Hello my droogies.

I was listening to the studio version of Ritual a few days ago, and I noticed something. Right after the second chris solo in the song (after the "they dont seem to matter at all, at all, at all....), there is the sound of a gym whistle in the song, right before the song takes off into the heavier part. I have owned a copy of topographic oceans for ten years now, and I have noticed it unconsciously, but not till a few days ago that I actually questioned it. Anybody notice it yet?

By the way, 29 years strong, Tales from Topographic Oceans still ROCKS!!

That, my dear High, was one of Jon's first forays into directed percussion. The whistle is often used in Brazilian percussion; I get the impression that Jon's use was a little sarcastic, as in, 'OK, guys, break it down'!

This, I believe, occurs at approximately 12:03 into the track. When I hear the whistle I always imagine it's a traffic cop blowing it. Don't ask why. I might be nuts.

With everything going on in the piece at that point, they probably needed a traffic cop!:band:

Yea I noticed the whistle right away.

It reminds me of being at Forest Hills (where they use to play the US Open) in about 1982. I was watching Genesis doing Suppers Ready and Phil bringing out his whistle "brrrrt! All Change".

For a long time I thought I was hearing an emergency vehicle Siren. It is way back in the mix. I havn'ttimed it but I think it is through the first 5 or more minutes after the opening chant is concluded.

anyone else hear it?

I catch it more in the left headphone.

Okay. I have a bootleg from the Tales tour on CD. I think the show was Cobo hall detroit, 2/28/74. I was listening to that last night, and I got to Ritual, and at the EXACT same place, I heard that damn whistle!! Well, it was a little off cue, and was a little longer, or it may have been feedback (since this recording isnt the BEST of recordings), but something is there.

Siren on RSOG? Well, Ricks mimi-moog sounds like a siren through the whole thing! LOL

Im sure the Soccer referree's whistle on Ritual is louder on the original vinyl than the remixed CD(s).

I was thinking about this very subject on Friday, and look what i found in the archives!

in the QPR video, Alan has the whistle around his neck, and blows it at that point in the song... as has been mentioned previously, the whistle is viewed as legit percussion instrument...

Tales has what I believe to be the first instance of harp on a Yes song... at least, harp not played by an orchestra, which may have happened on TAAW... there are a few harp flourishes about 10 minutes into The Ancient, then again at the coda... there also appears to be some acoustic - likely upright - bass in the Leaves Of Green section... there's still a lot to discover in there after all these years...
