What is your favorite part of And You And I?
This is one of my favorite Yes songs ever, so it was really hard for me to pick one part of it.

There are so many good parts to this song, great moments.
The whole thing is one, large, good part!
However...
Studio version:
Tough! Love Steve's opening harmonics. So pensive. Composed. So non - indicative of what is to come. Introspective.
Love The Preacher, The Teacher. Love that Steve acoustic again. Have come to love the bridge on into Apocalypse, with Wakeman's moog solo. It may be the many subsequent live versions that have helped me along with that.
Apocalypse is great, but much better live, and much more so in recent years, the last decade, even especially the 21st Century versions.
The piano falling from the cliff leading on into the coda is fantastic, as is the modest little coda itself, so essential to the song.
In the end, both live and studio versions, it has to be Apocalypse for it's ... orgasmic quality. The proper fruition of the song.
Noone evolved a song like Yes. Both compositionally, and over the years as a band. Noone.
Apologies for past tensing.

probably Eclipse... my favorite part is when you hear the guy say, "There is no dark side of the moon, really. As a matter of fact it's all dark."

I voted for Eclipse. Eclipse has always been my favourite part on the studio album. But live I would have voted for Apocalypse, in recent years when they play AYAI Apocalypse has been immense even better than Eclipse which is some going.

You might want to hold on to your chair really tightly, because you're not going to believe this coming from me.

You ready?
Here goes:
My favorite part of AYAI is the bass line during "Coins and crosses..."

"Ting!"
Is that cousin to the famous Pink Floyd "Ping" during Echoes? :D
My favorite part is Preacher/Teacher. I love howe it starts acoustically, then Jon sings solo, and finally the bassline just before "I listened hard but could not see" kicks in... Wow every time! And the lyrics have always been the easiest for me to remember of any section of AYAI.

Yes.
Yes!
Particularly the note when he octaves UP! But, that is one mindblowing bassline...
My fav. part of And You And I is right at the very beginning, when presumably Eddie says, "We're running now" and presumably Steve says, "Okay" [it might be 'hokay', LOL]...and then right on through to the last note flying off up into the sky, and beyond...
...And You And I is one of those Yessongs...
...less intense Yesfans really know very little to nothing about...
...and the WHOLE WORLD needs to hear...
Now!
And forever.
Amen.

lolwut? What's "Coins and crosses?" Is that from the lyrics? (I don't know them, my vinyl copy came with a Thin Lizzy inner sleeve........was it supposed to come with lyrics? *sigh*)
My favorite part is either The Preacher the Teacher or Apocalypse...I think it's TPtT.

The Eclipse
I don't like the original version of And You And I, I like the Trevor Rabin (YesYears) version.
Trevor Rabin's guitar solo (Especially 3:56 - 4:44 into the song. )

I did vote for Eclipse, nevermind the earlier Floyd references. ;)
That melody is amazing. And I have always loved how they play it live, from Yessongs to 2004.

It's after the second verse:
Coins and crosses never know their fruitless work
Cords are broken, locked inside the mother earth
They won't hide hold, they won't tell you
Watching the world, watching all of the world,
Watching us go by....
There's also a charming little running verse that lies underneath this:
Turn round tailor
Assaulting all the mornings of the interest shown
Presenting one another to the cord
All left dying
Rediscovered of the door that turned round
To close the cover, all the interest shown,
To turn one another,
To the sign
At the time
Float your climb...

I'm not sure where any given part begins or ends. But my favorite bits are Steve's 12 string acoustic parts, particularly the intro (one of the Steve Howe bits I can actually play).

It's all great and it's all beautiful. One of the few songs that lifts my spirt and takes me on a magical/joyfilled emotional journey. A complex written song that starts simple and ends simple. Much more than a song; measures of music and lyrics that I never tire of. This is a large part of the greatness that we all call "Yes" music/magic. I know most of you yesfans know exactly what I mean and I can't for the life of me understand why there aren't many more people who love what we embrace/enjoy. Am I getting a little carried away? I don't think so.:gig:

Well said Anne. Yes, that's like asking which part of the Mona Lisa you like best.
"You and I" is a unit, a single composition.
It's like asking which part of Beethoven's 9th Symphony you like best. It's not about any particular 2 minutes, it's about the whole thing.

It's a great song the whole way through, but if I had to pick my favorite moments they'd be Steve's opening harmonics and the Eclipse theme. Lovely!

I love all of it but I chose Chord of Life because it "get's me in the mood" for the rest of the song.

I have exactly ten minutes and nine seconds worth of favorite parts from this song...
The opening notes stand witness to what awaits
The middle section is simply euphoric
The ending brings all things timeless full circle

Every note and composition are a memory, and a trip to my past. And now I have to teach the legacy.-
