I've had DRAMA for years at home but never really took the time to listen to it (as I had it in LP). One day after falling in love with 'Can you Imagine' I just felt like listening to Chris Squire songs or stuff where he was either the writter or the base and I recalled reading the Yes Stories book where it said that DRAMA was basically all Chris's idea, later developed with the erst of the band. That made me give it a second chance and bought the CD. To this date that CD doen't leave my car's CD player.
I hope some day they realize that a DRAMA song played by Jon would totally kick ass and include it in a tour:evil2:

Hey Kid. Welcome to the site.
You'll find that there are plenty of people here that wish for the same thing.
Myself, I'd love to hear anything from Drama.

I used to have such a grudge against the DRAMA album. When DRAMA came out, I was only a little more than three years into involving myself with YES music. Having to deal with such an abrupt line-up change with my new favorite band rather cheesed me off at the time. I didn't know who Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes were, but I wasn't very happy to see Jon & Rick drop out of the group. I heard INTO THE LENS on the radio soon after the album's release didn't impress me. I felt that if I wanted to hear an imitation of Yes, I could find a Starcastle album somewhere. I didn't buy DRAMA back then.
When the 1980 YES line-up played in NYC, they did an FM broadcast, which I tuned into. When I heard them playing the pre-DRAMA songs I couldn't get into it. I didn't like Trevor Horn's vocals on these Jon classics. I recall that I even stopped recording the show off the radio by the 2nd song.
I finally looked back to DRAMA around 1985, and completely changed my opinion. What a one-of-a-kind Yes album this is. I don't play it often these days, but when I do I like it loud. Standout tracks: MACHINE MESSIAH, DOES IT REALLY HAPPEN, TEMPUS FUGIT....Somewhat good filler: RUN THROUGH THE LIGHT and WHITE CAR
Favorite moment on DRAMA: Toward the end of DOES IT REALLY HAPPEN the music stops....Suddenly Geoff comes in with a keyboard riff, the band joins in, and Chris plays a very tasty bass solo bit leading to the fade out. Add THAT to the FISH solo Chris!

I was curious if you regret stopping recording Rob?
I personally love that album. I think what helped is that I bought it early on in my listening to Yes, after Fragile and The Yes Album. To me, although the lead vocal sounded different, I could still hear Yes clearly.
Maybe that's why I could see an eventual replacement of Jon when he hangs up his vocal chords, but that's a whole different thought and arguement, not to mention another thread somehwere on this site.
As a side note, it also has my second favorite Yes album cover, right after Tales.

I just received a bootleg of Drama and the songs of Jon sound crap w/ Trevor, but the Drama songs were very nice!!
I'm starting to think that really like "the Fish"

I got hooked on Yes in the early 70s with All Good People. Drama was the first Yes tour I ever saw, and I remember at the time, being miffed that Jon wasn't singing. I don't remember what the vocals were like, but I do know that I never lost my sense of fidelity for Yes because of it.
I'm a huge Drama fan. I've said before it is one I take on long road trips. Also being a huge Chris Squire fan (I also own FOOW), I especially appreciate his influence on this one. He really shines on Drama. Not one single dull bass Moment anywhere! I really wish he would sing lead more often. I don't mean that he should sing *instead of* Jon, I just wish more songs were written for Squire's vocals.
Is there somewhere I can get a copy of the Drama tour?

I totally agree, I love when Chris sings lead, my fav is RUN W/ THE FOX!
Try the "Bootlegs" section on www.yeshoo.com for the Drama bootlegs:mad:
YesKid, you won't get an argument from me. I have always loved Drama, consider it a fully legitimate Yes product, and will defend and promote it tirelessly!

Maybe not perfect.
I consider CttE to be a little more perfect, and I only think that isn't because SK can drag on in some places.
But Drama has the lowest amount of filler since CttE, and they even were kind enough to separate the filler from the rest of the tracks for you! :D
Drama is currently my second favorite album by anyone (CttE is first). I haven't been into Yes for a year yet so this will change.

For a long time I never bothered to listen to this album. I figured if Jon was not on it, then it must not be very interesting, since Jon's voice is one of the aspects that made Yes so unique. How could Jon be replaced? Horn's voice was a good replacement for the Yes fold, being somewhat similar to Jon's. This album truly rocks. It definitely has its own flavor! I sometimes wonder what a second album from this line up might have sounded like.

First, welcome aboard Kid!!
I've always liked Drama and why Jon can't sing a Drama song and Steve can't play a Rabin album track (It Can Happen, I'm Running, I Am Waiting) is beyond me. Rabin had no problem playing Steve's material and Jon shouldn't have a problem singing Machine Messiah either, imho....

I'd prefer to see Chris sing a Drama song myself

Preferably one with a lot of harmony. Maybe Does it Really Happen? would be a good jam, and Alan could sing too if Jon doesn't want to open his mouth.

I went through the same emotions with the Drama album as I had with all YES albums. First, I felt sort of dissapointed it's nothing like CTTE or TFTO, but then after a few listenings I was hooked!
I ended up liking each and everyone of the songs in Drama. When I listen to it I have to allow enough time to listen to every second of it.
Drama proved to me how agile YES can be no matter who is in it.
It shows how good they are at putting a song together and make it sound exciting and larger than life.
The same thing happened when Rabin got on board.
I certainly would like to see this album being recognized by YES by doing a cut from it on tour. It'd be fantastic!
I can imagine YES going into Machine Messiah or Into The Lens without any introduction to the songs and the audience just going wild after recognizing what they are playing.
By the way, is it true that in a couple of shows during the Drama tour people threw things at Trevor Horn to show their dissatisfaction with the Anderson songs he was trying to sing?
I hope that didn't occur. That's not the way YES fans behave but after a couple of beers you never know with some people.

I remember listening to Tempus Fugit on radio and going wow! These guys really sound like Yes, although there was something different to the vocals. Notice that Iīve said "different", not "better" or "worse". The change in lead vocals didnīt bother me and I totally loved the album. Itīs perhaps my favorite Yes album.
I was fifteen years old at the time and my musical preferences were (and are) prog rock and new wave, so Drama was the perfect combination.
I recall Squire on a radio interview saying that he and Alan had never played better as a rhythm section, it really shows on Drama. Horn and Downes brought in a quirkiness that I continue to love to this day. Itīs a shame this line up never got to do a follow up with an epic included.

In my previous incarnation on Yesfans and through this user name, I've always praised Drama. It is a very tight and cohesive album. It's also one of the most underrated Yes album in its catalogue, alongside Talk. Being that I was born about a year after the release of Drama, about 10 months after Yes split, and on the same day that Classic Yes was released, I was never able to experience the shocking feeling of the abrupt change in guard from Anderson to Horn or Wakeman to Downes. Which is probably why I'm more kind to this Yes album.
I bought Drama on lp my freshman year of high school (like 6 years ago). I put it on side one and fading in from the speakers is Machine Messiah. Oh! I was blown away by everything of this album. The sound, lyrics, vocals, music, everything! And if there was a Drama song that Yes should cover on any future tour I would pick either Machine Messiah, Tempus Fugit, or Run Through the Light. I would actually think that Run Through the Light would be a likely canidate because that's something that both Rick and Jon had played before previously during the Paris Sessions on its original demo form called "Dance Thru the Light."
Long Live Drama!

It's a great album but I can't say it's PERFECT! Sorry everyone.
The perfect album would be all songs combined that NO YESFAN could say he or she hated or disliked.

Totally agree!! I still don't care for Into The Lens, but I like the rest of the album. Is that 1980 concert ever going to be released? I was only seven when they did it, so I'd like to hear it.
