I'm having some sound problems with the new Fragile disc. Sounds are missing, some are really amplified, ugh. It's a disaster.

Do you have to set it up like you do with a movie ?
Good luck.

You just might need some of that "Hot colour" mate.
A friend of mine got a bung copy of Magnification but it was replaced by the company. I hope it works out for you.

I think I fixed the sound, but man, this thing sounds different! Each instrument is so isolated. I dunno.

Wow, the stereo mix on this is perfect!

What's your verdict ?

The surround mix will take some getting used to, but the stereo mix is the best I've ever heard this album.

I have to say, the 5.1 mix of this album is not too good. I could handle the first two songs, then We Have Heaven got a little worse, and SSOTS is absolutely horrible!!! The picture of Jon that comes on the screen seems appropriate for how it sounds......Cheesey. The effects added to Jon's voice and the instruments make this song sound flat and distant... Not in your face like the stereo mix is. On a positive not, I also think the stereo mix of this disc is great! It sounds extremely good. This is the real reason I bought the disc (is for the stereo mix). I still have not heard an album remixed to 5.1 that sounds even 1/4 as good as the stereo mix (original mix). If they ever do release CTTE, I think I would be too afraid to listen to the 5.1 mix. It would destroy the album for me. But, I would certainly buy the disc for the stereo mix.

CDNever has finally shipped my copy, but after reading these comments, I'm not all that excited about getting it. I was hoping for a good 5.1 mix.

I have to disagree. While I didn't listen to all of it, I cranked up the volume, turned down the lights and listened to the surround mix of HOTS. I thought it sounded very nice. Better than I ever heard it sound. I then listened to the stereo mix. I thought that sounded flat compared to the dvd-a mix.

I'm glad you like it, Dave. Honestly, I didn't even make it to Heart Of The Sunrise. To me, it sounds like the tapes have been tampered with too much, and I don't like the extra time between songs on the 5.1 mix. I really, really want to like this disc. Fragile is a special album to me. But after hearing the DVD-audio of Neil Young's Harvest (I know, apples/oranges), which sounds JUST AMAZING to me, I was just disappointed. For the record, I don't like the DVD-audio of Brain Salad Surgery either, I'm positive they used alternate takes or added something that wasn't there before, which is a big no-no in my book. But I still want to check out Close To The Edge and Tales, if/when they make it to DVD-A.

I agree with BSS. It does sound a bit "phoney". So you like Harvest. I saw that and thought about getting it.
You need to turn out the lights and check out HOTS. I think you might like it. Chris's bass sounds great coming from the subwoofer.

I must say that the mix is awesome. I listened to it in DTS 5.1, instead of 5.1. I first listened to it in 5.1 until I set the sound, DTS is much better. So adjust your speakers, sit back, relax and listen to this musical masterpiece! Lets just hope for CTTE and Tales, soon, very soon.

OK, I listened to the dts track. It sounds better than DVD-A track, but some songs, especially We Have Heaven and South Side Of The Sky are still way different. Heart Of The Sunrise is staggering, amazing. I'll do Dolby Digital tomorrow.

Larry, Stick with dts. You heard the best there is.

I told you HOTS was nice, to put it mildly. ;)

I have never heard a 5.1 or DTS mix of a former stereo recording. It must be very weird to hear a 5.1 mix for the first time of one of your favorite albums. Maybe that's the reason why a lot of people don't like the DVD-a version, at least at first.

The problem I'm having with the surround mixes is most evident on "We Have Heaven". The third and fourth vocal lines - "He is here" and "to look around" are very, very faint. It's not just mixed further back , or wherever, but quite. Just plain quite.

I played the stereo mix just to make it through the songs.

Biggest disappointment? The break between "Long Distance Runaround" and "The Fish". Perhaps it's my DVD player. Perhaps it's all DVD players, but those songs are supposed to slide together. It shouldn't have an abrupt stop like that.

Overall grade C+ / B- .
