I've got a 20-year-old nephew who's a multi-instrumentalist/vocalist with his own band. He's an open-minded kid who likes and owns Fragile and The Yes Album. He also enjoyed seeing Yes in '04 and Asia this year. I obviously would like to cultivate his interest in Yes by introducing him to more of their music. What album should I share with him next? I'm a little hesitant, as Yes got very "experimental" after Fragile. What's he ready for? What's the next step? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Close To The Edge, the best of the best.

You know, Pete...
Since he's got The Yes Album and Fragile, likes them, and liked seeing Yes in '04, you might as well continue chronologically and get him Close To the Edge.

thanks! good points, guys... it's the next album chronologically, and has the same lineup as Fragile... maybe not such a huge leap... but I am still open for more ideas!

If you wanna blow his mind, you could try Relayer...

I'm concerned about going there... at least right now... I know the electric guitar solos on Sound Chaser would blow his mind, though... he thinks Steve is incredible...

I'd just go chronologically after Fragile . . . it's the order WE discovered them, after all . . . back in the day . . . ;)

I'll just back up what everyone else has suggested Pete. CTTE seems logical, and if not maybe throw Yessongs at him and then he can decide if he enjoys CTTE after hearing it performed live. The bonus being he gets to hear his favorite songs live (at the bands peak) and gets a nice cross section of CTTE.

Get "Close to the Edge", like I did. Then Topographic Oceans, then "Relayer" (Z0MG BEST YES ALBUM EVER!!1!1!), Going, etc. etc.

exactly! as I was young when most of the albums came out, I got them much later... started with Fragile, then Tormato, then TYA, then Yessongs... jumped around all over the place... but I like Diane's thinking! there is a progression to this progressive music of Yes, and I should probably just follow it with my nephew...

I started with Talk, so I could recommend that, though I'm sure that if he likes TYA and Fragile, you can play him CTTE or something like that without any harm...:)
Or what about a live album? I'm sure he'd like KTA. It's got songs from the albums he knows as well as later ones, and all from the 70s.
LOL, I wasn't too young back then, I was yet to be born! That happened in 1989...

And now for a completely different point of view
Give him something more current like Magnification
or :meteo2:
give him Talk
It's a great album

I'll third that motion. If he's already got and loves
TYA
Fragile
the next logical step is
CttE
followed by
YesSongs
He's sure to be wowed by Howe's guitar work on both. After that it's only logical to show him where it can go from there, with
TfTO
and
Relayer
After that you could surprise him with Yesterdays, GftO, Tormato, and Drama.
After that you could really confuse him with Yes by getting him Time and a Word, Beyond and Before: BBC Sessions 1969-1970, 90125 and YesShows all at the same time.
Regardless of what you, me, or anyone else may think about these albums, it would be interesting, if nothing else, to let him make his own conclusions about the music. Let it speak for itself.

I gave him The Yes Album after the Rhino remasters came out and I had too many copies of my own! He already had Fragile from his dad, but I never got any reaction to TYA until recently, when he said he'd been listening to it "a lot" since the Asia show last summer. He thinks Steve is the stuff, and loved hearing Roundabout from those guys. I look forward to continuing his education.
Obviously, I know all the Yes albums. This was a judgment call question. I think you've all answered it well. Thanks!

Talk is one of my favorites.
To continue, yes, I'd carry on chronologically, if possible. After 90125, just continue on with BG, ABWH, Union, Talk and KTA 1 & 2.
Don't forget the compilations and box sets! Then borrow them!

Tales and Magnification would be my recommendations.

Would have to go with the Magnification lobby here
A bit more feedback from our younger members would be incredibly helpfull here to try and guage their progression, either that or show him a bunch of covers and see what 1 takes his fancy and go from there

hailhail - thank you very much indeed... I am think I am going to go with CTTE next, and hope to take him further and further into the catalog after... CTTE will probably be under his Christmas tree on Dec. 25!

I'm always all for chronological. It's how I've acquired/re-acquired my Yes!

Six Wives of Henry VIII. Sounds alot like fragile...but allows his musical ears to simmer/marinate for a little while before dropping CTTE into the frying pan.

Pick up all of them. Play each one a million times at eleven and then get back to me. :dnce:
