The middle solo part of Gates sounds like video game music, anyone else think so?

why's that?
Any song could be used as video game music. Try playing Grand Theft Auto, then put an audio CD in your CD-ROM drive. Get in a car and then you can choose a radio station of your own, which is actually your audio CD.

Now, you have me curious!
I just remember the first time I heard Gates. I was wondering what chemical they'd ingested. :lmao:
They did a great job of it on Symphonic Live.
Think I'll pull out that DVD and give it a listen !

I see what you're saying. It's cool though.

Well, I don't play computer games, but I'm guessing (hoping?) that you're suggesting this in a positive stance? As I said in an earlier thread, welcome to the land of YES - hope you have a great time here with your new friends!

I can get what you mean (the battle sequence) but Yes tunes are just a bit too good for video games.
Wakey's various solo synthesizer experiments I could see used in a game, not real Yesmusic though.

I think Yes tunes are just a bit too good NOT to be in video games. And actually, they have done it.

You play too much, my friend, believe me ;)
If only Wakey could do the music of one of my favourite games...Pokémon... :lmao:
Hi Nina, up late again, are you? :winknudge
I have never played the above game, but it was created in conjunction with "The Ladder". I believe Jon had some input.

Oh yes...I've drunken too much black tea with one of my friends...it was a funny night and now I can't sleep...and so I'm looking for the latest threads here in my bed with my laptop under my blanket...but playing the new Pokémon game would be also very cool now...

Sorry for bringing this thread out of the grave but I found it kind of interesting, because in fact a good number of game music composers HAVE been influenced by progressive music. Especially the stuff used back when video game music was limited and simple on consoles like the NES etc... I suspect I found "genuine" prog music easy to get into because I was used to their elements in music all these years. I could find you a series of videos on this Japanese video site introducing progressive rock to video game fans...
As for our favourite caped composer: ever heard of "Microcosm"? :)
And I can probably find you a horde of people who will jump at a tune like "Catherine of Aragon" (EDIT: more like Anne of Cleves actually - that was the exact track I saw the responses in question to) and wonder if it was a variation on some Final Fantasy tune. Did you know famed soundtrack composer Nobuo Uematsu is a self-admitted progressive rock fan?
It's not that Gates of Delirium's middle section sounds like video game music - it's just the other way around. ;) I would go crazy if any game or film managed to use this fantastic song in a good way - although the song is like a movie in itself, really. How many songs can make you SEE things (without the mushrooms, that is) entirely through music and music alone?
And now that I've just come to said middle section, I'm done rambling because I can't concentrate otherwise

I'd never hoped I'd find someone else who knows Nobuo Uematsu on this site! I'm a big fan of his music (as well as the Final Fantasy series and other Japanese RPG games).
Yeah, he's a fan of Yes, Deep Purple, Genesis, ELP and of classical music, too, and all that is very audible in his wonderful music. BTW have you heard of his band called The Black Mages (with Nobuo on keyboards)? They play very interesting prog-rock renditions of classic Final Fantasy tunes. Lots of stellar musicianship guaranteed!

a couple bands have taken classic video game sdtks and interpreted them with the typical rock line-up of gtrs, bass, drums, keys. One band is called the Mini Bosses. worth checking out. they did some great stuff to the Castlevania themes as well as Metroid and Zelda.

No, I haven't actually - to be honest I only know Uematsu's music superficially because you do hear them so often on the internet, particularly around Japanese places. And when I first started listening to prog rock a few months ago and realised how game music sounds so similar, a little cursory search threw up Uematsu's musical preferences. That's all.
I didn't get as far as the band bit - always been somewhat of a musical hermit, but thank you very very much for the recommendation. I'm adding it to this growing pile of "stuff I should've heard all these years instead of rotting around listening to nothing"... I do like the FF tracks I've heard so I should go ballistic over quality band versions of them :)
On the topic of Japanese ACG media and progressive rock/70s music I can think of:
(1) the anime i -wish you were here- (Well (http://www.animenfo.com/image/anime_732.jpg). Apparently the soundtrack doesn't disappoint in homages either.)
(2) Cromartie High School, the soundtrack is done by genuine Japanese prog group Bikyouran, which sounds exactly like Mr. William Bruford's favourite band*
(3) Keith Emerson himself doing the soundtrack to Harmagedon/Genma Taisen and... g...Godzilla...
*They also change entire lineups a dazzling amount of times, just like a certain red royalty (right down to the founding guitarist staying constant) The dude probably sits on a chair, too. Curiously enough the anime director did the bass for the incarnation that did the soundtrack.
I haven't yet found any obviously-Yes inspired stuff, though. I'll automatically worship anyone who does something Relayer-inspired in popular media.
Okay I'll shut up now, this is ridiculously off-topic.
