk on the bridge of the SS Enterprise!!) whilst Tony was there adding his keyboard parts to the closing section of 'Hey Jude' for the Beatles tribute album...which I now have!! Love it!! (A quick review elsewhere)
Oh, and to visit again just recently with, as you mention, Anne and Laney was simply THE coolest thing.

I have to say that Billy Sherwood has answered every PM and/or correspondence on MySpace I have ever written to him. I think that's pretty amazing. As for the Yes site I had my bone to pick with whoever is operating it when the last tour was canceled. I wrote a rather terse note and did get a response back but it was still extremely aggravating after the expense of a trip, motel rooms, meals, etc not to have had an absolute head's up as to the upcoming cancellation in Denver. I suspected it would happen but couldn't get anything out of anyone and believe me I tried. I had a suggestion sent to me by someone who probably knew what was going on (you know who you are), but even they didn't actually say what was happening which I find totally dumbfouding. Now that I've shot the wad I probably won't be able to go to a Asia/Yes tour this summer just because I'm broke after the last two aborted tours. It's lose, lose.
