Took awhile to really like Tales, I think it's a masterpiece!

Travel we say, wander we choose, love tune
Lay upon me, hold me around lasting hours
We love when we play"

I do miss smoking the pot. Now it just tends to befuddle me and make me want to have sex and go to sleep. Not a bad thing to be certain, but not as fun as when I would completely grove out and read books, stare at art, drink all afternoon...mental adventuring....

I was going through a very difficult time in college. A friend gave me "Autobiography of a Yogi" and I found great solice in it. I later noticed a reference to this work in the Tales liner notes. I ate some acid, put on Tales, and marveled in the truth of it.

A bag of weed and the full 4 sides...only pausing to turn over the disc or put on the next one.
It was 1978 when I first heard this.
It was the only way to listen to it.
Happy 35th. And I'm glad I've seen two sides played live. Only wish I was young enough to have seen it live in its entirety.
Oh, sorry...I didn't realize there was another thread on this.
Maybe a mod can merge the 2 ?

Ran to my record store to get this upon release. Friends and I had already prepared a psychedelic listening party to honor it's debut. Maybe that's why it grabbed my soul immediately. YES were always an EVENT to myself and freshman college dorm party friends
Please listen and tell me where else I can find these raw altenative versions of THE ANCIENT and RSOG I discovered for the first time.

Wendell, these are the bonus tracks on the Rhino re-mastered re-issue of Tales. If you don't have it, get it, it's really worth it. The definitive release.... great job with the mastering, the packaging and everything. I had the earlier Atlantic remaster but it was nowhere as good as this... so it made for a gift to a friend....
I like Wakeman's alternative keyboards on the opening section of "The Ancient"... though ultimately I definitely think he made the right choice in the end.
On RSOG some of the tracks sound like what ended up as final tracks. So it is my opinion that this is an "in progress" look at the piece as they were in the process of constructing it..... some parts final versions and obviously many parts only rough takes.

You got my curiousity going, so I did some digging.
I believe these are the bonus tracks from
the re-mastered TFTO-
http://music.barnesandnoble.com/Tales-from-Topographic-Oceans/Yes/e/081227379124
It's interesting to hear the process, knowing the gems
these will eventually be polished into.
It usually requires at least a paragraph to other musicians
of variations on "now, remember...this is only a demo..."

I was in high school when TFTO was released, only the second Yes album I had ever bought (after Fragile). Loved it, however, most of my friends thought I'd gone off the deep end . . .

I adore this album from beginning to end. When I was younger, I found "The Ancient" difficult to get into (which meant I skipped it on a regular basis) but I grew into that piece as I aged. I now love it, of course.
This is a landmark album in terms of 'what was wrong with prog' back in the day. People slagged it to death for its indulgences. But see, that's what I *love* about it. :)
Been listening to it for almost twenty years now (I'm 36), and I've only grown fonder of it with each listen. I especially love the restored intro to "Revealing Science", that should NEVER have been cut from the original release!
So, a thank-you to Jon and Steve especially for seeing this enormous concept through to the end, because it has been an essential part of the soundtrack to my life.

This has always been my favourite Yes album. The depth of the music and the concept just blows me away. Even today, I still find something new in it, every time I listen to it.
