So, I was talking with Loda, (the owner of the bar I do Kareoke at two nights a weeks) the other day.
The liquor order comes in as we were chatting and the liquor rep sez we got three new bottles of Absinthe. All by different makers.. My jaw hit the floor.
"I thought this stuff wasn't legal" I said......
Loda smiles an deliciously evil grin...Than the Rep sez, "not anymore,"
Anyway...come to find that a few of the local stores even have it on the shelves already....
At $60 a bottle it promises to make a slow return to greatness....
I've just poured myself my first glass and strained ice cold water over a sugar cube into it.....It's now very cloudy and looks just like I've always seen it on TV.
It tasts like Nyquil mixed with everclear......
I'm a big fan of black liquorish so you know I'm smiling....
A votre sante!

Quite right Anne, Marilyn Manson launched his own brand of absinthe last year, it is available everywhere, including Australia. As are other brands.

Ah, just another way to poison your body, dull your mind, suppress your consciousness and drain your soul being given offical sanction by the government.
....yet the natural mother nature grown awareness enhancing supplements remain illegal.

Some minds need a little dulling to focus correctly...
Might I list the names of the super-artists that drank this stuff regularly with great result?

I've been intrigued by absinthe for quite some time. So many movies--pretty much any movie dealing with the turn of the 19th Century into the 20th--has featured absinthe, and of course due to its illegality in the US for almost a hundred years, it developed quite a mystique.
So I was definitely interested when I heard it was going to be legal again. I was admittedly a little put off when I found out that it was going to taste like black licorice, not one of my favorite tastes, and that it was going to be pretty expensive. However, curiosity got the better of me, and I bought myself a bottle of the "Lucid" brand absinthe back in December. From what I've read, of the four varieties now available in the US, it's the only "true" absinthe, made with grand wormwood.
It's quite...interesting. I was very excited to try that first glass. After the first glass, I thought, OK, now I know what it's like, my curiosity is satisfied, I'll probably never drink any more of it (which would have worked out to a $50 drink--a mighty expensive cocktail!). However, a week or two later, I thought, let's give that another try. Flash forward to now, and I have to admit I've developed a taste for it. I've drunk slightly more than half the bottle. I don't necessarily drink it that often--maybe a glass on a Sunday afternoon when I'm relaxing with a book.
The taste, insofar as I can tell/remember, is more or less like any other anise-flavored liquor I've ever had, like ouzo or Galliano. However, it's been 25 years since I drank ouzo (a one-time event, due to the earth-shattering--and facial-capillary-rupturing--vomiting it induced in me the following morning), so I can't claim to remember exactly what it tasted like, other than generically like licorice.
I have yet to try absinthe with the sugar cube. The day I bought the bottle, I stopped by the supermarket to buy sugar cubes, but they were out, believe it or not. I could have simply put a spoonful of sugar into it, but that somewhat defeats the purpose of the ritual (for that matter, I don't even have an absinthe spoon). I haven't really felt the need to try it with sugar though--I find it rather sweet on its own.
As far as hallucinations, that's not true. Those were rumors created by the wine industry a hundred years ago, when it felt itself threatened by the popularity of absinthe. Plus, the only element in the drink that could conceivably cause hallucinations, thujone, is now controlled by government regulation and is not allowed to exceed a certain level. The same compound is found in sage, so it's probably accurate to say I've ingested more thujone due to overindulging in stuffing on Thanksgiving than by drinking absinthe.

Ladies and gentlemen,
Last night I broke loose and had about 4 absinthes.
I'm suprised and excited to report that the mythical place that is the legend shrouding this special drink is in fact a real place. What I was experiancing while being rather tipsy on absinth was not like bing tipsy on bourbonVodkaRumTiquela......It did something very strange to my eyes....The way they focused.....The way my mind focused....
I'm sold. Thank goodness it's now legal.

It was like,,,,
All the good ideas that I ever had but couldn't remember were like fish in a dark pond....As you know,,it's hard to get those fish on the hook when you really need them. And they don't usually stop wiggling long enough to get a good grip on them...
Well, I'd liken Absinthe to a stick of explosive....In goes the absithe into the pond...BOOM! Up come all your ideas....quite still, easy to get a hold of...
Unlike real fish in a pond....The fish in my head were not killed by the experiance.

This is very interesting, Dom....a really vivid picture.
I've burned dried artemisia (wormwood, from which absinthe is crafted), and I've inhaled the fumes. That had a different effect on me than what you've described; breathing in the smoke was more like an opium experience.

This is my second bottle of American absinthe....I can't remember the name of the first bottle...(it was small and square).....
The Absinthe I was demo~ing out last night was the most expensive. "Lucid" is the name....The one with the pair of eye's on the bottle...
It's a little green fairy!!!
I'm convinced it's the wormwood Tasia.....

You know, Dom, when I met you, I immediately perceived you as the kind of person who enjoys "what if?" and loves to "see what happens", but who is both responsible and judicious in his approach to these generally sequential philosophies. As a result, I think I'd be concerned about a bottle of absinthe in anyone's hands but yours.

There's a band called Absinthe Blind (http://www.myspace.com/absintheblind). My son was in high school with some of the band members.

Cool name. IIRC, it was poor-grade alcohol used to make absinthe that caused blindness, and not the artemisia itself...

Even mine?!
The only thing I know about absinthe was the story Motorhead's drummer told once about how the band was on tour somewhere in Europe. He said they got to the hotel in whichever city it was, and they went into the bar. He said they had Absinthe, "the real stuff" (I guess there's some stuff marketed as Absinthe, which isn't "the real stuff", I dunno). Lemmy says "Oh, don't even start with that!", but the drummer figures "Well, one shot can't hurt". Well, about two hours later, he had drunk half the bottle.
Apparently, the night ended with him stumbling into the wrong hotel room somehow, awakening another guest, and then running through the hotel corridors naked. I think he said at one point he got on an elevator, not realizing it was one of those glass ones, so everyone in the lobby saw his naked ass or whatever.

Nope, felt dandy.....The bass of absithe is high grade vodka...So, that means its been distilled 3-4 times...Making it a pure spirit...
